That's the problem with being 6'8" and expected to also block. Defenders have an easier time getting underneath you.
He's 6'6".

I have been preaching this over and over. This staff has no idea how to use Rico and they expect him to be the mold they want and if he isn't, he will go to waste like the others. This staff wants Jason Witten clones. When we should be moving on from those types. Every player is not going to be able to do the same things. Just because he can't block, does not mean you should keep him from showcasing his skills as a receiver.
You're exactly right, JG does want Witt clones. That's why no TE has worked here after all the failed 2nd round picks. Marty B might have been quirky but the dude was above average. Meanwhile in Philly they had 4 TE's that could barely block but that didn't matter because of the matchup problems they all posed.
I have to find it, but rico caught a pass and got somersaulted and still kept his balance. Think he had another nice catch as well across the middle. That was it. Then the 2nd preseason he balled. Then they stashed him on IR with the bogus concussion, because they knew he wouldn't last on the practice squad or go thru waivers. Now we are at these crossroads, which is hilarious, because he has shown more catching ability than all the other TE's combined, but because he raps people don't want to give him a chance.Where were Rico's highlights in his first preseason? After all, Jarwin has only had one full preseason. In the one game he played this preseason he looked very good running his routes, catching the passes smoothly and turning up field. Besides, if your idea of a good player is an occasional difficult catch that ends up on a highlight reel, you are missing the bulk of what makes a good football player and team. Getting open, having good hands, being fundamentally sound, and fitting into an overall team effort are what matters. The occasional highlight catch is the gravy, and my bet is given the opportunity Jarwin appears to be getting now we will see an occasional one of those from him too.
I'm not saying this to knock Rico - the catch in this thread was very nice, and I think there is some natural talent. It just needs to be refined. But the way to promote Rico is not to try and knock down the others.

Wheres video of his blocking like a water buffalo on roller skates? I never saw him in a preseason game miss a block that caused a negative play, or got a QB killed. This is all we keep hearing with no video evidence. All I see the guy do is make plays. Can someone find me these videos? Btw I don't care how garrett thinks a guy looks in practice. So don't bring any of his quotes to this response.Cole Beasley raps, too.
Gathers problem is the playbook looks like Chinese to him and he blocks like a water buffalo on roller skates.
YepHe's 6'6".
Nothing wrong at all for wanting to go to a Superbowl. However that doesn't mean that he has NEVER did anything positive for the Cowboys.Nothing wrong with wanting to go Superbowl right? If you agree than we have a lot in common.
I don't care if he blocks and is lumbering........split the dude out on a straight go pattern,
or post in the middle of the field and have some fun!!!!
He's a match up problem, that's the whole point.
Source for "the knock on him is poor route tree"?the knock onhim is poor route tree etc but I agree just let him run fly routes and do what he does best but only a handful of times agame, hes a lability when in..no one hasn't said the guy cant catch we saw it last preseason before his injury its the rest that keeps him on the bench but really how often has he really been available , dudes hurt too much..if hes doesnt break through this year with an open comp, it over for him..
Surely Garret didn't look at Gavin Escobar and think "Witten clone". lol
Witten could run AND block in his prime. He's a born leader and a true iron man. We can't replace him b/c he was unique.
I think its time for the "witten sucks" crowd to move on. They can rehash the debate before his HOF induction weekend.
I love Witt. My argument isn't about him. It's about JG and his inability to develop offensive talent. Dak and Zeke were not developed. Who else has he developed on offense? A QB? WR's? TE's? The answer is no one. Meanwhile Marinelli is on the other side making crap into serviceable players at least.
This is a telling quote from him when asked about his one-handed catch:
”Nah, because there is more to this game than making plays like that,” Gathers said. “There’s an every-day aspect of it. Coming in, critiquing the blocking, and just being an every-day guy. You can make that catch one day than, shoot, and you don’t make no more catches for two weeks later like that. Coach doesn’t like flash players.”
Now, that could be just lip service and when it doesn't really put in the time and effort to do all the things that are required, but if it is what he truly thinks, there's hope he'll make the roster, either as the 4th TE or forcing them to cut Swaim or Schultz (Jarwin is probably a lock because they kept him from being poached last year).

right you downplayed his contributions as do a lot of Cowboysf fansBut I never said he NEVER did anything positive for the Cowboys. He has.
However, he could do much, much more. With great power comes great responsibility.
Finally got to see this as the first video never worked for me
poor route tree.... blah blah blah. Seriously, Rico showed last pre season before the concussion what he could do. Bottom line is Rico could give us a serious downfield threat from the TE position, something we have =nt had in a very long time. He would be a red zone mismatch all day as well.the knock onhim is poor route tree etc but I agree just let him run fly routes and do what he does best but only a handful of times agame, hes a lability when in..no one hasn't said the guy cant catch we saw it last preseason before his injury its the rest that keeps him on the bench but really how often has he really been available , dudes hurt too much..if hes doesnt break through this year with an open comp, it over for him..
