JG is a coach speak artist.

He says all the right things, his message, the process, looks the part, smart, etc but when it comes to actual coaching he's lousy.

The old Belichek wasn't good in Cleveland deal is a joke as well. BB was a SB winning DC witht Parcells and is the best coach arguably in history.
And you knew of his greatness when he was losing in Cleveland didn't you?

I would much rather have Zimmer on the sidelines than Red. He got a bum rap here being made to switch to a 3-4 under Tuna. I was never part of the GROZ movement.
He got a bum rap, but he's one of the few coaches retained by Parcells because he thought he was very good coach even though he didn't have the experience with the 3-4. So if he succeeds in Minnesota, it is only surprising from the perspective of him being Dallas coach because the Parcells' coaching tree has been fruitful. In other words, good coaches know other good coaches.

We had [Jon] Kitna and he had a great run, got us into the playoffs, then Tony came back. We just didn't have that mentality last year. We've got to improve on that."

Stephen is as insane as his old man and this is what we have to look forward to. I like these guys though.....I bet they start drinking in the AM.....my kind of guys.

Zimmerman is a good coach but Garett is better.

You don't feel that the Cowboys are deserving right back up there with the likes of New England?

If one believes that he can become over the same period of time that also applied to Tom Landry, the why not expect the best as well?
Tom Landry had Tex Schramm as his GM and Murchison as a silent owner..

Tom Landry took Mike Ditka and Dan Reeves and made them premier coaches in the NFL.

What coaches is Garrett going to do that with?

What he has is former failures as HCs as his coordinators in Marinelli and Linehan.

No comparision with all due respect.

Jimmy Johnson, Norv Turner, Butch Davis and Zimmer are not HOF coaches on the Jones side.

Jones was responsible for letting Sean Payton get away and he was the key to the future of the Franchise. He was brought to Dallas by Parcells to be his successor..but Payton took off.
Huge mistake..again Jones failed to act out of lack of vision.

I was really hopeful that there would be more from the post Landry era but Garrett will never add to it either.

When you look at the failure of the Franchise under Jones ..the lack of any additional legacy for the NFL looms big for Jones..BIG!!

Jones has made his reputation on making money..not winning football games.

When you look at the history and legend of this team..it was not just winning for 20 straught seasons that made them famous.

It was what they represented to the sport in the way of adding to the league with coaches, standards and consistency.

That doesn't exist anymore because Jones is so constantly involved and has undone what we once were.

Garrett is busy trying to re-establish the Jimster Era but he hasn't a clue.

Here's to the staff surprising all of us...but the group is a solid group. The entire group has pride, and experience. Jerry has a passion for winning...I'll still trust in the power of strong leadership that evaluates and adjusts at each turn of events. They put together a good team for play evaluations. I doubt that the scheme/player developments have been put on hold as well.

As to winning under Jerry Jones, the number of 10+ win seasons is at 11. That puts Dallas in the top 1/4 of the NFL.

Having been photographed laughing it up with Art Briles, Stephen had to make the obligatory "vote of confidence" statement. Means nothing. A bad season and Garrett is gone. Briles said he expects to have a coaching job by November or December. By then, Garret's fate may be decided.
How we doing, Cooter?

As far as head coaching, I think Jason is actually pretty good. I have 0 doubt he's the hardest worker in the building. The dude is a robot, I don't know if he's even programmed not to try and achieve perfection.

But when assembled, I don't know if he was coded with the 'edge' that the year by year successful coaches have. Belichek is a robot too but you know he has it, the Harbaughs have it, Arians has it, Carroll, Rivera too. Tomlin as well, although I think he's a poorer version.

It's an intricate balance, and it's no doubt that the combination is why it's so hard to succeed in this parity driven league now.

It also doesn't help that the FO has squandered prime picks for much of his tenure, mainly 2nd round picks, but the Claiborne pick is another example. 0 doubt in my mind if the FO had been better, Jason would have had more success. You still need talent.

Stephen Jones: Jason Garrett's turning into a great coach; 'he's the hardest worker in the building'
http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...s-turning-great-coach-hardest-worker-building

Before Bill Belichick led the New England Patriots to four Super Bowl victories, he spent five seasons as head coach in Cleveland. The Browns were a combined 36-44 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs during that time.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones recently referenced the early part of Belichick's career while answering a question about Jason Garrett.

In five and a half seasons as the Cowboys head coach, Garrett has compiled a 45-43 regular season record and a 1-1 postseason mark.

"First of all, I think Jason is one of the up and coming coaches in this league. We're fortunate to have him," Jones said Friday morning on CBS Sports Radio's Tiki and Tierney Show. "I think obviously Jason went through some growing pains. If you look at some of the great coaches in this league, I mean, Belichick's first stop was not necessarily what we think of when you think of Bill Belichick.

"[Garrett] has all the skillsets, it's just a matter of getting seasoned and I think he's at that point. ... I do think he's turning into a great football coach. I just think he's come so far. I think it's all in front of him and he's only going to get better."...

I don't think Garrett is a good coach, but I also know he is stuck in the difficult situation of working under Jerry Jones. He is supposed to be this offensive genius, but he doesn't even call the plays. On top of that our offense is about as bland as it can get. Thank God for Tony Romo

Great CC. West Texas got a good cooling rain. Cowboys game this evening. Life is good. Was in San Antonio yesterday and it was HOT. 104 or so. The reason training camp is not there anymore I suppose.

Garrett is in a terrific situation. He inherited a team with a franchise QB and despite only one winning/playoff season in his 5 full years as the head coach he still has a job. Look around the league and see if you can find another head coach who's team has only made the playoffs once in 5 years and still has a job with the same team. Garrett would've been lucky to last 3 seasons with another team going 8-8 each of those years and missing the playoffs.

I do think Garrett has:

  • outstanding organizational skills
  • good motivational skills
  • an almost unsurpassed desire to grow and learn
  • a tireless work ethic
  • a strong core working knowledge of the game itself..I mean he is a football lifer since he was a barely able to walk.
  • outstanding core principals and values

I just wonder if the guy is creative or innovative enough or can stop outside the box enough to rise above the norm.

That's your view...fair enough.

I kind of think that more is involved when this offense becomes top five again...
