Trade rumors swirling about Carpenter, Spears

Rumor has it that the Cowboys are shopping former first-round picks DE Marcus Spears and LB Bobby Carpenter at the Senior Bowl.

Carpenter simply isn't a fit in a 3-4 defense, which makes Bill Parcells' decision to pick him pretty puzzling. Carpenter couldn't get on the field in any of the Cowboys' defensive packages this season but was a solid special teams player. He wasn't considered a reach when the Cowboys drafted him 19th overall two years ago, so some 4-3 teams might be interested.

Spears isn't a bad player, but he hasn't lived up to his first-round billing. To use a Tuna term, he's J.A.G. If the Cowboys get rid of Spears, Jay Ratliff could take his job, with Jason Ferguson and Tank Johnson forming a good NT tandem.

Time to give Jerry some advice: What would you want for Spears or Carpenter? I'm not sure the return for either would be more than a second-day pick, so try to be realistic.

If we're shopping Spears I hope we are able to replace him.

He may not be that great but he is not that bad either and thats a position we can't afford to get thin at.

Wow, so now they're getting their reports from message boards. That's fantastic.

I may have heard the board part wrong...that did seem like a strange this to say for them. I'm at work and was not giving it my full attention. Just clearly heard "Cowboys shopping a pair of former 1st round picks...BC and MS"

very smart, they are still young and very tradeable contracts. neither seems like a good fit in our system so its time to get whatever they are worth while we have a chance. stings that they are both former 1sts. one thing is that we better get value back for them.

Let's call Big Bill.

They're two of 'his guys', right?

He's taking everything else he can from this team, so the more the merrier, right?

The idea that Carpenter doesn't fit a 3-4 defense is silly. He's a perfect fit for a 3-4 defense. He's fast and he's big. That's what you need in a 3-4 ILB. His problem is just that he's not that good, which doesn't make him a good fit for any pro defense.

Spears is worthless in my eyes. And Carpenter, well. Thank God Parcells is in Miami because I have no idea how he thought this kid would work in the 3-4.

Pretty sad.

Two very recent first-round picks being shopped and possibly only second-day picks in return.

selling carpenter now seems crazy. He couldnt be worth any less than he is now, he needs his quad fixed and he never played a snap in the regular defense.

Spears wasnt bad this year, maybe they feel like the combo of bowen, hatcher, ratliff can cover that, plus probably a draft pick on the line.

If I remember correctly spears has 2 more years left on his deal so it is as good a time as any to trade him.

What do you really get for trading players at this time of the year?

If that's what we would get, then I'd be pretty upset. They're worth more as depth than as 2nd day picks. Buy high, sell low. Great strategy.

I tottally agree unless its to sweetin a deal to get another player like Roy Williams or something.

Other than that i'd rather just keep them.
