Because of his affirmation that Jerry is the kind of guy to pay an assistant coach more than a head coach, it's not a leap of logic then to say he might also be the kind of guy to pay a scouting director more than what others pay for a GM.

Remains to be seen... He'll never have the GM tag while in Dallas. The money might be the same-- but he could definitely have more power and recognition in other places.

If you're happy where you are and you're making the right amount of money for what you do then why would you leave for a GM title?

McClay has been pretty good so far compared to whats out there.

I think we may have finally started to clean up our 2nd round head scratchers too.

The fact that McClay has turned down other jobs that could lend him more recognition tells you that Jerry is compensating him very well, even if he doesn't have the title of GM with the Cowboys.

As long as the money is good, and you don't care about your title or ultimately having final say, if you think about it, Will McClay has a pretty good gig.

If things go well, the fan base will give him props. If they don't, they automatically blame Jerry Jones.

It's a pretty good existence.

I disagree...I personally think that there is a "gentleman's agreement" between Will and Stephen that Will is going to be the GM once Jerry checks out.

In his interview McClay expounded upon how he's 100% content with the team and that he wants to win a SB title there. He said his family is very happy in Dallas also and that his son wants him to stay with the Cowboys. He strongly emphasized that those things mean a great deal to him.

I think that is pretty much understood by everyone. Lets face it- the way Jerry drinks and carries on, the odds of him making it a lot longer is not good.

i'll say this, if this past draft turns out to be as excellent as 2016, it's going to be hard to not give him the GM title AND the monetary compensation

I can see an apocalyptic meltdown from cowboys nation if Jerry runs him out of town over not relinquishing that title

Obviously we know he was well paid. We did not really need Wade Phillips to affirm that.

The fact Jerry Jones did something backwards with the head coach making less than a subordinate does not mean it relates.

Nothing outside of Cincinnati relates to what we have where the scouting head is basically a GM level figure without a title and no final say. Think CEO of Talent Acquisition without the final say.

McClay to Jones is much like Duke Tobin to Brown.

if he starts getting to much credit for team wins and success the gm and owner will encourage him to move on to another team

I don't see any reason there's any change to anticipate there. Stephen will become Jerry. As someone else commented, the only thing missing from Will's job description is the final decision, which is a negative if he's power-hungry, but which is a positive if he appreciates job security and the fact that someone else will always be facing the wrath of any bad decisions.

Not too worried about it. I don't think McClay is either.

As long as he is well paid and his family is secure, I don't think he craves the GM title and honestly, the accountability one on another team would have.

There are not too many GM jobs around the league that are that attractive. There are a lot of unstable owners with bad organizations and job security is at a premium with the job function.

He has a pretty stable and insulated job right now. He blows a draft, he is not getting fired as that is not how the structure works. He is a director of the process, not a decision maker.

To defend my point just a little... obviously, indeed... we did know that... we just didn't know if Jerry might go as far as paying the man a GM type salary. And now we pretty much do. It certainly relates. It says Jerry considers these things on their own merits, and doesn't have a salary scale chart that he's operating from.

I am a diehard Cowboys fan. But I want McClay to have the title that is universally recognized by the NFL...for the job he is doing. And if Dallas will not do that...then he needs to leave. It's BIGGER than my fandom! The fact that Jerry has gotten away with doing this for years....makes me concerned that his son will try to do the same thing. I love the direction of this team TODAY. But lets not forget how rudderless and clueless this was for YEARS....and in spite of the good vibes we are feeling....we still have not gotten passed the divisional round of the playoffs in over 20 years. My hope is the Dak does not get caught up in all that comes with being the Cowboys QB...and focuses on finishing the deal.

Not sure what to say here except what the heck are you talking about? lol.
Jerry gave McClay a job in football and has promoted him to ever increasing roles and salaries.
McClay is universally lauded for draft hits while Jerry gets blame for any mistakes.
Job titles actually mean fairly little UNLESS you are looking to leave.
Your salary and day to day duties matter. McClay is obviously not being treated in any fashion that makes him desire to leave and yet his name will remain the hottest one on the market.
There are few people on the planet with a better job than Will McClay.
Suggesting he must leave is about as goofy as it gets.
