Cure All: Jerry Jones talks potential role for Jaylon Smith

...Jerry recently spoke to ESPN Radio in Dallas about expectations for Smith as spring nears. Here’s what he had to say:

We have, in Jaylon Smith, a real improvement to our defense. He can play now if he starts now and has the kind of spring that you’d expect him to have,” Jones said on ESPN Dallas 103.3 radio. “He can play, in my view, where he is. But I do expect him to improve with his nerve and even be more comfortable, but in my mind, he’s capable of playing right now.” He would continue to hint more at Jaylon’s role by saying: he’s not necessarily your designated pass rusher, but I don’t know that he can’t be an outstanding pass rusher,” Jones said. “He’s outstanding every place else. Now this guy is – healthy – a No. 1 pick.”

There’s no doubt if healthy Smith will play. If or when he does he’ll play all over Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 defense likely as a middle linebacker, weak side or strong side linebacker or a pass rusher off the edge.

Wait, he won't play defensive back? Who wrote this?

I am no doctor - or even an orderly - but it seems as if we are all looking for instant coffee. Most recoveries from injuries aren’t like that. Seems to be on the right track. Let us hope that is the case.

I think you have the right perspective. There's an awful lot of time between now and the next game that actually counts.

I know what you mean. Still stings for me too. What could have been.

But I'm trying to focus on a future that still looks bright.

Oh yeah. Had anyone said before this season we would have found a QB1 of the future that alone would have been very good news. Have the feeling the future is indeed bright. Glasses aren't rose colored, but there surely is promise.

Uh, it's been over a year since the injury. It'll be over a year and a half come next season.
