That deal almost hit. Here’s why it didn’t:
Seattle insisted on second round pick
Cowboys insisted on third round pick

So the two teams will continue to posture and negotiate. None of the dynamics have changed...only the temperature in the room.

It only happens if the Seahawks back off their demands, and even then it may be dependent on what kind of contract extension Thomas would agree to. The Cowboys aren't going to open the checkbook up now - if they were willing they already would have.

Okay, who’s on meth right now and who’s the insomniacs? :D

Earl for a third and fifth all day, but I want Tank locked up, first. I don’t think we can fit both under the cap. Maybe @Nightman could shed some light?
Tank is playing on the tag this year no way around it now, the window on signing him long term has been closed this season. Now that Gregory has returned, depending on how well he and Taco play this year, D_Law could very well be in his last year as a Cowboy! And NO, I am not pulling for ET, I have been against trading away top picks for an aging player all along, I could live with a 3rd. We could squeeze ET under the cap this season, The question is, how much $$$ does he want and how long and are we willing to pay it!

Huh? Cowboys were perfectly willing to deal and to open their wallet. For a third. That much is established.

What we don’t know is if the Boys were planning to give Earl a long term extension.

There's nothing to force Seattle either, they're not giving him away, there's no market for Thomas other than Dallas.....if he walks after this year, they get a high compensatory pick...Dallas would be asinine to trade away a second round pick and pay a safety 13 million a year....This team need a dominant defensive linemen more than a overpriced safety

Of course Seattle is forced to make a decision. The decision may be to stay the course and just accept that Thomas will walk next year, and they will have no ability to prevent it, but that's still a decision they are forced to make. The Rams don't have to make that decision because they will have the right to match an offer made by another team

What you are talking about is that there is a limit to what they are willing to do, which is what I am saying. What I meant was they aren't going to open up to whatever it would take to make the deal happen. Every team is willing to open up and deal as long as it's on their terms.

Weird how 30 other teams aren't showing any interest either? The asking price and contract demands put him out of reach.

No matter who gives Earl a deal....it will be a long term contract...some of which will never get paid.

For example:
6 years, $70 mil

But whatever team signs him will only view it as a three or four year deal...the last part of the contract won’t be guaranteed...and Thomas will get released when he is 33 or so.

The key is how much guaranteed money is involved and if the Boys want to assume the risk.

This is all true, but again, I think if the Cowboys were willing to give both Seattle and Thomas what they want they probably would have already done it. Accordingly, it seems unlikely to happen now unless Seattle and/or Thomas come off their expectations

T-RO-If Earl goes to the Raiders, you are going to embarrass yourself by making this ridiculous thread

Life is a game of risk-reward. But I like to play.

Raiders only have $2 mil in cap. I suspect they could move things around to make it happen, but they aren’t in as good a situation as we are to make a deal.

A lot of teams are happy w/their safeties...or are up against cap. And the age/price is scary for every team.

He makes 5 ridiculous threads a day.

U Mad I don’t hit u w/likes as I generously do w/others?

If they don’t interest you...don’t play. My threads certainly seem to interest the major players here.

Going to take more than a 3rd to get him. I wish they would but that's the same as they'll get if they let him walk.

Partially true.
Seattle gets a higher selection in the 3rd round pick if they trade..and with more certainty -comp picks aren’t assured.

And let’s not overlook that that they also recoup almost $9 mil in cap space...and they clean up a situation that is starting to sour.

Unfortunately I'm a minor player here..

That being said I am quite interested in ET. I watched him play HS ball in SETexas, followed him at UT, and really believe he wants to be a Cowboy. And something tells me he will be. I follow the thread daily. Come on Earl.

Don't care who thinks these Earl threads are tiresome. Find something that interests you.

People get so wound up over predictions, particularly those that go wrong.
Last time I checked, no one invented the crystal ball and no one has a machine that can peer into the future.
Sure would be nice with that mega lottery still waiting to be claimed. ;)

I have no machine...no AI at my side...and I am fallible. Just calling it as I see it. I’ve given my critics a chance to skewer me later on.

Makes it a juicy declaration.

And, so you know, I think I figured out the disconnect. What the NFL is referring to when it says an unrestricted free agent can sign with another club without a draft pick being owed to the prior club is that the team that signed the player doesn't have to give up a draft pick. The compensatory system is a different animal that creates draft picks out of thin air to compensate a team rather than the team receiving an draft pick that would normally exist within a 7 round draft. Apparently there is actually the equivalent of 8 rounds in the draft rather than 7 because of the created picks.

So, my mistake, although the language put out by the NFL was misleading. Don't expect an apology though because I didn't harm you in any way, even though you reacted as if I had. It was merely a disconnect, not worthy of the reaction you had to it.

And spare me the victim nonsense. You are the one who reacted so dramatically and as if my writing something differently than you believed were some kind of personal affront.

The unfortunate thing is I have found in the past that you and I typically have similar views, and we have both supported comments made by the other, so I find it odd that you reacted to me the way you did. Even if I was mistaken, so what?
Interesting.

Dallas wasn't forced to make a decision on Dez, he was under contract, they just cut him....Seattle is NOT forced to make any decision, Thomas is under contract for another year, he can whine and complain all he wants about being traded which is nothing but a scheme to get a new long term contract, when the season starts Thomas will be playing for Seattle under his final year of his contract...if he walks after the year, Seattle gets a high compensatory pick,....if I'm spending high drafts picks on a player in a trade to help this defense, I'll go with Donald over a safety....
