I guess it depends on if the Red Witch from Game Of Thrones can bring back Al Davis from the dead. If this don't happen then he has no trade value at this time. If he comes back and shows out then some team might give up some picks..

Firstly, I certainly agree that we're not (and shouldn't) trade Tony before the end of this season. But, at that point, I think it becomes a real, valid conversation. Dak will deserve a chance to compete for the starting job and Romo will deserve not to be in a competition. It's a tricky situation.

I thought about that as a breaking point, too. I decided I want the two good QBs and as much time as possible to address the defensive talent while we've got them. If I thought we could flip Tony for a quality pick or defender and still somehow have a good backup QB during that same window, I'd consider turning the team over to Dak next season. As it is, I think I prefer having the two good QBs for this year and next and seeing how we perform.

Dak should expect to be the backup this year. Next year is pushing it, but after that, it needs to be his team. I don't want to be looking at extending him for a major deal based off of too few actual games. But QBs are too valuable in this league and there's very little to suggest the right hit wouldn't snap Dak's collarbone the same way it snapped Tony's. I'm not ready to be hoping Kellen Moore really is better than we all hoped again if we don't have to be in that boat.

His playing and the next injury determines the move. It's not unreasonable to think that Romo might retire if injured again.

One reason this keeps coming up is because Romo isn't going to want to be a backup
that is the rub.....Dak has shown he can be the Franchise QB......you can't keep 2 starting QBs

If Tony re-does his contract and takes 8m a year to be the back-up we could live with it but that is maxing out

If Tony wants to start and doesn't want to give a discount then they have to look into trading him

ps- I completely disagree on his value.......he gets 18-20m on the open market and nets at least a first
Teams have 40-50m in cap space and losing teams can sell Romo to their fan bases

This city and fan base doesn't have the patience to wait for 2018 to hand over the reigns

It will come to a head sooner rather than later.....unless we somehow win the SB this year with Tony

You won't get anything for Romo at the end of next season, he'll be 38 years old and no telling where his health and game will be by then. It won't be easy getting anything for him now with all the games he's missed due to injury the past 2 seasons. The Vikes coughed up what they did for Bradford because he's only 28 years old and stayed healthy for the most part last season. He played terrific down the stretch for Philly so the arrow was pointing up for him. With Romo's age and coming off broken bones for a second straight season the arrows is pointing down with him.

What difference does it make if a player is 36 or 26 if he's only under contract for 2 seasons? Unless you think Tony's about to fall off a cliff in terms of his ability.

Bradford had multiple shoulder/AC joint issues coming out. He popped his ACL twice in the pros, and has missed multiple games in 5 different NFL seasons, including more shoulder problems and a significant concussion. He's pretty much in the same boat Tony is in, only he's not as good and he happens to be a lot younger.

That said, admittedly, the MIN situation this year was pretty extreme. They had to overpay heading into opening week and in need of a starter for a legit contender.

Romo isn't going to redo his contract to be the backup. I'll guarantee you his trade value won't be anymore than what I've posted due to his age and all the games he's missed due to injuries the past 2 seasons. No one is going to give up a first round pick along with other picks for a 37 year old QB who's body is breaking down and can't stay on the field. I'll be surprised if Romo plays 2 more years after this season.

God help us if Tony comes back and does not play as well as he normally does. Because you're right. If he does come back and play at a high level, though, the fans will settle down again after 3-4 wins and be back to supporting Tony (most of them). It really is the best outcome, because Dak benefits from time with Tony, especially after getting all the production early.

Next year, it's tough, because at that point Dak really is capable of playing and really well be sufficiently up to speed. If he sits in year two, it's out of respect for a great player in front of him and by virtue of the fact that we can afford it because he was a middle round pick. After next year, though, I don't think there's any good argument for not starting a 3rd year player who's shown what Dak's shown already.

I've had 3 different responses to this typed up and deleted them all. Who the hell knows? The more I think about, the less confident I am in projecting the outcome. All I can say is that is a very unique situation and your guess is as good as mine. I can't think of a single situation quite like this in the past. The closest is the Favre/Rodgers situation, but Rodgers didn't have 6+ NFL games under his belt.

At this point, I'm not sure what his value would be, but if a team actually wanted to make a trade, I'd do it for anything remotely reasonable.

There's really no way for you to guarantee anything re: his trade value, so why try? Who saw the Colts spitting out a first rounder for Trent Richardson, for crying out loud? You never know what teams are going to do.

If we do trade Tony, the closes analogy I can think of is probably when the 49ers traded Montana to the Chiefs. He was about Tony's age at that point, and I don't remember the exact deal but it was more than one player/pick and combined for a first rounder, I think, when it was said and done. Throw in some conditions to escalate/deascalate the value and they'd probably find somebody willing to take a reasonable chance. He's a hell of a player at the most important position in football.

Heh. I just typed below (above, I guess) that Montana/Young was the best analogy I could think of, and it was a long time ago. Fairly similar, though, in terms of relative ability and the situation the 49ers were in. Though Young at that point had several more years in the league under his belt.

Age makes a lot of difference because no team will be hesitant to extend a 26 year old QB who can play. They certainly aren't going to extend a 36 year old QB who's missed the number of games Romo has the past 2 seasons due to an assortment of injuries. Bradford had a lot of injuries but like I said he's only 28 years old and didn't suffer any significant injuries last season. He played great the final few games down the stretch for Philly, go check his numbers.

Minn was desperate after losing Bridgewater just prior to the start of the regular season and because they have a contending team that has a legit shot at the SB they went for broke to trade for Bradford. So far it's paid off. Bradford is far from in the same boat as Romo who's 36 years old and is coming off his third different back injury since 2013. The shoulder injury Bradford had last season that had him out 2 games, had no affect on his play down the stretch. He played his best football last season during the final month.

2 seasons of Romo is worth a first to a dozen franchises

You claimed a first and multiple picks. Name the dozen franchises you're talking about? We haven't gotten 2 seasons out of Romo the past 2 years. The last full season he played was in 2012.

I already did and I stand by it..............and that is before injuries

When I get time I'll search the thread and find those teams and break it down to see if they would give up a #1 for Romo.

That's alright. Someone here told me that Sam Bradford would not start for 10 teams either and yet Minnesota gave up a 1st and a 4th for him!

And he has been worth every penny.....quality QBs are worth their weight in gold......which is even better for Tony........j/k
