I may be alone but I still can’t believe we are moving forward with Jaylon and not LVE

Lve has his problems but smith is a bigger liability on the field than LVE imo

LVE has a pro bowl on his resume.

They wouldn't pick up the 5th. Too expensive.

They'll work out a long term deal with LVE.

Didn't Taco get in some trouble as well though?

Not off the field as far as I know. He and Marinelli just soured on one another to the best of my recollection. Given that he was Marinelli's guy, the coach shouldn't have that option. You stood up for the guy, you MAKE IT WORK! Or you can BOTH LEAVE!

You only activate a guy's 5th year option when it saves you money over resigning him.
If he has struggled with injuries, like LVE, you simply let him walk or you resign him to a contract that won't be over 9 million for 1 year.
Unless LVE is garbage this year or gets hurt again, we will offer to resign/extend him during the year to a contract that helps us with the salary CAP.

The Cowboys and most teams don't make these types of decisions before they need to make them.

Quinn repeated that the coaching staff needs to see the players on the field and spend time with them before making any decisions about positions and starters.

There is a medical risk with LVE and picking up the 5th year option would just increase the financial risk. If he stays healthy for 2021 then the risk is much lower than it is now.

When healthy LVE has been better than Jaylon.

Who says we are moving ahead with just Smith?

There was no benefit to cutting him now, at least from a cap perspective. They could make him a June 1 cut but that this point, the savings might not be all that big of a deal. So I would not assume that because we didn't cut him now, that means we are going to hold him forever. If he plays poorly this year, he's likely a cut next offseason as his dead money wouldn't be terrible.

Despite people claiming otherwise, LVE has been been pretty shoddy himself. Now one can blame injuries, but there are things he did on the field last year and the year before that had little to do with injuries. Overrunning plays, getting caught up in the chum, guessing the wrong hole, etc. Smith has become the defensive whipping boy, and rightfully so, but some have given LVE a pass when he's just as culpable.

could be both, could be neither.

We have Gregory and LVE both out of contract at end of year and due large raises.

Jaylon becomes eligible for release with cap savings in tact next year.

But we haven't even seen 1 down of Quinn coached defense so it is all speculation and guesses.

In a 3-4 it could be Micah replaces Gregory while he replaces either LVE/Jaylon in a 4-3.
With a base 3-4 and a nickel 4-2-5 it leaves lots of options.

In the last football we saw Micah Parson play (Cotton Bowl) he blitzed virtually every play and flat dominated.
We saw some spottier efforts when he played heavily off-ball.

The Jaylon experiment has to end already. I don't think he will ever be that good of a player. But the worst thing is that Jerry has some kind of emotional attachment to him. That's dangerous. Jerry will try to prove to us fans that his right all along no matter what it takes for him to do so .

Yes Jerry's done that too often in the past.

But I think that's changing, I'm sure Jerry hears, or is told, how fans are increasingly frustrated with no SBs, once in a while playoff wins and dumb personnel decisions. Not to mention he'll be 79 years old during this season, time's running out for him to get "his" Super Bowl trophy, one not tainted by Jimmy Johnson's influence. And he has to feel that he needs to start turning over more control to Stephen, et al, again due to Jerry's age, Stephen needs to be able to take over the team at moment's notice.

In a way I feel sorry for Jerry, he took a huge gamble buying the Cowboys, took a huge gamble firing Landry summarily and hiring a head coach who'd never set a foot on an NFL field as any kind of a coach. And for a few years it was glorious. The accolades poured in, new fans signed on by the car load and he made obscene (if there is such a thing) gobs of money. Made the Hall of Fame.

But it's not enough. He's never gotten the kind of adoration he craves. Maybe that's his problem, most of us would be well satisfied with what he's accomplished, but it's not enough for him. Sisyphus all over again.

Sad.

FWIW if everyone is healthy and ready to roll I'd go:

3-3-5 with Parsons as my joker/bandit/ace whatever you call the move OLB that you attack with.
That now popular collegiate defense is about as good as it gets versus Air Raid concepts and allows for the 3 double cloud defense.
You need 3 powerful down linemen where 1 of those 3 can also really get after the QB. Then you need depth to sub those guys out so they stay fresh.
But with only 3 down it's easier to build depth.
A lot of guys can play 2 of the down positions.
You can edge even harder to 2 down linemen with 1 more stand up rusher on sure passing downs.

A potential 3-3-5 is:

End: DLaw/Hill/Dorance
NT: Urban/Bohanna/Osa
3T: Gallimore/Hill/Osa

Weak OLB/LOLB/Jack/Big Safety/Coverage LB: Neal/Cox
Mike: Jaylon/LVE/Gregory
Sam/DPR: Parsons/Gregory/Anae

CB1: Diggs/Joseph/AB
CB2: Joseph/AB/Wright
CB3: ABrown/Lewis
FS: Kazee/Robinson/Lewis
SS: Wilson/Mukuamu/Neal

Notes: I think Golston will battle in there but I like Hill's first step quickness at End so put him in there in some sub packages.

Jalyon/LVE/Parsons are your 3 most gifted LBs but they may not play a traditional LB role.

Not picking up his option doesn't mean we are moving on. I am with you though. I personally think LVE is the much better player.

This correct, but LVE’s injuries and Jaylon’s decline in play wasn’t due to Richard’s leaving . Quinn’s scheme may put both in a position to play better, but it won’t lower the chances of LVE’s injuries or improve Jaylon’s lack of instincts or inability to take on blockers .

Yes ...... If LVE cannot stay healthy he is done ..... Unless they treat him like Sean Lee who for some reason got a free pass from the front office and from most fans.

I do not agree with your assessment of Jaylon so no reason for us to even discuss that.

Some don't even watch the games, they spout what they believe will arouse the masses. How can you both miss tackles, fail at filling gaps, occasionally get trucked; but one leads the team in tackles, while the other leads the team on IR?

If our basic D formation becomes the nickel or a dime packages, that means only 2 LBs will be required on the field.

So, if rookies Parsons and Cox end up performing better than veterans Jaylon Smith and LVE, what do you do with the underachieving veterans? Keep paying them or trade them?

If they're underachieving, trade? Something tells me nobody would offer much if anything in trade.

2 completely seperate issues. While they were early in giving smith an extension he doesn't miss games like LVE does. LVE has an opportunity to earn another contract.

So why was Jaylon one of the NFL's top tacklers last year? The DL needs to do their jobs better to allow the LB's to do their jobs better.
I will wait until to see how they both do this year before I say it is time for them to go. We know what a mess the defense was last year scheme and injuries.

I would disagree with top lb. He did make a lot of tackles. But he didn't make a lot of big plays. In fact several teams ran right over him.

One of them should be gone before the start of the season, and the other "if said person hasn't improved" should be gone after this season. I don't care which, they've had ample time to show something. And if LVE gets hurt one more time, just move on.
