1310 Ticket Ticker: Carpenter and Spears being shopped at Senior Bowl

Everytime I start to question Parcells' legacy here in big D, I'm reminded of JJ and Carpenter...Genius moves by Bill

But he couldn't get on the field because he wasn't any good in practice. He wasn't even any good in the real games he got in before he got yanked.

I even remember Parcells saying, "His problem isn't athletic ability, I'll tell you that." Well, if it's not that, there are only a few other things it could be. That he's dumb and blows assignments? Nope, he's pretty smart. That he's lazy? No, he supposedly works and lifts hard. That's why I think it's toughness.

Who knows, maybe we keep him and he supplants Akin. That would be the best situation. But I don't see it. Wade got Courtney Brown on the field more than Carp, for crying out loud.
Bingo. Go and look at him in pre-season on defense or even on special teams. I can't remember one time where he takes on a blocker. He's more interested in going around the blocker. He's not physical.
I had high hopes for him, and after the Seattle playoff game I thought it might happen for him, but we are going on year 3 and he hasn't contributed in the regular defense. Not good for a first rounder.

Trade rumors swirling about Carpenter, Spears

Rumor has it that the Cowboys are shopping former first-round picks DE Marcus Spears and LB Bobby Carpenter at the Senior Bowl.

Carpenter simply isn't a fit in a 3-4 defense, which makes Bill Parcells' decision to pick him pretty puzzling. Carpenter couldn't get on the field in any of the Cowboys' defensive packages this season but was a solid special teams player. He wasn't considered a reach when the Cowboys drafted him 19th overall two years ago, so some 4-3 teams might be interested.

Spears isn't a bad player, but he hasn't lived up to his first-round billing. To use a Tuna term, he's J.A.G. If the Cowboys get rid of Spears, Jay Ratliff could take his job, with Jason Ferguson and Tank Johnson forming a good NT tandem.

Time to give Jerry some advice: What would you want for Spears or Carpenter? I'm not sure the return for either would be more than a second-day pick, so try to be realistic.

What are the chances of Spears/Carpenter ending up in Miami? Not sure if Miami runs the 3-4, or if they don't, are they going to convert to the 3-4,but both Spears and Carp suffered in the 3-4 after coming out of a 4-3 system in college.

they probably will make the switch, if they haven't already, BP is in charge now

but I'm pretty sure that they ran the 3-4 2 years ago, not sure about this year

Spears has to be included in that since he was the player Dallas drafted with the pick they gained by trading out of the 1st to get Julius.

Disclaimer: I have no issues with Spears. I think he has been solid and will continue to be that for the rest of his career.

Perhaps you should look to Ware, Canty, Ratliff, Romo, Columbo, Barber, Witten, James, and Newman instead.

We traded off Scott Shanle for beans but he has been a starter in N.O. I would not put it past Carpenter to end up having a solid career elsewhere but it will need to be in a position where he isn't asked to take on blockers as he isn't very strong. He is quick and has good size/speed ratio thus the first round pick.

If we could get a 3rd for him I'd take it, but nothing less than that.

Maybe Nawlins will give us a 1st for Bobby:laugh2:

Yeah, I'm sure Parcells is just drooling at the thought of getting ahold of some underachievers that he watched suck in person for an entire year. Especially one that bad mouthed him as soon as he left and said he hated playing in his defense.

Crayton too

throw in Jacque Reeves as well, yes, he's horrible as a starter, even as a #3 guy, but he was a 7th round pick

If we're shopping Spears I hope we are able to replace him.

He may not be that great but he is not that bad either and thats a position we can't afford to get thin at.

as much as you post and i would hope you would already see what is happening. jason will be back next season along with tank to play the nose. as well as jay played the nose this year, you could see our run d suffering late in the season. jay is good in spurts at the nose but and the end position in the 3-4 he is perfect. bowen showed is more than adequate as a reserve end. we should also pick someone up later in the draft to compete.

Give those 2 and one of the first round pics for the dolphins #1 overall. That way the fins essentially have 3 first round pics.

Spears is WAY more valuable to this team then a 2nd day pick. I know most are down on him, just because he's not always showing up on the stat sheet everyweek. But the stats as we all know don't always tell the truth.

He's a huge part of our run defense. Unless he's moved in a deal for another starter, then it's a mistake.

It's the time of the year almost, where draft picks become gold - but if we trade him for anything lower than a high 2nd, then it's a waste. IMO

Parcells was hired in 2003, same year Newman was drafted and CB was a glaring need...Hard to give credit to Parcells for a no brainer pick...Then again, Trufant didn't fare too badly either from that draft, did he, and he was picked several slots lower?...It simply underscores how poor Bill was with high picks, in general, and fared better with 2nd day picks

you're right, BP sucked evaluating talent

I am one of the few that wants to keep Fergy and move Ratliff to DE........ The problem is going to be who will take Spears or Carp? Both 1st round picks have pretty decent cash coming there way in the next few years.

The idea that Carpenter doesn't fit a 3-4 defense is silly. He's a perfect fit for a 3-4 defense. He's fast and he's big. That's what you need in a 3-4 ILB. His problem is just that he's not that good, which doesn't make him a good fit for any pro defense.

He certainly seems like he should be a good fit. The size and speed you want with college experience rushing the passer.

He just seems incredibly passive to me. No fire. Doesn't look a thing like the player he was in college.

Unless you can get something that is concrete in terms of helping the team, I would be hesitant to trade either, simply because we've been very lucky in terms of health at those two positions.

What happens if Canty or Ratliff go down? Or if Fergy goes down again (as he is old) and Ratliff has to move back to NT? Line and LB depth are critical to the 3-4.

I think with Carpenter, his biggest problem is taking on blocks or attacking blockers. I think that is why he hasn't been getting the PT. Hopefully this year he can do something, he showed promise at the end of his rookie year.
