If someone says Smith is "overrated" they are wrong. Same as if they would say Larry Allen is overrated. I rarely see Smith outside of the top 5 in rankings - the most heated that debate gets is when he's put him next to Barry Sanders and people say he's better (He's not, and again, that's okay because he's still one of the all-time greats)
Depends what you are comparing....imo.

Complete RB, Emmitt all day.

Pure runner, Barry in a landslide.

Yes, those are the types of things we always hear from Cowboy haters. They change the argument based on the topic being discussed. Emmitt wasn’t that great because he had a great Oline. But if Oline is being discussed, they say the Oline wasn’t that good. Emmitt made them. Troy wasn’t that great. He just played in great teams. But they never say the same thing about Montana, who played with the best receiver ever and was also on great teams. You can always count on circular arguments from Cowboy haters.

100% He had Rice, Taylor, Jones, Craig and very good o-line. Played in the west coast offense which was perfect for that personal. He had great success and certainly should be considered an all time great, but at the same time why can't he be knocked down for the talent he played with?

I’ve always said Barry was the “prettier” runner, but Emmitt was the better runner. Barry was more prone to bust a big run, but he also had a lot of negative plays. Emmitt was more efficient, a great receiver, and a far superior blocker. If it was third and goal from the three with 45 seconds to go go in the Super Bowl when you’re down by six, who would you rather hand the ball to? Easy answer.

Because he didn’t play for the Dallas Cowboys.

I think Aikman's biggest argument is his elevated play in the 92, 93, and 95 post-seasons. While I think Aikman had the ability to be an all-time great, his argument for this is a big "What if" - What if Aikman played in a more pass happy offense? It's a fun debate, but when we are debating what actually happened, it's hard to put Aikman over players we saw in a pass happy offenses that relied more heavily on QB play.

As I said earlier, Aikman is one of my favorite players - heck one of my favorite people. I love the guys honesty, even though many Cowboys fans have soured on his personality over the years. But he was a perfect QB for that team in the 90s for his leadership skills.

I judge Aikman on what he did in the playoffs. Give me a 11-4 record in the playoffs with 3 super bowl wins and an MVP any day over a bunch of regular season stats with out a super bowl or only 1 super bowl. I guess the best way to play the what if game is to ask these questions, was Aikman a smart QB who could read the field? Yes. Was he accurate? One of the best ever. Did he have a strong arm? Yes. Was he a leader? Yes. So just judging by that and what he did in the biggest games tells me if he played in a pass happy offense he would have put up the same type of numbers some of the others had. Just my opinion. He was more than capable he just played in a different offense. Having the all time leading rusher and rushing TD of all time takes away from passing stats.

Barry had some amazing runs that make your head spin for sure. The complete running back who could block, catch out of the backfield, goal line ect. was Emmitt. Emmitt played all 3 downs and you didn't take him out at the goal line. Pure runner yes Barry was a freak but there is more to playing that position. Emmitt's toughness and heart was a big factor for his greatness as well.

I agree with you for once. Smith was a great runner, an outstanding blocker and pass protector, and a great leader on the field. Sanders may have more elusive runs, but many of his runs resulted in negative plays. As Irvin has said, Barry did not have the want to that could have made him the greatest. Sanders didn’t want to to be the all-time rushing leader. He quit. He didn’t have the desire to be the best all around RB. He quit. He didn’t have the determination to be the best. Smith did.
Surprise, surprise. We agree on a couple of things. That is the very reason why I never block posters. If you refuse to listen to opposing views because you disagree with certain posters, you learn nothing . It is not wise to avoid listening to information that you disagree with. You will never learn to understand opposing views.

Funny, I’ve always thought he was criminally under rated. Because of Emmitt and the winning formula of pounding the ball, Airman's stats always took a back seat for the benefit of the team and winning.

If you imaging that team with a different RB, Aikman would have put up video game stats and won the passing title with EASE.

Tell the friend that’s he’s an idiot.

Me and a buddy are in a disagreement. He says Aikman was overrated and he's in the Hall of Fame because he was on a great team and that he was a bus driver.
I said to him, without Aikman Cowboys don't win 3 Super Bowls if any at all. Aikman did what he had to do and it wasn't about gawdy stats but if Aikman had to put up big numbers than he could have.
Who in their right football mind would think he was over rated ?
Their is a reason he in the HOF and it wasn't just because he won 3 SBs.

If a 25 year old Troy was time warped to today, how many GMs do you think would say "na, we're good with what we have". My guess is zero, Chiefs and Bills included.

In this era of fantasy football, can't breathe on the QB, illegal contact penalties by DBs, etc everything looks amazing offensively if compared to the 90s or before.

It was a different era with different rules. 25 TD passes lead the league in 1992. Rarely did anyone throw over 30 TD passes until they changed the offensive rules to favor the QB and WRs. Guys like Aikman and Steve Young would tear up this era.

I'm very comfortable defending a first Ballot HOF QB with 3 super bowl rings.
Yeah, but we were talking about present day. His stats, today's game. Read what I responded to historian.

Once Aikman lost Irvin, he was done. He was a very good QB on a loaded team and he road Emmitt's coat tails right into the HOF. Weather that gets your panties in a bunch is your problem. His last 4 years he averaged a TD or less a game and his completion % sucked. He had almost as many picks as TD's for his career. Put your era spin on that for me.

Tune into Monday night football and watch Mahomes pass Aikman's career TD mark in his 4th season. Have a few drinks first, it will help.

People talk about Troy being overrated as he was some castoff who ended here out of nothing after the team was assembled.

And what about the "intangibles" that still are so valuable and praised to this day? Intelligence, poise? Playoff-clutch? Troy absolutely excelled.

Try was nails in the clutch. He was overshadowed a bit by Emmitt. He was maybe the most accurate passer the league has ever seen. That is what separates him from others. His stats might not be elite, but all he did was win big games every time.

exactly. He wanted the ball in his hands when we needed a play. He thrived on that. Another guy that gets vastly overlooked was Danny White. Dude took 3 aging teams to 3 NFC TITLE GAMES and its a shame he didnt win a title. He deserved better but didnt have the teams around him that Troy did. BTW Danny took 1 team to the Title game with Timmy Newsome and ron springs as the starting tail backs 1 year. I think TD was dinged up that year.
