Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

Far be it from me to yell conspiracy, but as much as I love what Witten did for us his whole career, if it is true he needs a few more days to decide to retire or not, this was a good/bad situation he put us in. Regardless if we knew he was debating such for weeks before, a decision would be helpful for the team, while knowing if we gave Dak the line and/or weapons to win, matters to Witten. Let's say Conner and Gallup were picks to keep Witten another year. Is that too far off? Maybe giving the wall another monster and another weapon at WR is enough to keep Witten going for this year and possibly a SB. I mean a SB is his dream before retirement...

Honestly I think Conner was the BPA and fills a need. Gallup was a good WR pick but I think we could have done just as good with St. Brown and/or Cain in the 4th. The fact a very good DT and Safety was there for the taking, speaks volumes when we took a WR that is good but just a smidgen better than the 2 we may or may not get in the 4th.

Not complaining either way, I just think JJ is asking for one more year and is tipping the draft hand to keep him...... I can only hope Settle falls to our 4th round pick......

Wow what a Hall of Fame type move Jason, Way to go. The best thing thus far! ..now what about all those posters who claimed we should have kept him on the team for his quote unquote "leadership" lol...yeah cuz this is what leaders do;'-)...good move witt got somebody kicked off the team that could contribute but stayed on to not contribute. Hall of Fame move old man witt

Kind of ironic if Witten was the dude that got Dez kicked off the team and then he up and quits in the middle of the draft.

What a load of clueless drivel.

The front office was completely blindsided by this.

Thanks for screwing us Jason.

I love Witten, but if these reports are true that the team didn't know........and Stephen Jones saying "that's news to us" kinda make it sounds like they are true...........

That is a total dick move right there by Witten..........I'm sorry, but nothing else to call it. You do not want until the middle of the freaking draft and drop a deuce like this on the team.

What goes around comes around I guess.

Dam, that is a straight up dick move..............Witten decides in the middle of the dam draft, "hey guys, I'm out...Later"

I love Witten and I thank him for his years of service to the team, but dam, that is just straight up cold blooded.:(

Maybe Clarence Hill is right, this is karma for screwing over Dez by releasing him late.

That’s not as wrong as the team holding onto Dez long enough that he misses out on Free Agency and now is looking for a 1year deal.

We kind of deserved it.

How Leader of this leader ha?! Yeah right because that's what leaders do;'-)

"Clueless drivel" lol... seriously erod& why must you say this why?!? Because it differs from ur perspective..come on e- rod is that what u do is insult people who share different views from you. For some reason I don't think you think it's clueless sure u said it was but deep down when u sit back & think about it it's not clueless...& I think that's what's troubling you the sincerity, the brutal honesty of what I speak & how I speak & how foreign that is to you& the artificial Cowboys fans I'm hipp champ trust!

This is just so out of character for Witten, why would he blindside the team like this?

There has to be more to the story than this, I just cant believe that a guy like Witten would do a dick move like this.

Maybe ESPN did leak it, I don't know..............I'm just so bummed right now, Witten & Romo were my favorite players.

Wah, wah, wah!!!!!! Don't worry, you still have Garrett.

A player can project statistical goals based on where they stand at the moment and a reasonable statistical expectation for a coming year or two. A player can’t do that with championships, and he cant just play forever waiting on it. And the opportunity to walk into a premier tv job without paying any dues as a broadcaster at all won’t always be there.

A championship is really the primary thing to play for. There is no guarantee of one, but you can't say someone who hasn't won one doesn't really have anything to play for.

Now stats? That is something not really worth playing for unless it's some major record.

Of course it is, and maybe I should have stated what I did a little differently, but the point was he wasn’t likely to notably improve on his accomplishments by playing another year, and he had a unique opportunity, so the change makes sense.

Well, he's doing what's best for his career and family.

If true, it's good opportunity post playing days, to land a gig like that.

While he has made some money, I won't knock a man who sees a career move that could set him up big time for a long time.
The dude has talked about retirement for a bit. Sure after the restructure, the team thought he would play this year. Something big came up for him. It sucks to be blindsided, but I won't knock a man looking out for himself and his family. Especially when teams blindside guys on the fly at any time via a cut.

I dont care if witten did just tell them today though I am pretty certain he did not.

Witten has been running the workouts so he has been there everyday and there was no reason to think he would retire but they knew he was considering it and debating on his options.

I think Jason Witten should do what is best for him. He does not work in the front office here and is not part of roster building so if he decides to retire he owes them nothing.

Apparently, Witten wasn't their first choice. So even though he interviewed, they were screen testing other analysts ahead of Witten. Brett Favre apparently flunked his screen test, and Witten shined in his. So out with Favre, and in with Witten. Who knows if they tested other analyst candidates also? So, even though everyone knew Witten was interviewing for the position, the reality of being offered the position is recent - within the last week.

According to Jerry, he's had multiple conversations with Witten about this possibility throughout the process, and Witten still has not made up his mind. So, it is wrong to characterize Witten's earlier response to saying he wanted to play in 2018 as a lie. What may have been a long-shot in Witten's mind suddenly became a real opportunity, and the new reality of the situation is causing him to reevaluate his commitment and options. Nothing unusual about that.

For example, I am very happy in my current job, and am not in the market for something new. If some new opportunity suddenly materialized, it doesn't mean I think any less of the people and organization I work for now. It just means there is a new opportunity that changes the landscape for decision making. There are a lot of people I know in that have experienced similar situations. Heck, if my last employer hadn't pressured me into taking a promotion I didn't want, and only agreed to in a moment of weakness after a full year of pressure, I'd probably still be working for him and living in Colorado.

As for Witten, he's seen how quickly and unceremoniously both Romo's and Bryant's Cowboy careers ended. You've got to believe that has some influence on his decision making. I honestly believe the Jones family and the Cowboys still think very highly of both Romo and Bryant as people. But the football decisions were made. Witten's smart enough to know it could happen to him, too.
