I can see both sides of the issue, not just Gottleib or Aikman's comments.
Andrew Luck, is a very smart well rounded human being. Check out Kevin Clarks article on the Ringer.

I just think he took too much of a beating, and who ever you want to blame go ahead. No team should have a QB who's heart is not into it.
If this was 30 years ago, I'm sure Luck would not have made $100 million in his first 7 years so this decision might not have been as easy from a financial perspective.
Luck is not the kind of guy to have spent a bunch of money, I'm sure he is set for life. I agree he is walking away from ~200 million dollars so do think of that.

yea but...

the injury did not go away with the retirement announcement.

he still gonna have to do rehab

it's still gonna hurt

put off the retirement until after rehab

then make a life altering decision

after the pain has subsided

All he was dealing with was some pain and practicing on a limited basis. He was set to start week 1.

Aug. 14: Colts coach Frank Reich lays out a timetable for Luck's Week 1 availability. Luck watches practice against the Browns with his left ankle taped.

Aug. 17: There was no official update, but Andrew Luck going through a vigorous warm-up routine before the Colts' preseason game against Cleveland looked good.

Aug. 20: Here's coach Frank Reich, upon announcing that Luck wouldn't practice heading into the Colts' Week 3 preseason game: "Really all we have right now is a combination of full-speed movement and pain threshold. It’s that combination of how much full speed and what level. It’s on a continuum, right?"

Does not sound like a guy that will miss an extended period of time.
You know last offseason Irsay said he would not trade Jacoby Brissett even for a first round pick.
I'm sure the Colts had some idea, as Luck is a very straightforward honest guy. The man has a flip phone and runs a book club.
I would love to have a player like that lead my football team. It's sad to see him go, he is probably one of my favorite players in the league.
No nonsense kind of guy.

Based on the information from his press conference, and that of his HC, I respect him for what he did. I just have an issue with when he did it.
Not to sound like a dead horse. I do too considering the overall timing. Kinda crappy with that. But the debate will rage on.

NOt the vibe I got from Riech. He was supportive, but not happy. His exact quote "We understand and support Andrew, but it doesnt make it any easier".

People can have any opinion they want. From what I have seen, its pretty even on the subject.

I didn't read the whole thread, so pardon me if this has already been said.

From what I've read, he's mostly retiring because he's mentally out of it. I think that started with the shoulder injury when he was urged to use the team surgeon and the surgery was flubbed. Reports at the time said he had to go to Britain on his own IIRC to get it redone, and he felt like his FO wasn't taking care of him. It was a long hard rehab that wouldn't have been necessary had he used a better surgeon in the first place. IMO that's where he started to lose it.

This Doug Gottlieb is a dirtbag. It's Luck's life. If he wants to quit playing football, he has every right to. No one else is inside of Luck's head. During the offseason, he was probably confident that he would heal up and be ready for the season. For whatever reason, he's decided it's not worth it to continue. It's his right to quit if he wants to. People ought to cut him some slack. It's a rough game and he's decided he's had enough. Just wish him a good life. Aikman is totally right to call out this Gottlieb scumbag. I would be angry if someone told me how to live my life.

....he just retired. Which specifically tells you what he was dealing with. This didn't come out of nowhere, it came because of his injury. And the coach is simply the coach, "day to day" means absolutely nothing - just a week before the last update, they were stating not only a calf injury, but also a bone injury, to pretty much stating they have no idea what the heck is going on with it.

https://coltswire.usatoday.com/2019...andrew-luck-calf-injury-bone-issue-jim-irsay/

"When tests were done on the calf, Luck said the results showed no tear in the calf and that surgery was dismissed immediately. That’s good, but there is still so much that is unknown about what Luck is dealing with that it is nearly impossible to predict a timetable."

Let's also remember, he already had a discussion with the owner and the coach about his retirement at this point. Luck was most likely not going to be starting the season - he was nowhere near close to being ready. He barely even participated in camp.

You misspelled Texas Tough.

Doug Gottlieb isn't a dirt bag. He's Texas Tough and recognizes when a player isn't Texas Tough like he is. #USA

You mean right vs. wrong?

Opinions aren’t right or wrong...they are opinions only. DG gave his. People don’t have to agree with his view, and I’m not saying I do. My only point is that him being controversial helps his career...it doesn’t hurt it. Despite how you or I feel about it.

Yet I showed you where it said he was practicing and was scheduled to start week 1.
