Why the offense probably won’t be cured by a new OC

Any hope about this teams offense getting better was pretty much squashed when they hired within. There was never a search for a high profile offensive coordinator and if there was who would want to come to Dallas. Its a losing proposition because Garrett would get the credit and Jerry would get the credit for sticking with Garrett. Expect more of the same for the next 10 years.

He’s average passing at best. He’s the core issue of our passing attack.
I was trying to steer clear of blaming Dak today but ****** your right! I think he is also the core issue of the running game. If Dak wasnt such a dink and dunk QB. A true Bus driver like Dilfer or Brad Johnson at least those guys threw a pretty good deep ball and defenses respected them enough to not walk their safetys all the way up to within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Dak is 240 as big or bigger than most the Lb’s but you may be right my friend though it will cost them further if they do not utilize this aspect of his game.
Oh,I know & have stated pretty much since his debut on the NFL scene, that dude was built like a Sherman tank & to not scheme the attack plan to his naturally inherent capabilities is really kinda' mind boggling,,, so,,, what else could it really be?,I mean, prior to that mid-season game
( you know?,,, the one where Scott Linehan said we were gonna just

" sling the ball around some"?, I believe that's the one{lions game? Maybe} it was the very first that i can recall ,in where they'd allowed the utilization of the #4's strength's) to have seemingly been a planned factor in the offensive design ( some coaching 'chairs' were starting to warm up past the comfortable range,I do recall those rumblings)

The greater the team around Dak the greater the results. We saw what adding Cooper did , what we had in 2016 along with what happened in 2015 when that was taken away.

Coaching isn’t going to fix it. An All World talent around him might.

We are so determined to prove Dak is the one it might take 10 great players around him. Instead of finding 1 great QB. Good luck!!

We are not determined to prove anything Jerry is . The last time we used a 1st rd pick on a QB was Troy . That pretty much tells me Jerry is determined to find diamonds in the rough and have them develop into franchise QB like Tony did to satisfy his ego and have the league look at him as a football genius .

Dak will improve but not at the rate most impatient fans desire because he is a 4th rd pick not 1st round talent . Romo wasn't even playing his 1st 3 yrs and went on to be arguably the best statistical Qb we ever had . Dak has given us much better value getting us to post season 2 out of his 1st 3 yrs and actually winning a game .

Kolemmitts post above #23 says it all Don't worry BE HAPPY

I expect offensive improvement, no matter who the OC is, for a couple of reasons:

First, I think our Oline will be better. Maybe top 5 unit again. Getting Fred back will be huge. Looney is solid, but not close to our a healthy Fredbeard. I also expect Williams to be improved and I think Collins will have his best year, as he is in his contract year. Lastly, we will have an entire offseason with an Oline coach that uses the system the guys know. No more experiments with the Oline.

Second, Dak will have an entire offseason to work with Cooper and Gallup. Both of whom could get 1000 yard seasons.

Third, I'm hoping for a at least a few more wrinkles from our new OC. Even just a few new elements will help. IF it's Moore, I would, at very least, expect some of the Boise concepts that gets receivers open by confusing defenses pre-snap. And, I would hope the new OC could play to Daks strengths a bit more.

Great post spot on

I would just like to add that another good draft and the ability to add FAs because Dak makes 600K and not 28 million should help also

If Brady was our QB he'd struggle with this lack of playcalling
We had a top 10 offense with Romo.

Our play calling is limited because of our QB’s limits. When you can’t make all of the throws you can’t call all of the plays.

And Brady like Romo and any effective passing QB would see the field and audible out if the defense dictated changing the play.

I think it is more our scheme on offense. I do agree our ball delivery system to the WR is not accurate and precise, hopefully he improves and the schemes take advantage of what his prime skill set provides with the best in NFL running back, and pro bowl WR.
I would agree Dak needs a special scheme developed for his skill sets. And there might not be anyone in NFL who has that ability.

Our answer could be in the college ranks. The guy that I’d be most interested bringing in is Art Briles. He knows how to develop a QB with running ability. And he’s available and probably would jump at an opportunity to coach again in the US. Especially close to home.

IMO we are not that far away with Dak, he has a good head on his shoulder and has little attitude about being coached which points the arrow up. We are in a good position this offseason lots of money for FA, and signings.

Don't know about that because people have said even with lack of imagination Dak is missing more than a few people nfl open too often. I haven't saw the film for the Rams game but Louis Riddick on espn said Dak had chances but didn't pull the trigger on some things. I'd have to see the film to be sure but he's not the first or last person to say that about Dak on a consistent basis.

Hate to say it my fellow Cowboys fans but hoping we get a new OC that will make our offense more like the other successful NFL offenses like the rams, saints or chiefs is probably not going to happen.

Why?

1. Because the offensive woes are a philosophical problem that originates with the head coach.
Garrett is a conservative head coach who will NEVER coach any other way. He won’t hire an OC who wants to “open things up” offensively because that’s not Garrett. He likes to play a certain way- specifically run the ball, get the lead, control the clock, take few chances, and trust your defense to hold on or your offense to simply dominate TOP. Being offensively aggressive is not in his nature.

2. Because this team is invested to run the ball.
There are 4 first round picks in the last 7 drafts that are directly tied to having a dominant running game. Having Zeke and 3 first round OL is great except for the fact that that style of football requires your OL to physically dominate opponents, which is extremely difficult in a league where being physically dominant to win is very difficult to maintain an entire season. The NFL is a league where winning in the playoffs requires you to be able to score in different ways- by both the run and pass.

3. Because if Garrett only has one year to turn this around, he wants to do it “his way”.
Doing it “his way” means Garrett won’t trust hiring some OC that doesn’t align to his philosophy. If Garrett’s butt is on the line, I think he will be more “Garrett-like” rather than less.

For those reasons, I think Kellen Moore is Garrett’s guy as new OC. He can control Moore easier than some new guru coming from the outside. But unfortunately I expect to see pretty much the same offense next year with perhaps a few minor wrinkles.

I sure hope I’m wrong.
Jeez Louis just change the thread title to “Why I hope the offense isn’t cured by a new OC” since you obviously root for the Cowboys to lose. Tired of your stuff. Going on ignore.

I don’t think it’s about balance as much as the ability for teams like the Rams and Chiefs to scheme guys open, or scheme to exploit things they see on film. Look at what LA did to us. They had an approach for our DL alignment with interior running as well as our LBs with that jet sweep. We never come up with anything outside of a random play here and there.
Yep

The Rams and Cowboys ran threw the ball at almost exactly the same rate.

It's my number one multiple post/complaint/criticism of his ability or lack there of.

Less button hooks, less come backs, double move some slants, more pre-snap movement and more play-action.

It's not that hard.

Being dedicated to running the ball is not a problem. Just he creative with looks and motion. Run from spread a few times.

And for being so invested in running, Linehan sure did love passing around the goalline.
