2008 Cap Update - $6,270,045 million under (10/23/08) *Post #195

When I posted that draft pick breakdown, I was using the pick numbers posted by someone on another message board. I just checked the official draft order, and we actually would have Nos. 22, 28, 61 (not 58), 92 (not 91), 125, 164 (not 162), 169 and 236.

So three of our picks will be slightly lower than what I posted -- and will be slightly cheaper as well.

Here are the corrected numbers for last year --

22 = $1.147 million
28 = $1.02 million
61 = $480,000
92 = $442,750
125 = $388,620
164 = $324,730
169 = $321,690
236 = $295,000

And the corrected estimations for this year (5 percent increase over last year) --

22 = $1.205 million
28 = $1.07 million
61 = $504,000
92 = $465,000
125 = $408,000
164 = $341,000
169 = $331,750
236 = $309,750

And the corrected cap impacts --

22 -- $1.205 million - $370,000 = $835,000
28 -- $1.07 million - $370,000 = $700,000
61 -- $504,000 - $370,000 = $134,000
92 -- $465,000 - $370,000 = $95,000
125 -- $408,000 - $370,000 = $38,000
162 -- $341,000 - $295,000 = $46,000
169 -- $331,750 - $295,000 = $36,750
236 -- $309,750 - $295,000 = $14,750

That adds up to $1,899,500. Add the $125,000 cushion to be safe and another $125,000 for UDFAs (also probably higher than necessary), and the total cap impact is $2,149,500.

The average value of their contracts is irrelevant. What matters is their cap number this year. And because of the Rule of 51, the cap room we need to sign all of our rookies is far less than their combined cap numbers for this year.

Right now, our picks in the first three rounds are Nos. 22, 28, 58 and 91. After the comp picks are awarded, our picks in the last four rounds should be Nos. 125, 162, 169 and 236.

These were the cap numbers for those picks last year --

22 = $1.147 million
28 = $1.02 million
58 = $495,000
91 = $443,500
125 = $388,620
162 = $325,550
169 = $321,690
236 = $295,000

The rookie pool goes up 5 percent this year, so on average, draft picks should have a cap number 5 percent higher than the player at the same pick last year.

Here's the approximate cap numbers for those picks this year --

22 = $1.205 million
28 = $1.07 million
58 = $520,000
91 = $465,500
125 = $408,000
162 = $341,800
169 = $331,750
236 = $309,750

The Rule of 51 says that the only base salaries that count in the offseason are those for the players with the 51-highest cap numbers on the team. Right now, only the first five picks would make our top 51. They'd each bump out a player with a base salary of $370,000. So when we sign one of them, they'd start counting against our cap, but another player's $370,000 base salary would stop counting. When we sign our last three picks, their base salaries ($295,000 each) won't count against the cap -- only their bonus proration will.

So here's the approximate net cap impact of each draft pick --

22 -- $1.205 million - $370,000 = $835,000
28 -- $1.07 million - $370,000 = $700,000
58 -- $520,000 - $370,000 = $150,000
91 -- $465,500 - $370,000 = $95,500
125 -- $408,000 - $370,000 = $38,000
162 -- $341,800 - $295,000 = $46,800
169 -- $331,750 - $295,000 = $36,750
236 -- $309,750 - $295,000 = $14,750

Each undrafted rookie will count against the cap in the same manner as the late-round draft picks -- their prorated bonus will count against the cap, but their base salary will not because they won't be in our top 51.

The combined cap impact of the eight draft picks as listed above is $1,916,800. But those numbers (particularly for the first two or three picks) could be higher, if we have room in our rookie pool. So we'll add $125,000 just to be safe, which brings the total to $2,041,800. We typically spend between $80,000 and $120,000 of our rookie pool on undrafted free agents. We'll play it safe and say they'll count $125,000, which brings the total to $2,166,800. That's a little less than the $2.2 million total I said we'd probably need to sign all of our rookies, and that's even with adding a little bit extra to be safe.

