I'm sorry for your loss, brother. Obviously you didn't feel the same way your son-in-law did, fortunately for Natasha.

The funny thing is they have one cat which he did like (more of a lap cat than what Natasha was) and they recently adopted a young marmalade orange male who has some medical issues that they need to give medication daily too... So it's not like he hates cats, it's just Natasha was too "Alpha-female" for him. lol

Oh well, we loved her for that attitude– thought it was endearing.

I wasn’t a huge dog person to about 10 years ago. My wife and I have two mixed breed bigger dogs. Dallas is our oldest she’s 8 years old and Callie who’s 4 years old. I get emotional thinking about losing them especially Dallas since it was just her and I for 6 years before my wife and I moved in together. I m sorry for everyone’s losses here

If it weren't painful, then our pets didn't mean much to us.

Sorry to hear this. I lost my cat back in 2010. She had kidney disease, and I tried to prolong her life with the vet's help. A special diet was supposed to allow her to live about another 2 years, but it didn't work. I came home from work one day to find her dead. That really hurt. I got another cat three years later, but I still miss the one who died, the one named Nikki. She was a cat who got abandoned when some people moved out of their apartment, and I found her one day and took her in. She will always be missed. I'm glad I finally adopted another cat, but I waited three years just because I wasn't over it. The new cat's name is Rosie.

From what I've been reading kidney disease is major killer of cats & dogs.

I would have given anything to get another couple years from Natasha, but that's how it works sometimes. She started going down hill a couple months ago. Gradual weight loss... Not eating like she use too, which became hardly eating at all. Not drinking either. Her eyes recessed in their sockets due to dehydration.

My preference is for our animals to pass at home rather than having to put them down, and in this case we were able to do that because the cat was still able to make it to the litter box... But I'm thinking that if she had not passed over the weekend we would have had to make that decision on Monday (yesterday).

Know all about the grief. Other than my wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson, I'm around our animals more than other people so when we lose an animal it's a huge loss.

I felt super bad because she died while I was away at work. I wish I could have been there.

Animals seem to prefer to be alone when they die, so don't feel bad about not being there. My dog had what turned out to be a spleen torsion when he was 10 years old, and he just went into the woods behind my house and laid down, ready to die. He was usually back at the door right after going to the bathroom, so when I had to go get him, I knew something was seriously wrong. Fortunately, I was able to get him to the vet in time to get his spleen removed. He lasted another 2 years after that.

Boy isn't that the truth.

Yes they seem to prefer it.

Have lost 4 kitties since my wife & I were married.

The very first one happened on Father's Day, 2003. Brandy was a pure-breed Maine Coon who I found laying dead on the kitchen floor when I got up.

That was a stunner. She was only 8 years-old. Took her to one vet and that quack looked at her blue lips and suggested she ate something she shouldn't, which destroyed my wife thinking that cat got into something she shouldn't. We took the cat to another vet who did a kitty-autopsy because we weren't happy with the conclusion of vet #1. Vet #2 said Brandy had a heart defect which come to find out is somewhat common with pure-breeds.

The other 3 cats that have passed away all have hidden somewhere in the house until they passed.

Kidney disease took both of my most recent cats. (They were siblings.) However, there was a 6 year gap between their passing.

One thing to all pet owners: Monitor what pet foods you buy...Buy American and pay attention to the ingredients. Pay attention to recalls. Chinese produced food has poisoned more pets because they don't have the same protections and standards. So many kidney failures and other pet deaths are due to contaminated foods. (Granted, not all, there's the genetic factor.) Even a little contaminated food can cause enough damage to make a pet sick now but produce problems later.

Football differences/opinions aside, I’ve lost track of this thread. Sorry to hear about the losses. In all honesty, I didn’t read most of them because it’s a tear jerker. I’m a sick *******, I would fatally hurt anyone that harmed an animal unprovoked. They’re our best friends and much better than humans.

Condolences fellow pet lovers.

I lost one of my little rescue puppies last night. I had her 4 years and 28 days. I was too shocked to cry last night, but the tears have found their way out today.

She came with another puppy from the same horrible puppy mill as a package deal. I couldn't adopt in my area, so I looked in the Dallas area and was prepared to go get them. When the lady saw where I was from, she almost filed me away until she saw a special note that I promised to raise them as Cowboy fans even though I'm in Saint's territory. It amused her and she contacted me. She was so wonderful and appreciated my interest. They'd been up for adoption for months without interest. After she picked me to take them, other's started showing interest.

The lady drove to my house to deliver my babies and paid the adoption fee for me. To this day she calls me and my puppies her success story. I still have to tell her. I wasn't prepared for that or finding out how badly they'd been abused. I'd stretch my hand out to pat them and they'd withdraw like they were about to be hit. They didn't know how to be loved. It took over half the time I'd had them to open up and show some trust. I haven't placed demands on them and tried to be as peaceful and loveable as I could be. A home with clean water and fresh food. She had no teeth, so I cut her food to be easier to swallow.

I'd gotten them as adults and they were given temporary names until adopted. I named them (Yorkies) after Dan Bailey and Cole Beasley. Bailey stuck, but Beasley didn't. She was so sweet that I named her Mommaw after my grandmothers. I know I'm rambling and apologize for it. I'm trying to get myself together enough to turn full attention to Bailey so she doesn't pull a Where The Red Fern Grows on me.

Thanks for taking time for my story. It may not make sense, but I can't see it clearly right now.

Sorry for your loss. It sucks what people will do to innocent animals so you taking them in like that was a wonderful thing. You're in my thoughts.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mommaw, Xelda. Knowing you, I'm sure she was very happy eventually. You saved her soul, doll.

Thank you @Crazed Liotta Eyes, @Runwildboys and @dreghorn2. I still can't wrap my heart or mind around this loss.

Sorry to hear, an early loss is a head scratcher for sure

My sister lost her Boston terrier of 13 years last night and our little Chi Jack is now experiencing seizures to go along with his enlarged heart at 11 years old. My wife is a complete mess right now just thinking at the inevitable :banghead:
