Rapoport: Zeke wants a new contract this offseason

Unfortunately, they need to pay the men and there's just so much to go around.

They don't need to pay him for at least another year. That makes sense.

They could conceivably hold him under contract for two more years without even using a franchise tag. Zeke may hold their feet to the fire though because he might be worn out in 3 more years.

Plenty of salary cap to get everyone signed and pick up a great free agent this off-season.

They would have the option year they could use before the tag would take place. I get the feeling that neither would work for them because of the Bell fallout, the RB has once again become a critical piece and every star RB and his agent is going to take advantage of that. Their feeling is that they've been underpaid and that "RB's are a dime a dozen" saying has taken it's toll.

The opposite side of the fence is that relatively speaking Zeke is being paid at the very top end of the rookie scale already. I'm ok with extending him on a short extension 2 or 3 years to give the player some security and a bit of a friendly discount to the team.

Zeke wont be here in 2019 if he holds that line. Rod Smith isn't Zeke, but hes good enough. We wont have the cap money to throw around to everyone.
No, he's not.

I love Rod, just like I love Heath. As a backup. Rod is not starting material.

Why is it OK to extend Dak early but not Zeke?

Their contracts are different. After 2019 Dak is s free agent. We hold a 5th year option on Zeke after that even though they were from the same draft class.

Rod isn't even a good backup. RB may be in play early in the 2019 draft for us.

Maybe that's part of the reason he wants to extend now, to prevent them from wearing him out in the next few years?

it's all about guaranteed money in the advent of a career threatening injury. that's what every player wants. one can easily see this point of view if this situation is in fact true, and given he's been the leading rusher 2 of 3 years, no doubt his agent will expect that he be the highest paid rb in the league. glad it's not my money.

Gee. I don't know.

Let's see. Two guys with talent. Top 5 in the draft talent. And a guy who can't throw an out route.

Decisions, decisions.

I'll get back to you.
Haha...Ok. For the ppl who really believe in Dak Prescott (Risen excluded) would you sign him over either Coop or Zeke.

Prediction - Zeke is a holdout next season which may lead to a trade. This could be his last game as a Cowboy.

Hope that isn't the case Risen but it is plausible. He watched the Bell situation and also saw Gurley get paid. This could be ugly. I think they franchise him twice and let him walk.

NOT ENOUGH MONEY. We have a thing called the salary cap. Zeke might be SOL. Or SOMEBODY else will be.
