You haven't seen enough from Witten since his return to make those statements. Those are just assumptions you are making based on how he played in 2017. Everyone in camp is saying Witten has gained a step and looks fresh.

You do understand Witten is the Cowboy's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, right? In 2013 he was averaging a TD every other game. He's earning a great deal more respect than you are giving him. He's looked great in the red zone this training camp which is probably where the media gets this idea that he'll help in that area. But I guess if you have ignored his training camp progress you wouldn't know anything about that. Willful ignorance of Witten's progress may explain why you feel the way you do about him. Maybe? First off, NFL coaches are not in the business of prolonging aging veterans’ careers; nor are they in the business of promoting younger players into starting spots that those players don’t yet deserve.

NFL coaches are in the business of winning football games. The most successful business plan in this endeavor has dictated putting those players who the coaches feel give the them the best chance of winning on the field as much as possible.

The coaches work with these players every day and have much more knowledge than do fans as to which players should be playing and when.

Rather than asking why the coaches might decide to play a “progress stopper” instead of the younger players, ask yourself why would they choose to “progress” into the season by playing two guys (Jarwin and Schultz) who can’t decisively beat out a 37yo guy who’s a year out of football and who spent last season sitting on his butt in a TV booth?

What does his career totals in receptions and receiving yards have to do with being a red zone threat?

You do understand in 1152 receptions Witten’s scored just 69 times, right?

Comparatively speaking, Rob Gronkowski has 79 TDs on just 521 career receptions.

That’s a scoring threat.

Witten is an ironman; he’s got big accumulated numbers due to toughness and longevity. Let’s not act like he’s bringing something dynamic to the offense.

I think it’s very possible that Jarwin will be better than Witten this year. Jarwin is a really good athlete.

But last season Jarwin still wasn’t quite ready. He was still really raw. Witten’s level of play would be an upgrade over last years production from the tight end position.

But yeah Jarwin is the future.
