In theory this is fine but, let's all remember, that people defended Al Johnson, people defended Peterman, people defended the 2nd rounder tackle from USC who shall not be named.

I am not defending this guy yet. I will wait.

it's true, we haven't been good at getting lineman

but it is obviously a necessary position to address (unlike TE); just a matter of if the guy can play or not

everything about the draft is 'in theory' though, if you think about it

I don't mind that part of the strategy -- the general idea of getting versatile OL. It's the smaller and bigger views that I'm not yet buying into: on the smaller scale, I'm not at all sold on this particular player and on the larger scale, I'm not at all sold on the idea of trading down to get more 4th rounders because, among other things, we're doing this in the 3rd round.

There isn't much way for us to get the feel of draft picks like this. We know about the first rounders. Since so many people rate them highly we feel safe. In fact they aren't safe but they are safer than most positions in the first. The vast majority of us are dependent on our team making a good pick on these non-glitter guys out of the top rounds. We'll have to wait and see if Marten pans out. Hopefully we won't know this year. He likely won't get to play much unless there is an injury. He's very unlikely to push a starter out of a job this year.
