To answer that I'd need to know who are his influencers now? Garrett was brought in because of the influence of his family, which is one of the reasons family run enterprises can struggle. And "proven" as in a ring holder like Payton?
He didn't make the job more attractive with these latest two gaffes about Linehan and emasculating Garrett but look at that from a HC perspective, is Garrett getting anything he doesn't deserve? The reason they wanted him was his agreement to go along because when Parcells was in charge, Booger was miserable.
If he is to bring in a proven HC, like a Payton, then it must be someone he knows well and they know him. The responsibilities have to be delineated and agreed upon in advance. Booger must respect the HC enough not to meddle and that has not been the case with Garrett. And I do not think he meddles in the game planning or calling, just most everything else. The man has been hands on most of his life and he doesn't have anything else to do.
I do think the "credit" card has been overplayed because how would that be proven, who's getting credit? Booger is the face of the franchise, he will claim and get credit for anything the team does. He's already got the media afraid to call him out as a GM, the blame goes everywhere but at him, he gets interviews when he wants them so who is not going to give him credit should they win it all? If any blame is in his direction, they're very careful how to word it and that is always with compliments attached. The only HC he could hire and not get credit isn't leaving NE.
Ole Doc CC has examined Booger and knows his problem. He, emotionally, never left Fayetteville. He was part of the biggest event in state history, bigger than Little Rock in 57 or electing a president. His roommate was his bud but they were fiercely competitive, especially for Broyles attention and Switzer's, who was a big influence on them. Both wanted to go into coaching but Booger wanted more money than that paid so he went another direction. But, that suppressed desire has never left him, he would love to be in that locker room, hanging with the players, feeling that feeling again. It was a grand feeling winning those rings, especially the one without Jimmy but there was an emptiness to it because Jimmy still gets credit, they even called it "Jimmy's team" for that last ring.
