If we're shopping Spears I hope we are able to replace him.

He may not be that great but he is not that bad either and thats a position we can't afford to get thin at.

Maybe if Fergy comes back and we have Tank still signed we may try and move Ratliff to the weakside DE position along side Ware. Jay probably is more athletic than Spears so that could be a better tandem.

If we lose Carpenter and reeves this offseason and then possibly davis, our already bad special teams might be completely horrid next year.

Wow. Shopping Carpenter is one thing, but who is going to replace Spears? Hatcher has the ability to make some explosive plays, but sometimes he gets out of position or just flat out vanishes.

Maybe with Tank and Ferguson coming back, they might move Ratliff back to defensive end. If they let Spears go, then I bet the rumor of Bowman leaving won't be so true anymore.

I don't know how anyone could have thought a 6'4" 250 lbs. linebacker who spotted at DE in college could have ever fit in the 3-4.

I've been optimistic that Carpenter would make a run at Ayodele's spot next season. And I think Spears is one of the more under-appreciated guys on the team. He can flat out stop the run, and every team needs those guys.

Now, if the right deal came along, I could see moving them. But I wouldn't just give them away.

I actually think Carpenter could look good in Detroit, and that might even allow me to continue my Roy Williams dreams. But Spears seems tailor-made to be a run stopping DE in a 3-4.

Trade rumors swirling about Carpenter, Spears

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Rumor has it that the Cowboys are shopping former first-round picks DE Marcus Spears and LB Bobby Carpenter at the Senior Bowl.

Carpenter simply isn't a fit in a 3-4 defense, which makes Bill Parcells' decision to pick him pretty puzzling. Carpenter couldn't get on the field in any of the Cowboys' defensive packages this season but was a solid special teams player. He wasn't considered a reach when the Cowboys drafted him 19th overall two years ago, so some 4-3 teams might be interested.

Spears isn't a bad player, but he hasn't lived up to his first-round billing. To use a Tuna term, he's J.A.G. If the Cowboys get rid of Spears, Jay Ratliff could take his job, with Jason Ferguson and Tank Johnson forming a good NT tandem.

Time to give Jerry some advice: What would you want for Spears or Carpenter? I'm not sure the return for either would be more than a second-day pick, so try to be realistic.

Interesting stuff but not at all surprising. Maybe they can be packaged in a deal for a pick or included in a deal for a player reducing the value of the pick Dallas would have to relinquish.

This offseason should be interesting. Glad to hear that Jerry isn't falling into the Pat Riley syndrome and is fooled into thinking that what he has is good enough without upgrades.

I just don't know how bad Carp's quad is if he can run down and make tackles on special teams. I think his real problem is toughness. He's just not physical enough and never has been since he got here.

I'm not sure about his attitude, either.

And Spears is JAG. You can bet the plan is to start Ratliff in his place and let Fergy and Tank play NT... Just like Timmy said.

And just because we're shopping them doesn't mean we're having a fire sale. If no one offers what we think they're worth, we can keep them. (Although I truly don't think either is going to contribute much going forward.)

Wow, so now they're getting their reports from message boards. That's fantastic.
Wrong board whichever it is.

Not saying it's impossible but it just seems a little too "fan hope" contrived to me.

That's why I don't want to lose Keith.

You mean like DeMarcus Ware the 6'4 252lbs Perdue DE who now plays OLB for the Dallas Cowboys? ;)

The idea that Carpenter doesn't fit a 3-4 defense is silly. He's a perfect fit for a 3-4 defense. He's fast and he's big. That's what you need in a 3-4 ILB. His problem is just that he's not that good, which doesn't make him a good fit for any pro defense.

:lmao2:

Nice one.

Spears has become the dog you kick when you're angry. There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a player who has started practically every game since he came into the league for three years with a pick in the 20's. There just so happens to be a logjam at his position making him available, since Wade has made it frequently known that he would like Ratliff to be the strongside DE starter. I don't think the Cowboys would have to sell low on him.

Carpenter is another story. You probably are selling low on him, but he is one expensive backup and special teamer. You could probably get the same production for a fraction of the salary from Justin Rogers.
