You can follow a Poster by clicking on a Poster and....er....clicking follow.

You have to open each thread and in the upper right of the thread, it either says "Watch Thread" or "Unwatch Thread" I didn't see a way to mass-unwatch them, so had to open every single one I was watching to unwatch individually.

There are the options "Watched threads" and "Watched forums" . Those are probably where your emails are coming from. Uncheck them.
