Garrett not a good coach?

Your lack of an answer says it all. You are programmed to just assume that everything about the Cowboys is great.
I have never understood that quality in people. You would think reality would slap them upside the head every once in a while(to clarify, I mean actual REALITY and not Reality the forum admin:muttley:). I used to think like that too and then I grew up. Now I just call it like I see it. I would give up the NFL if I couldn't follow the Cowboys but I have no problem admitting when they make mistakes. Some people just never grew out of that "they can do no wrong" stage I guess.

I'd bet Amber could rattle off a list of things he thinks the team has done wrong in recent years. I think most positive fans easily could. There's a big difference between belaboring the pessimistic takes and thinking the team can do no wrong.

And remember: we're 14 pages into a thread about whether or not our reigning NFL CoTY, who just took a team to 13 wins again is actually a 'good' coach or not. At times, fans bend over backward to defend absurdly negative takes about the Cowboys. They really do.

He just called Garrett a "great" coach. Not even you would call him that.

I would if I thought he were a great coach. He hasn't proven to be a great coach yet.

But this thread is about 'good coach.' Which is why I made the point about fans bending over backwards absurdly for no good reason.

Here's how I would do it:

Great Coaches - Belicheck, Carroll, Payton, Tomlin, Harbaugh, McCarthy (all SB winning coaches)

Good Coaches - Reid, Rivera, Fox and Arians and I guess now Quinn who has a NFC title under his belt

Lewis and Garrett would fall behind those two groups right now. Lewis has an abysmal playoff record despite having very talented teams at times. I might even put Garrett ahead of Lewis at this point.

We have had this argument too many times my friend. I hope this is the year Garrett wins me over. Time will tell and the excuses are growing thin. Time for Garrett to put up or shut up.

Well one thing I can say is @Trouty is an equal opportunity post liker. He is liking post on both sides of the argument.
I do this regularly when posters such as yourselves bring compelling arguments to both sides of the debate, I respect everyone's opinions when they're thought out and articulated well. Lots of great points from both sides in this debate, CML :)

He's been putting up for years. Some homers just think the teams were better than they actually were. But that wasn't my point in replying to your post. I know we're not going to agree on Jason Garrett.

I replied because I see people saying other fans think the team 'can do no wrong' an awful lot. When it's almost never the case. I know it gets said about me by 'negative' posters all the time. No matter how critical I am of how we've gone about addressing the limitations on defense, or spending high picks, or taking chances on players who are injured or substance abuse risks, or how often I don't like a key coaching hire, or some of Jerry's crazy habits or whatever, I still get people trying to paint me with the 'you'll back the team no matter what' argument. The reality is, most of us who recognize the team really has been making good decisions here lately--and improving overall, as a result--all have things we don't like that we see the team doing. We just recognize the trend has, overall, been positive. There's really not as much to ***** about with a 13-3 roster as we find to ***** about around here.

Similarly, back to the thread topic. When a guy takes your team to 12 and 13 win seasons, any reasonable person is going to look at what he's been doing and agree he's doing some things right. The NFL is just too competitive for anybody over the age of 12 to think you can win a championship when your head coach is a liability and not an asset. That said, the beat goes on in threads like this one. Or in the other one going on on the front page where people can't comprehend a grown adult got an offseason DUI for whatever reason. All you can really do is keep trying to provide context when the accusations crop back up.

Any context you are anyone else make is all based on your(or their) point of view. I and other fans see things differently. I do agree wholeheartedly with the statement you made that I put in bold. I have seen nothing that makes me think we sniff a championship with Garrett at the helm. Time will tell and as I said before the excuses are running thin. Back to point of view: A very good case can be made that the less Garrett we have the better we do. I will not argue that though because it is a point of view and nothing else. One thing I will say is opinions are like arseholes in that we all have one and they all stink. Neither one of our opinions means anything when you get down to it and time will tell who is right(I truly hope you are). I do not even expect a championship just a game where we are beat without major coaching blunders in the playoffs this year. That said, we are both Cowboy fans which is the tie that binds. I am no less of a fan than you or Amber even though I may point out the warts more aggressively based on my point of view. I am sure we will keep having this argument until Garrett is fired or proves me wrong. I truly hope he proves me wrong this year. Although I doubt he does change my mind nothing will change my opinion of his OJT and the mistakes he made getting there if he does win me over. As always we have to agree to disagree my friend.

What championship did Garrett win?

This was probably directed at me. I was referencing an earlier post that suggested if we won a hypothetical championship, it'd have been because of the coordinators and Will McClay. Merely an example of how far people will bend over to defend a position, even in the case of a hypothetical.

Garrett hasn't won any championships as a head coach, yet. Just a couple of NFCE titles and a bunch of runner ups while we were rebuilding a pretty mediocre team. Which is why the discussion here is 14 pages on whether or not he's a good coach, instead of a great one.

I'm really not interested in anybody being proven wrong on this topic. As far as I'm concerned, that horse left the building already, and I know better than to think everybody will acknowledge it. It'll be like it was with Tony, where the hardest core dissenters will eventually just be quiet on the subject once enough evidence accumulates. As far as I'm concerned, the guy has built a team capable of contending and he's shown that on the field. The only question now is can he build one that can actually compete for Superbowls. As you suggest, we'll see.

For the record, I've been told by people who should know that my opinion on this topic is 'very fresh.' A steady diet of common sense and a little bit of careful opinion-maintenance goes a long way.

Absolutely. Its never black and white. Both sides of these views make very valid points.

Idgit IS Jason Garrett. Look at those eyes and the red wool hair.
