Nope. Draft one of the better tight ends in the draft and let Witten be the backup like he's agreed to. There's so many good tight ends that can be had. I would take a chance on one of them. Eifert is damaged goods. Rookie, witten anf have Jarwin schultz right for the 3rd spot.

We have good Tight Ends. I don’t want good.. I want something more then that and Eifert may be damaged goods but he’s still one of the best when he steps on the field.

Depending on his price I’ll take him over all of the rookies except the Iowa guys.

Maybe Romo will do the same...
Romo has a secure job as an analyst. Witten did not. All three MNF announcers were probably going to be let go and the return to the Cowboys makes it look like it was Jason's choice. On the other hand if Romo did return then he and Witten could draw up more plays, according to TO.

not for 25 snaps a game

if he wants to play for a ring then take vet minimum
I personally think the "only 25 snaps a game" is just some chatter to keep the other TE's on the roster from getting pissed. No way it's what really is going to happen

I'm certain he will play more than that per game if he's healthy. I think minimum of 50% of the snaps which would be >35 snaps per game.
This.

It's just some chatter to make the other tightends happy. They didn't want to basically say to the other tightends "some retired guy is coming and taking 85% of the snaps"

If Witten has a good training camp then they'll simply spin it "well the other TE's had a chance for more reps but Witten outplayed them so he's getting more than 25%"

I actually wouldn't mind signing our guys to as friendly deals that are realistic and then rock and roll with 1 year, high pay deals to dudes who just get it done.
Throw a 1 year baby at Suh like the Rams.
At this point in the franchise, some 1 year mercenaries would be welcome.

But I do get your point of a part time player who may hold the team back and get a large salary...

Thankfully I'm listening to really rocking music and wifey and I are about to cook dinner so...

Maybe one, or two posts from me for the day and I'm out of everybody's hair.
Til tomorrow.

Great slow motion is back. Lol. Guess we wont get a TE this year. We need to get more athletic at the TE spot. We might have the most unathletic TE unit in the nfl.

Right on

He has never played less than 96% of the snaps

Haze dropping knowledge. Agreed, he should be a conditional player.
Even at $5 mil a year....what FA will we miss out on so Uncle Jason gets to come back to the clubhouse?

Honestly, I love Jason Witten. It’s the respect I have for him that makes me smh that he’s doing this- or even being allowed to do this. Too many great players never know when it’s time to hang it up. Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Deion Sanders, and others. They don’t know when it’s over.

I remember seeing the great Jim Brown, who IMO is the best RB to ever play, in an interview a few years ago explain why he retired at 29, at the top of his game. He said he wanted to retire at his peak, not on his decline. I respect that so much. Barry Sanders and Megatron are two other examples of guys who knew when to retire gracefully.

I wish Jason Witten would have realized he has no where to go but down.

I agree. Everyone said last year that the Rams were all in, and it turns out they went to the Super Bowl. You have to take some chances. We've been building and rebuilding the past 20 years and even after a good season we still seem to fail the next. It's not like we make the playoffs one year and then go deeper into the playoffs the next until finally we win a Super Bowl. Every season is basically start from scratch. I think the fans would love an all in approach if it worked like it did for the Rams.

I get you but I don't believe he can step on the field consistently and be one of the best tight ends. He also looked horrible in the games he did play last season. He looked like he was in decline.

You were thinking that an announcement about signing Witten was going to contain a list of plays Witten would run? How does signing a player mean Moore isn't going to change things up?

Just a hunch. I think signing Witten means they are not really planning on changing the offense. It will be more of the same.

You think they are going to base the offense on one aging guy back for one season and planning to play about 40% of the snaps? And why? It's not as if changes in the offense would mean Witten can't function or run a route or catch a ball.

There was a time we thought they would stick with Romo forever too, and Witten is not in the same situation to dictate that he once was.
