looking at the bright-side, he's a BC lineman, and they seem to generally do well in the NFL, and he moves really well for a man who stands nearly 6'8"

I agree, when I saw Boston college and OL.......I felt ok.

Flozell is a FA after this year, and Colombo is a UDFA the year after. OT was more of a need than WR, but since OT's don't matter in Madden and fantasy football I can see why people are disappointed.

In what way is he an upgrade over proctor, mcQ, Kozier, or any of our olineman. Don't even say upside because all the reports say that mcQ and proctor have tremendous upside.

Reports are that if you draft boston college offensive linemen that you cant go wrong, that they turn out pro offensive linemen from boston college, best i remember 12 guys are playing from boston college in the offensive line.

I'm not sure if I like the pick. I think we could have got better.

But BC and offensive linemen usually go well with the NFL.

And if we had drafted WR in what way would we improve over what we have in Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd and Miles Austin. Dont even say upside because all the reports say that Hurt and Austin have tremendous upside.

Crayton is one of the best #3 WR's in the league. Bowe or Meachem would have been our #4 WR next year. Any WR in the 2nd round might have been our #5. Any WR drafted in the 3rd round is fighting to make the roster.

:banghead:

Actually....I haven't, but I haven't researched anyways. What were the character issues?

I think any number of the wr's available when we were first there in teh 2nd round are better and faster than crayton. but actually I was think NT or cornerback for the pick not an ot who is going to be the backup to our backups. :banghead:

I would have preferred that we stay at #53 and take C Ryan Kalil (Carolina took him at #59) as we have no depth at the position and Kalil can also play OG.

Oh well.
Thumper the guys on The Ticket said he was smaller than the Cowboys liked.

I went back and looked at my senior bowl practice notes. I don't remember being especially high on Marten at the time but when I read the one on one notes, he held his own against Carriker and stonewalled Spencer for the most part.

Yes, Mayock mentioned that he excelled in the "postseason"...

I think I understand how you feel. Those OL out of the first two rounds aren't glamorous. You have to grab 2-3 few guys like this every year. I think the price of FAs is too steep to keep your ballclub on top if you don't.

I'm sorry, but I am having a difficult time buying the" Oh, this guy played for BC and they usually do a good job with O'linemen so this is a good pick." Does anyone other than me see the humor in this? All reports that I have read say that this guy has good technique and strength but is severly limited in athletic ability. I fail to see how he can help our team especially going against NFL grade pass rushes. Is this the second coming of Petitti? Honestly, please someone feel me in.

Position Specific Traits

TraitComments
Movement/Space Easily exposed in space. Struggles to reach and initiate contact at the second level. Lacks adequate balance.

Pass Blocking Will be a liability as a left tackle in the NFL. Does a good job of initiating contact an effective punch and riding defenders outside the pocket. Lacks the foot speed and flexibility to match up against above-average pass rushers. Sluggish out of his stance. Stiff hips.

Quickness Heavy ankles, but has adequate lateral movement. Has quick, active hands, though.

Run Blocking Good technician and position blocker. Lacks explosiveness and does not dominate at the point of attack.

Strength Solid all-around strength, but he lacks the explosiveness and power to make up his athletic deficiencies. Has the strong hands to lock and sustain his blocks.

Technique Takes good angles, initiates contact and positions himself well. Keeps his hands inside the shoulders and keeps his legs moving. Bends at the knees and overextends too often. Struggles to sink his hips low and maintain a flat back.

General Comments:
Although Marten had a strong senior season for the Boston College Eagles, his minimal athletic ability cannot be masked by good technique at the next level. If he can improve his lower body strength and add weight, Marten might have a future as a right tackle, but he'll likely start his career as a backup. Has some versatility, having played guard in the past, but doesn't project to be a starter at that position either.

Projected Round:

5th

In theory this is fine but, let's all remember, that people defended Al Johnson, people defended Peterman, people defended the 2nd rounder tackle from USC who shall not be named.

I am not defending this guy yet. I will wait.

Who is this guy and why did we draft another freakin tackle?

Who knows. The only way this guy starts is if we lose someone to injury.
