Gerry Fraley made note of Philadelphia's trade for Detroit linebacker Ernie Sims earlier today. In a division with Kevin Boss, Chris Cooley and Jason Witten, defenses have to be able to cover tight ends and the Eagles have struggled in that department.
Especially against Witten.
In 13 games against the Eagles, Witten has 76 catches for 911 yards and four touchdowns. He has had three 100-yard games against Philadelphia.
Now Philly will look to Sims at least some in 2010 to contain Witten.
Hopefully the Eagles do not look at the film the last time Sims had at least some responsibility on Witten. It came in 2007 at Ford Field with Sims a starter for the Lions. All Witten did was catch 15 passes for 138 yards, at the time career highs, and bring down the game-winning touchdown pass with 18 seconds to play in the Cowboys' NFC East-clinching win against the Lions.
A quick scan of the boxscore had Sims bringing down Witten six times after catches. Now, he was credited with forcing a fumble at the goal-line in the fourth quarter on Witten, but he appeared to struggle on the winning TD pass.
