Validation that the Packers hold on every play

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published a very interesting article today that goes into great detail, and essentially validates, that most of us haven't dreaming it up when it looks like the Packers OL is holding on every play.

According to McGinn's sources on other teams, the Packers have evidently come up with a new blocking technique thzt skirts so close to the line of holding / not holding that they aren't getting called for it.

Other teams have noticed it to the extent that they plan to emulate the Packers next next season.

Remember, this his a home town, 'Pro Packer' news organization publishing this. Kinda letting the secret out of the bag.

I would have published it in the 'NFL' Forum, however, the 'Packers holding' topic is interwoven in many of the threads we've had here on CZ in the past week and I thought it was relevant to the Cowboy in that way.

Summary: Yes, the Packers OL holds on just about every play -- especially their excellent LT (Bakhtiari) -- who is already an excellent pass blocker, never mind the fact that, according to the article, has absolutely perfected this new technique.

This is standard practice for some teams. But only some teams will get away with it. Patriot CBs are taught to interfere, just be sure to turn around at the last second. Most officials will let it go even though the CB had no intent on "playing the ball."

I'm not watching the game, but someone on here needs to report how the league handles it against the darling Pitt franchise. I think that chess match between the Emperor and the league is the most compelling entertainment of the weekend. Antonio Brown WILL get interfered with on plays which they've let go all year. It's gonna be a real quandry for them, but after hearing the KC lost on a holding call on the final play says maybe the league doesn't care about hypocrisy at all.

My read of the technique is that ALL of the Packers OL is taught to hold for brief moment at the onset of every pass play.

While it's just a brief moment, that obviously the very same moment where most pass rushes are set up to pass or fail -- they begin to penetrate or they don't.

I agree, but I guarantee if our linemen start employing that technique the league is gonna have to order more yellow flags.
 
Does anyone remember the 1995 NFC Championship game where they allowed Erik Williams to put his hands in Reggie White's face all day? I'm talking about inside his face mask. They also allowed to pick play from Novacek that set up a long Deion play and they also called back a few touchdowns for Green Bay. One was an interception. I think we just got paid back.
 
This new technique must have started after their 6th loss when they were 4-6 because Rodgers has had a ton of time to find open receivers since then.
 
This allows inferior lineman to become serviceable. The packers Oline has one first rd pick and the rest are 4th rounders or later.

It's a great technique. But some just call it "tackling".

Or there's also the choke hold technique. Very effective.

I mean, when you can get away with choke holds with the ref 2 yards away staring at you, why not?

Green Bay didn't have any touchdowns or interceptions called back in that game. You must not be remembering correctly.

Yup. If you can thwart that initial burst you got a guy standing on his heels with little leverage or momentum.

And it happens so fast it's not easy to see.

I think the key is that the Packers are doing this very quickly in real-time. The choke hold from behind on the last Rogers pass happens very quickly in real-time. It's very obvious from the stills, but I think the Packers have perfected the technique for quickly holding and letting go. The goofball thing is that the Cowboys get called for hold on similar plays.
 
With the way the Packers hold and the way the refs let them get away with it, I'm surprised they don't win the Super Bowl every year.

I dunno. Seems pretty obvious in real time too. In this clip, you can see exactly what the article is talking about. Each tackle slaps the outside shoulder pad. But here it results in a chokehold. I don't think that the outside slap somehow makes it not holding. It's still holding.

I find it vaguely amusing that the one hold in this game was called on us. I will freely admit it was a hold, but it was much less egregious then many of the ones that went unflagged in GB's favor.
