Maybe one of the only people on the planet whos judgment he trust over his own. Although I think JJ concedes more than we know these days.

I agree. Jerry is basically acting as a tie breaker between the scouting department and coaches. HE decides whose opinion to accept b/c he doesn't do the work required to form his own. Belechek would be an easier rubber stamp.

He stuck with Garret b/c by all accounts Jason Garret is really impressive in meetings and interviews. I think JG talked his way into this job and has been selling Jerry on what ails the cowboys ever since.......always pointing the finger away from himself. This year is just the perfect storm b/c Jason had all the pieces and couldn't do anything with it. No major injuries to blame............ Jerry is realizing its been 10 years and his team is 6-6. Jerry is also realizing he's 77 and doesn't have the time nor the inclination to get involved in a rebuild. He's got no choice but to hire a big name with a track record players respect. It makes perfect sense.
My thought process exactly

I've thought this whole year that Garrett would move into the front office after this season no matter what. Its a better fit for him and it will be more money for less hours on the job.

If that really was the plan, Jerry (and the rest of the FO) are the type to lay the groundwork way ahead of time. Talking to mutual friends, wink and nod conversations with agents, etc.

I think Broaddus is right in that he is hearing Jerry is loading up a huge move on the next HC, not a flavor of the month assistant. It could be someone like Belichick or one of college guys like Saban or Meyer, but it will take a huge financial move to make that happen. And Jerry isn't afraid to do that, he never has.
Jerry is unpredictable , so no one really knows whats going to happen.

Your entire narrative is that Jerry only hires yes men. He clearly has hired people that will stand up to and counter him.

Wade convinced Jerry that Alan Ball was sufficient at S as well as the horrid CB situation. Garrett got the club to start heavily and repeatedly investing top 100 picks in OL and DL. Heck, he even let Chan Gailey convince him to pass on Randy Moss for Greg Ellis.

This notion that Jerry only listens to himself is just ignorant. The problem is when he listens to buffoons like Lacewell and Phillips.

There's a huge difference between "yes men" and people who will only push back so far. Heck you can even point out that although Jerry bristled at the level of control he had given Parcells, he also convinced him to take Ware instead of Spears, which is one of Jerry's post-Jimmy career highlights.

The point is Jerry is comfortable with working with the Wade's and Garretts of the world because while certainly he listens to them, at the end of the day he does have final say with only a limited amount of conflict. He didn't have that with Parcells. He won't with Belichick.

And there's also a difference between a coach like Belichick who owns the room and has all of the skins on the wall and Garrett who - doesn't. Again the point is not necessarily just control, it's credit. And if Jerry brings in Bill the story of the next trophy in Dallas would not be Jerry finally won another one, it will be Jerry had to bring in the GOAT of HCs to do it. And I think if that is a storyline Jerry was interested in he would have fired Jason years ago.

There is no source. The patriots do not confirm coaching contracts and nobody talks. Everybody who follows the NFL knows this ...........so we are left to infer from things we do know..........like it makes no sense that he would paint himself into a corner with a long term deal with no outs given that he has all the leverage in that relationship. We also know Josh McDaniels changed his mind at the last moment about being the Colts HC so he could return to being NE's OC...........hmmmmm why would he do that........

Jerry was a younger man in 2003. Don't underestimate the effect of age on a man's view of the world and his place in it. Jerry's got his gold jacket and all the money he could ever want or require. The one thing he can't buy is a super bowl and its the only things left for him to accomplish. Firing JG won't be done easilly or for no good reason. The next hire won't be a freshly minted HC.
Man, you are right on the money with your comments on this situation....

You know you guys should just cool it.
This is a cowboys board to discuss any and all possibilities, if you don't like it, just don't read the comments .

But it's so incredibly outlandish, what is to discuss here? A hope and a prayer?

Might as well put this in the "Who do you want as our next HC" thread that is stickied.
