There is a reason why you don't run a play at the end there.

a) penalty will stop the clock
b) false start can put you out of field goal range anyways and also stop the clock
c) bad handoff could lead to fumble
d)runner could fumble
e)players can get hurt

So many reasons why you just take the knee in that situation.

Knee or dive up the middle. It is amazing we blew a game that almost was impossible to lose. More amazing this happens more than once.

We must be cursed and I'm only half-kidding

it's like the denver play when they got the first down on the 1 half yd line without scoring. it's beyond explanation. sometimes you have to wonder if this franchise is legitimately cursed.

yep and throw in how feet tangled is PI on us but not on them

Sometimes, you just get caught up in the play. It came at a bad time, but when you're on the field, you're thinking about making sure you do your job, and that's to keep defenders off your running back/quarterback.

The holding eventually led to the demise of the Cowboys. But I can't get terribly upset about it. It happens.

OK, but I doubt you would be so forgiving if Tanner ran out of bounds.

No curse about it, we have a coach who has no concept of situational football, though he likes to talk big about it all the time.

In the Denver game I was screaming at the tv to let them score, force them into the endzone if you have to. Anything to get the ball back at that point.

And here I was screaming to kneel it down.

It's not rocket science. For all the fluffing Garrett gets about his ivy league resume, he isn't all that bright to me. Was never qualified to be an offensive coordinator, and certainly not a head coach.

f) QB can slip on the kneel down and fumble away the ball.

Probably shouldn't even hike it.

honestly what do we expect from a guy who has only been coaching since 2005. that is an incredibly short time period. especially when you compare that with the coaching resume of the avg head coach in the league who has been doing it since the 80s/early 90s. yet somehow thru country club politics he was given the keys to the most lucrative/prestigious football franchise in the world. all done with smoke, mirrors, and politics. its one of the biggest con jobs in human history.

Wait, you can't take a knee. Didn't you know the clock stops on those? We would have only burned 2 seconds.

...The clock doesn't stop on a kneel down.

It was first down, each kneel down itself is going to burn at least 2-3 seconds if not more. Let's say 6 seconds. So 1:18 left (and I think that is conservative).

The Lions only had TWO timeouts left. So after 3rd down, you're going to get 40 seconds off run down. That leaves them with 38 seconds left. No timeouts.

Instead they had a 1:02 seconds. Huge difference.

Exactly why I was furious when he was even hired as the offensive coordinator. It made no sense, but I accepted the reports that he was some offensive guru in the making. Never saw it. And was astonished when he wasn't fired but instead made HC... Astonished that he is still head coach today...

Quarterbacks take 7-step drops to kneel down?

First, you said the situations were the same. They're not.
Second, your scenario is reasonable because you're a coach couch - and I'm not saying that disrespectfully.
But real coaches don't quarterbacks backpedaling to take a kneel down. You don't complicate these scenarios. If you need down, you move a little to the right or left then you immediately get down. You don't start retreating then kneel down.

Again, it sounds good in theory. But there's a reason you don't see teams doing that.

QB's have always done that when it's necesary. Take a few steps back and when the pressure is coming take a knee. Are you really saying you have never seen that? Besides that is not the point, fine, let's say it's not 7 seconds, let's make it 4, it's the same thing. At that point they were just running to take time off, if you are doing that, why risk it, just kneel down. If they did that we would probably be sitting here at 5-3.

It will be interesting if we do not make the playoffs to see what Jerry does. Average is gonna win this division but the way we blow games who knows what we do.

Deep down I think Jason knows he's over matched for this job and he knows deep down in his soul that he will not get this opportunity anywhere else if he were to be fired here in Dallas. It's why I believe he will have no issue throwing another coach (Kiffin) under the bus at the end of the season or being a puppy dog for Jerry and his erratic mood swings. It's either this or go back to being a QB coach because he has zero chance of being a head coach or offensive coordinator anywhere else in this league.

There was 1:24 on the clock on first and 10. Any experienced coach would have taken the knee and try and run out the clock. But no not Garrett. He had to try and run it outside thus causing a holding penalty to be called on our tackle.

Had we just ran out the clock like any smart coach would have done this game would have been over. This is a coaching blunder of massive proportion folks. This game in on Garrett pure and simple.

Thats just Garrett being Garrett.....................................finding a way to lose when no other team would....................thats our boy!!!!

What about taking three kneel downs and then have Romo run around on 4th down and take a safety? How much time would be left?

When Jerry finally brings himself to fire him, Garrett will get an assistant's job at Princeton.

No way Jerry can look at the fans with a straight face and say he is bringing Opie back for another year of this crap if we blow the division.

If Opie cant win the division this year of all years...........he is never going to win it.

Winning this division this year won't mean much. Its just a ticket to a first round home playoff loss. Is that enough to bring Garrett back?

I'd like to believe that but it's Jerry we're talking about.

I have to say I am surprised the division is as poor as it is. It's just awful.
