He was a bad contract. That was the intent of my post.
To be plain, I wish Jerry would find a way to rid ourselves of contracts like Dez and Crawford. And it would be even better if we could get compensation at the same time.

Crawford and Dez have no trade value. JPP plays a position of need.

So they keep a $28 million dead cap this year? Wow.

No, they're taking a $15M dead cap hit this year on the last 3 years of his prorated signing bonus. Saves them $2.5M against the cap this year and $19.5M and $17.5M the next 2 years.

Yeah I don't see why they don't do it. You have two top 4 picks....why wouldn't you take Barkley first and then get your qb next?
Bingo. I been saying this from day 1,and I think the Browns agree. They REALLY want Mayfield...so then, just take Barkley at 1...then draft Mayfield at 4. He will be there. Its a win win. Two instant pro ready starters.

Speaking of competent GM's. Are we willing to pay a G 14 million a season? Would it be prudent to trade Martin to a team with cap space and get draft picks in return. Then we could draft a decent G along with the rest of our needs with the additional picks. I know Martin is a stud but can we afford his salary and still improve this team? Near max salaries at 3 positions on the O line, Max salary for Tank, Dez contract at its current rate, and oh, Dak and then Zeke will want to be paid here in the next few years. We have got to get out of this "restructuring" contracts and kicking money and space down the road. This "signing your own" free agents is not always the best practice, sometimes you have to let these over priced free agents walk for the sake of your salary cap.I like our strategy of not getting too involved with the first wave of FA. Reserve some cap space so you can sign some of these tier 2 "1 year prove it" deals or cap friendly deals for guys that are talented but have been cut from their teams for cap space. Beware of the Zack Attack.

Gettlemans history is drafting highly on dline etc. That's why he was hired here. He wont pass on Chubb, especially after depleting the dline with the JPP trade.
That was my thinking. They have a history of drafting DL in the first round

Allen is really raw but has the tools, Darnold is fascinating but his throwing motion is weird...not sure I want him if I'm picking in the top 5..Rosen meh...I dunno...But Mayfield is a fire cracker and oozes talent and swag...a great teammate. I want him if I'm the Browns, period.

They might as well. They aren't spending money on anyone else. Might as well use to to bring back Martin.

  • It looks like there will be $15 million in Dead Money toward the Giants Cap.
  • All they are on the hook for is the remaining Pro-rated money from his Bonus, $20 Million. They already took a $5 million hit last year so there is $15 million left.
  • The rest of the Guaranteed money is given on a year to year basis of which Tampa assumes from here on out.
  • He had a cap hit of $17.5 million this season ($5 million Pro-rated bonus + $11.25 Million Salary + $1 Million Roster Bonus + $250,000 workout Bonus = $17.5 Million). So by taking the cap hit of $15 million - $17.5 million Salary, that is a savings of $2.5 million on their cap

Agreed on the draft position element. That's why part of me wanted to get Bosa or Ramsey when we had #4. Not that I'm complaining about Zeke, though.

A different GM (Jerry Reese) signed JPP to that bad contract, though. Their new GM (Gettleman) traded him away. So it seems they're trying to clean up some of previous admin's mistakes. Then again, it's the Giants - they MAY (hopefully) find a way to still screw it up

Fair enough on the GM, but realistically, there's not much difference in them. Everyone has to pay the going rate if they want to play the free agent game. That's why a player like Sammy Watkins gets $48 million and why KC will probably be looking to get out from under that contract in a couple of years.

Frankly, this is why Dallas has chosen a different free agent strategy, but ultimately, they still have to pay for keeping their own while simply not improving in areas that could make them more than an also-ran. There's a hard balance to strike and the Cowboys front office doesn't know how to do it.

Chubb to the Giants?
Chubb should go to Cleveland #1.
All this talk of Barkley #1 is crazy!! Cleveland is not one offensive playmaker away from being good. Take Chubb at 1, and let one of the QB's fall to you at 4.
Giants are probably clearing cap space for the crazy contract they have to give OBJ.
