Is Jeff Heath starting material?

some players are just good in limited roles. Will it hurt to give heath a chance, not if we have another guy ready to go. Until than, dont break whats not broken.

They currently don't have anyone else so they might be forced to give him a shot. I'm all for giving him a chance because I think he's earned it with his play in limited snaps, but if someone better falls to us (like Peppers) then we should definitely take him. Heath would still get a lot of snaps regardless, like Wilcox did last year.

Did I ever say he was a stud safety? Did I ever say he should be penciled in as the starter?

No, I didn't.

I was simply correcting your misstated facts.

Now go back to the RantZone Roy.

Ah, so you were picking on a side fact cuz you couldnt refute the main point? A main point you seem to agree with. Got it!!

This is probably the reality of it. Personally, Heath's always gotten a bad rap around here, but he's hardly alone in that category. He's a good ST player, and he turns in plays in limited opportunities on defense. You want to give guys like that a chance to show they can cut it, and you want insurance because they often can't.

As a guy holding a job down going into the draft, I'm ok with Heath. If he takes the next step, that's great. People probably don't remember Barry Church had a similar career arc, and Heath's a better athlete that Church ever was. But if he can't cut it, you need insurance back there that you have somebody that probably can. Frazier is a ST player as far as I'm concerned, trying to earn some snaps in the defensive rotation. We're going to want another player with his pedigree or better to round out he position group. I'd be happy with a S at any point in the draft. If the guy they like is there, pull the trigger.

im ok with this, IF they dont put themselves in that position but its how it plays out. There is a fine line i understand that.

if the draft ends and FA ends and they still dont, than yes, im with you. If they purposely pass up because they are banking heath is better and to save money, than i lose it.

Yet for some reason the ball falls into his hands more than anyone else on the defense.

sadly, this is both good and bad.

but again, lets not ignore the fact, he might be good in limited time. that doesnt mean the tranisiton is going to be successful.

NO!!

He has been on this team for 6 years and never was good enough so start with marginal talent in front of him. What has changed but the marginal talent in front of him? Or the hopes and wishes of certain fans?
Actually its 8 years....I had biology class with him in the 10th grade. He would practice with the cowboys during study hall.....

Let's not forget Barry Church was a UDFA coming out of college and played his way into starting role.

Who knows...Maybe Heath can do that as well.

Its time for Heath....after the time put in.....if he can't cut it, he never will. I believe in him right now.

Has more instincts than Byron Jones, Set him at FS--fits him better regardless. Had one pick vrs. G.Bay, should've had 2. Byron Jones gives us more value at CB right now regardless--need a top flight CB on board already ready in our scheme.

Would've he let Rogers have a pass angle to Cook on the sidelines to set up the game winning FG?.....I'll take the odds on nope.
That's what I think, I think Jones playing against TE's his first 2 seasons would love the idea of sticking big WRs or just smaller WRs in general. IMHO, I think Jones has the idea size to be a big physical shutdown CB.

Jones and Brown start at CB, Scandrick and Carroll battle for #3 and 4.

Ok, butty, so what is it 5? 4?

The number of years is not the point. The fact that he was never good enough to start is the point. He is a special teams ace, that is why he is on the team. Turn a blind eye all you want. Its not going to magically make Heath the stud safety that he never has been up to this point. And its not like he has been playing behind great talent. The guy ONLY gets on the field when our other 3 safeties are hurt.
We need a SS, unless we bring in TJ McDonald, Health will be starting. Boy I hope we sign McDonald and Poe.

Like dude said, he deserves a shot based on his limited play.

The guy has some quickness and strength. 6'1" 210lbs.... 4.40 in the 40 yard dash....10' broad jump and 22 reps on the bench press and a 37" vertical. I had no idea he was that athletic. He has 2 forced fumbles and 4 picks in what little play he's seen. He's also a devastating hitter. He's 25 years old so he's still a young guy. I think anyone would admit that even with his limited playing time he makes plays. Are the Cowboys considering starting him? I think he would do fine, or at least give him a chance and see what happens.

He deserves, matey, as much chance to start as any of our present mutts on the D.

Haha where you been man? A couple us have brought it up a ton when talking about him over the years.

Yeah, he's crazy athletic. He's also probably one of the toughest guys on the team. Who was the guy who got between Hardy when he threw a tantrum? Jeff Heath. If you see a dust up on ST it's usually him involved in it

He does seem to be in good position a bit for turnovers when he plays snaps. He had a pick on Rodgers in the playoffs, and he picked another one that was called back on that ticky tack hold that would have won the game. 2 picks on Rodgers in the playoffs warrants an argument for starting, imo.

All that and he hits hard as hell and does so with class.

Heath has to go out and show it but I will say I have seen big improvement in his play. Consistency is the key

Yes, as a FS. Problem is we have a FS in Byron.

We don't know if he's starting SS material. The tackling concerns me at the SS spot. He basically started against the Packers and our tackling as a whole was awful.

He is a very good athlete. He ran a 4.40 forty, benched 22 reps of 225 pounds and posted a 37" vertical. The problem is he's small in the upper body, particularly in the shoulders and traps, so making a form tackle in open space against a 225 pound tailback or a 250 pound TE may be an issue for him.

We'll have to see and in general I would not have a problem with him starting back there for a few games at this time. But, if we can find a dynamic SS like Peppers I think we would be fools not to take him in fear of already having Heath on the roster.