Thank you. That's very helpful. Where do you get all this great info and can the rest of us have access? :bow:

Adam could tell you, but then we'd have to kill you... as a result, he's kinda reluctant to share...

Of course, he could always initiate you into the secret society of capologists, but I'm told they've run out of virgins to sacrifice... :D

Seriously, Adam does seem to know some people who have access to the good info, but he prefers to keep who they are to himself... which is fine, since the info he gets is gold...

Of course, Adam then has to be smart enough to understand and process all the info he gets... we all benefit because he is... I've learned a lot from him, but still don't know half of what he does... he has made me a more knowledgeable fan...

His info is phenomenal, and to keep it all straight is nothing short of amazing.

All along I only thought Adam did this stuff on the Boys, but I know he helps the Skins cap expert out some, and I found out that he posts about all other teams on KFFL. He is a freaking genius!

I tried piecing together an approximation of our cap using various sources. I got to a point where I estimated about 5.5 million in cap space....compared to Adam's numbers of 3.9m or so, and I felt pretty darn good about it. But there is so much going on. One thing I know I miss out on and can't seem to get a good answer on is the workout bonus for most players and there are a few contracts I can't find anything on. Terry Glenn's is specifically hard to figure.

Quick update (3/18/08) -- Flozell Adams' contract went through without the $100,000 workout bonuses each season. So his cap number right now is only $3,166,666 instead of $3,266,666. And that means we are $3,982,787 million under the cap.

:starspin You, sir, are a genius. :starspin

Adam--many thanks for the info and also forbreaking it down where us ordinary fans can understand :bow: :bow:

Quick update (4/15/08) -- The NFL has recalculated the cap value of Flozell Adams' deferred signing bonus, reducing the hit by $68,724 per season. We're now $4,051,511 under the cap.

Thank you for the knowledge.

So, say we trade our 28 for Roy Williams, trade for PacMan, and sign our rookies. Would we go into this upcoming season with mere pennies under the cap?

I would imagine it would put us close but then there are probably other guys who could be restructured, or possibly even resigned to longer deals that would reduce their cap numbers, giving the boys a little more wiggle room.

Looks like we are right at the top of the CAP now.
With the two first rounders.

This gives me even more thoughts that we will trade one of the number one picks to move down to the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Also - we will have to cut / restructure some contracts.
At this point I do not think - we could afford a long term Barber or Canty deal as it would hamper us greatly - not this year maybe but next year.
Even with the tendered numbers and the level going down.

With the dead money of over 6mil for this year.
Are we heading in the Commanders direction...Trying to stay on top with the current players and resigning them?

hey adam.. what does the trade of akin and fasano do to our cap number?

Update (4/26/08) -- With the offseason workout program under way, the standard workout bonus ($6,720) has started counting against the cap for the 60 eligible players who didn't have a different amount written into their contract. That means we're now $3,648,311 under the cap BEFORE accounting for the Fasano-Ayodele trade or the Adam Jones trade.

The Fasano-Ayodele trade should cost us $69,060 of cap room, plus any workout bonus that either of them earned already this offseason. I'll update that when the final numbers come in, as I will after the Jones trade becomes official (if it does).

JJ is going to have to work his magic to get everyone signed with that little of money.
I hope they can get some guys to restructure their contracts to help out. I heard something about Romo doing that. A situation where they give him a signing bonus and then spreading out the cap hit over the life on the contract.
Isn't that how Indy was able to afford the highest paid QB, DE, and TE?

Everyone who? We already have enough cap room to sign everyone who is on the team. If we had traded for someone such as Roy Williams or Anquan Boldin, we might have needed to get more cap room. But unless Adam Jones' deal is for more than expected, we're fine for now.

Adam, how much will the Fasano-Ayodele trade save us in cap space next year?

I'm confused here. Why isn't the Jones trade already official? The Titans already spent our 4th round draft choice. Its not like the trade can be undone now.

I posted that two days ago (early Saturday morning), before it was official. I'll get his contract numbers probably tomorrow.

It saves us $4,567,500 of cap room for 2009.
