Yes, AAV is really the only way to compare. Dallas chose to take the smaller cap hit in '19 & '20 and spread the bonus out and restructure like they did-that is not on the player.

except that we’re talking here and now. what he’s being paid NOW and for the remainder of his contract is not worth what we’re getting. i didn’t fault the player, that’s not relevant

IMO.
1. They don't have true leverage over D-Law at this point. They've asked about a paycut but they know the depth chart is bare right now to really counter his rejection.
2. They may lose Gregory. I don't think they are willing to lose both, and possibly Armstrong and rebuild both DE spots in one offseason.
3. FA will provide depth, but not close to a starter IMO, unless of course someone like Miller wanted to come here/work out a reasonable deal.
4. The draft is where they could go back to D-Law with another pay cut or get cut scenario. Say just for example they draft a LDE like Karlaftis, Cam Thomas(SDSU), Hall (Houston) etc.. they don't have proven talent but at least guys with starting upside and depth to rotate for life without Law. And at that point most teams have spent most of their cap/nabbed starters so the payday for Law could be less.

They asked him to take a cut? I thought they asked him to restructure. Where did you here they asked him to take a pay cut?

Yeah it was a pay cut. Most of these contracts have built-in in restructures, and management doesn't even have to ask.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is likely to don a different uniform in 2022 after reportedly declining the team's request to take a pay cut. The two-time Pro Bowl player is scheduled to make $19 million this season with a cap hit of $27 million, per Spotrac.4 days ago

They have nothing on the line, especially if Gregory goes. They have to keep DLaw.

Imagine every offensive line licking their chops at that lineup. EDIT: whoops I missed tank on there the first time. Without Tank it’s scrub city.

So with him or without him Dallas won, I think 27 mill for him is not something Dallas can do. He is not a dominating factor. I think he is a quality player but I don't see him as a must. I do think Dallas has to keep him or Gregory, I think losing both and hoping to find a quality end rusher in the draft who can come in day 1 and perform, is asking too much. I think Gregory can be signed for half of what DLaw cost us right now.

That’s an oversimplified argument that literally can be made about any player we’ve won a game without.

Also, your “7-1 without him” claim was wrong. If you really want to follow that line of argument through, the team had a higher winning percentage with him playing than without him.

He is a must in the absence of a quality alternative. Put the question of money aside, the defense is worse without Lawrence.

it would and what i wish we’d do with Amari. Tank is a really good player, and i’d rather have him on the team than not there’s just no universe where (no matter how you got there) he’s worth close to 27 mil for a season

Best coarse of action would be keep him 1 more yr, draft his replacement and give him a yr of development.
Here's where I begin to have a problem.

We drafted a DE in the 3rd round last year.

Granted, he didn't show much and I can't blame anyone for not wanting to count on Golston.

However....if this is the case, the "we draft really well" narrative has to not be the case.

3rd round picks need to play a significant role in year two when you employ the strategy that this team does.

I think we should trade every good player we have, get a lot of high draft pick and suck for the next 3 years so we can get Arch Manning when he comes out....:)

I think you have to keep Coop. Let Gallup go.
you may prefer that, but it has been reported that a deal for Gallup is getting done and according to Fisher for possibly in the 10 million range. If that is the case, Cooper is GONE and is exactly what i would prefer. He aint putting up Cooper Kupp numbers, and thats what it would take to justify a 20 million per salary to a wr.

I read it's above $10. They initially said we were $6 million off per year. ****NOT-AN-OFFICIAL-SOURCE*** posted we were offering $6 and they reported it was way more. I still say it's 12-13 range

Once again, Ill defer to Fisher who is actually in the building and speaks to people that know things. He said looking at 5 years in the 10 million range. So lets wait and see. This should be getting done in the next day or 2 as they need to have Gallup done so they can decide on Cooper.

I believe his expectation is to replace Armstrong, not DLaw. A quality rotational player, who also can play on special teams.
