Why are we overrating Kellen Moore's intelligence?

I really don't think so at this point. Moore is done, on the the field, in Dallas.

A few names for you: Brad Johnson, Brooks Bollinger, Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassell. These guys can be really stubborn about the back-up QB.

I don't see how anyone can argue against any of the aforementioned. Koy and Ty Detmer were similar in statue but you can tell they had a higher football IQ than Kellen. Kellen stares down check downs and out of all of the videos and pictures of Kellen, I never saw him with his mouth closed. I don't want a mouth breather playing QB for my favorite team.
Many very high IQ people have a deliberate (slow) thought process because they think about many different scenarios at once. Quick reacting QBs have to be conditioned not to think about much post snap.

You're confusing IQ or coach type football intelligence with on field quick decision making.

Einstein would not have done much if he had 3 seconds before a 300 pound DL hit him.

His physical limitations make the playbook limited. He can only throw so many passes.

Fans, including myself, tend to fall in love with big arms. But what big arms really do is that they open the playbook up as there are now more throws the QB can make and more plays that can be ran. I also think it helps a little with anticipating throws because if you have a Jeff George type arm, you can be a split second off in your anticipation and still deliver the ball to the receiver.

So with Moore, you have a limited amount of plays he can run based on his lack of arm strength and now he has to anticipate better because if he's off by a millisecond, the ball isn't getting there. And I don't think lack of anticipation has to do with 'smarts' at the QB position either. Many QB's can read a defense with the best of them and know the playbook as well as anybody, but they lack that ability to anticipate throws and they end up out of the league in a hurry.

I'm all for Cooper Rush at the #2 QB anyway. We are screwed if Dak gets hurt and we have Moore or Rush play. Better to take the QB that has legitimate upside and think that a young QB like Dak who is pretty impressive from a physical standpoint, does not get injured.

My sentiments as well. I think the Cowboys believe they are contenders and conventional wisdom says they 'must' have a veteran QB2 as insurance if Dak gets hurt. That's good thinking, having a Kosar or Garrett on your team can salvage your season in those situations,,, but I don't think Moore is at that level. Maybe I'm wrong, Linnehan sure thinks highly of him, but all things being equal I take the young guy with upside.

Take football coaches. Bill Parcells was never a QB and never had the physical skillset to be a QB. Nor was he ever a QB coach or O-Coordinator. But for my money he was the best developer of QB's that ever lived

You think Parcells was better than Bill Walsh or Paul Brown as a QB developing coach? Or even Joe Gibbs? To me, Parcells was always a defensive oriented coach. Are you talking about Hostetler and Romo?

It's the forehead. Most people with big foreheads, seem to be intelligent. Peyton Manning comes to mind, as I'm making this statement.

I think the real question is

Are we overrating the QB2 position?

I don't see Dak as nearly as fragile as Romo was his last few seasons and that has trained this fan base to worry unnecessarily in this new Dak lead era

Then he should be a coach and not taking up a valuable roster spot.

Now you're moving the goalposts. You're saying a player with a low football IQ shouldn't be playing QB, but a coach with a low football IQ is acceptable?

Back when Murray was still here. I was telling my youngest about my big head running back theory. I surmised that most great running backs had big heads. I cited Murray, Smith, and Simpson as evidence. I then said, Jay, who is my son, you could be a running back. Without missing a beat my then 6 year old ask me, "Dad did you play running back?" I still get a chuckle out that.

It is plain to see that it has so far.

No doubt.

The difference I see is from other areas. From people like Garrett and the Joneses.

Specifically with regard to Garrett, I thought he looked pissed watching Moore fumble around and struggle against the Colts, visibly upset with what he was seeing.

And the next thing you know, Rush is getting second team reps during the next practice. I see Garrett's hand there, not any decision Linehan is making. Maybe that's me, maybe it's just my perception?

But I also don't think Linehan is stubborn enough or dumb enough to hitch his career and future to Kellen Moore, no matter how highly he thinks of him.

What I don't know is if the team would have the guts to outright release Moore or keep him around at the expense of having a better, capable player on the opening day 53?

I agree. Garrett was pissed, it was written all over his face. I was yelling, "about damn time!" I know Garrett is killing Linehan behind closed doors. I wish I was a fly on the wall during their Kellen debates.

We might end up getting lucky again because Cooper has played beyond his draft/undrafted status, saving us from any potential Kellen appearance.

I'm having the uncomfortable conversation with Kellen Moore.

"We value your intelligence and what you bring to the team and want you to remain with the organization. But as a coach, not as a player. You can transition from player to coach and would be on hand in case injuries strike. But any thoughts of remaining a player at the NFL level are over. You can accept that or we wish you the best elsewhere."

Not really.

In 2015 Dallas brought in Moore to be the #3 guy late in the pre-season. When Romo got hurt Dallas went out and got Matt Cassell and as soon as Cassell was up to speed they elevated him over Moore. If the Linehan love was truly there then why didn't they just go with Moore?

In 2016 Moore got injured so early in the pre-season that no one got to see what Dallas was planning to do or what they might have done. It is all speculation that Dallas would have made Moore the starter following another Romo injury.
