That's the problem with being 6'8" and expected to also block. Defenders have an easier time getting underneath you.

I have never been that impressed with most one handed catches. Some are great. Most are extremely overrated. To me, the two handed difficult catch is way more impressive because it shows that a receiver can be fundamentally sound in all situations and more likely to catch almost everything.

When Junior Odell Beckham made that famous one handed stab against us in 2014, suddenly every 12 year old playing receiver tries to one hand catch passes that are supposed to be made with two. The one hand grab should be an extreme rarity rather than a go to.

Nothing against Rico in this instance. It’s a nice catch. Is it great? Not really.
I get what you're saying but the way obj or Rico reached for these two catches cannot be done with two hands.

I would even gripe a little that he didn't complete the catch properly. He should have secured it first, then looked to score.

Where are the Blake Jarwin highlights? I haven't even heard him making a good catch. Swaim and Schultz are nothing more than blockers. They both are not pass catching TEs. Especially Schultz.

Gathers causes the other team to account for him. He is a matchup nightmare. None of our TEs can scare anyone.

Where were Rico's highlights in his first preseason? After all, Jarwin has only had one full preseason. In the one game he played this preseason he looked very good running his routes, catching the passes smoothly and turning up field. Besides, if your idea of a good player is an occasional difficult catch that ends up on a highlight reel, you are missing the bulk of what makes a good football player and team. Getting open, having good hands, being fundamentally sound, and fitting into an overall team effort are what matters. The occasional highlight catch is the gravy, and my bet is given the opportunity Jarwin appears to be getting now we will see an occasional one of those from him too.

I'm not saying this to knock Rico - the catch in this thread was very nice, and I think there is some natural talent. It just needs to be refined. But the way to promote Rico is not to try and knock down the others.

I think its silly that Garrett doesn't give Gathers a chance. Who cares if he can't block as well as the others. The other 3 TEs are nothing more than blocking TEs that can't catch. Our coach needs to think out of the box and just start playing Gathers more with the idea of using them as passcatchers rather than extra blockers. We already have 3 other TEs that can block and its not like they are anything special.

I have been preaching this over and over. This staff has no idea how to use Rico and they expect him to be the mold they want and if he isn't, he will go to waste like the others. This staff wants Jason Witten clones. When we should be moving on from those types. Every player is not going to be able to do the same things. Just because he can't block, does not mean you should keep him from showcasing his skills as a receiver.

Its called being a coach.....Garrett would be doing Rico, Ricos teammates and the fans a a disservice and he did not demand excellence.

Really? No one demands excellence from Garrett. This is hardly about demanding excellence. Its about them trying to mold Rico into something he isn't which is a blocking TE. This was a college basketball player with tons of raw, athletic ability. Why would you try to make him into something he isn't? Who cares if his blocking skills are subpar. Line him up out wide and create mismatches. But that would actually take coaching skills and developing schemes, something this staff has no idea how to do.

They aren't trying to mold him into a blocking TE, they are trying to mold him into a well rounded TE. There are a limited number of roster spots and it's difficult to keep one trick specialists who can't step into the starter's role in case of injury. That's not to say they can't or won't decide to do that with Gathers, but it isn't a given. There will be other players on the bubble the team would like to keep as well, so it comes down to making decisions.

That said, don't give up on Gathers being able to block. He started with about 9-10 years less of football than everyone else on the team, and he still has room to learn and get better. He did a good job blocking on a couple of goal line running plays in the game Thursday.

With the gloves they use today, every receiver can do this routinely. The gloves are like fly paper.

They need to outlaw these gloves so these become special catches again.

Like what others?

As for wanting Jason Witten clones, if that's the case why are so many of the film clips we see of Gathers with him running intermediate to deep routes? It doesn't at all seem to me they are using him to find the holes in defenses the way Witten did for so many years. At the end of the day, they are just saying he can't be a pass receiver only, and has to be able to handle the blocking responsibilities as well.

Those are good highlights. But all film highlights must have context. Like what was the competition at the time. The highlights against Houston were in the 4th qtr mostly against guys who aren’t on NFL rosters. Most of us as fans overvalue highlights like college game highlights or preseason game highlights.

The quality of competition always provides appropriate context.

That play was awesome. I had to think to myself .. do I think swaim or Shultz or even jarwin could have made that catch I highly doubt i. Well not in the same fashion. Gathers just needs to work on fundamentals and he will be fine

Linehan tookover play calling years ago and the results have largely been the same. Romo carried this team for most of Garret's tenure wether he or linehan called the plays.
There. Fixed that for ya...
