Losing one of the top offensive coordinators in the league is a cause of concern, not a reason to be excited. The season before, KM was ranked as the #2 offensive coordinator in the entire NFL by PFF. I simply do not believe MM is an upgrade.

When I think it out about this upcoming Dallas Cowboys 2023 season, I was compelled to think of 5 Reasons to be EXCITED about this season, while also having 5 reasons to be concerned about the Cowboys seasons. This is how I see it:

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED

1 McCarthy/Schottenhemier play calling vs Kellen Moore

2 Addition of WR Brandin Cooks/CB Stephen Gilmore

3 Big DTs (Hankins, Massi)

4 Pollard now starter and Involving RBs in pass game

5 Development of key young players (ala Sam Williams, Izzy Makamu. Mazzi, Clark)

FIVE REASONS TO BE CONCERNED

1 Dak adjusting to new Tex- Coast offense

2 FG kicker

3 Linebackers

4 OL changes

5 Tight Ends
Not sure I would list McCarthy/Schottenheimer vs Kellen Moore as one of the reasons to be excited for 2023. McCarthy was removed as play caller in Green Bay in 2015. It remains to be seen if we’re going to be excited about the change in OC. It won’t take long for fans to turn against McCarthy/Schottenheimer if things don’t go well early. Cowboys fans are as fickle as they come. It was a complete lovefest for Kellen Moore early on, but it didn’t take long to turn into a bash fest.

How does Pollard give you goose bumps for starting...when he never has ever in his NCAA/NFL career?

I suppose it's "exciting"...but it's also a huge question mark. Not sure how it can be ANY other way. Set me straight why it's so exciting and confident to you.

McCarthy got removed from his own team? Wasn;t he the HEAD COACH? WHo "removed" him?

Your number one reason to be concerned. Should be the number one positive. That’s his rookie offense running again.
Oh look....this guy ain;t concerned one bit about Dak. I'm gonna feint from being NOT surprised at win telling other people how greatly fantastical Dak is and don;t worry.

I’m wondering why #1 under ‘most excited’ is not in the the other category as a reason for concern. Opponents might take a couple/few weeks to adjust, but they will adjust.

The Cowboys just said goodbye to a coach that had them ranking very high offensively. A guy who was unemployed for less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee.

Five Reasons to be Excited:

1) McCarthy/Schott will “ hopefully” mean much more creative ways to involve and design-scheme the RBs in both the pass game and run game … involve and scheme
much more “ Misdirection “ into the play calling. We should be more “ All Purpose” utilization with our RBs than what departed Kellen Moore offered.

2) Cooks will instantly bring plus speed in the offense, that’s’ gonna open paths up for Lamb, and Cooks will provide much over the top of defense plays.
He has long been one of the premiere speed WRs in NFL. CB Gilmore (Pre-ACL injury) was once NFL Defensive Player-Year.
He'll provide very solid coverage and INT skills and won't surrender big plays the way Anthony Brown did. Both will impact pass game on both sides of the ball.

3) Big DTs- if early on, Mazzi is everything he is advertised to be along with vet Hankins, we should have a Snack Harrison/Hankins type duo in Big D”. DTs that change
how teams have to alter how they try to run ball. Goal line/short yd. In interior team could no longer “ Out-Physical “ us.

4) Pollard is one of the most explosive players in entire NFL. Some fans will continue to underappreciate this, but coaches need to maximize his All Purpose skill set.
Both run/pass. Something Kellen Moore could not do so frequently. Ditto for backups too

5) Williams could be a 10+ sack guy. Could he overtake Armstrong as new starter ? Ditto with Izzy vs Hooker ? Clark was a LB award finalist at LSU, what about the NFL ?

Can you imagine as statistically high as we ranked offensively under Kellen Moore, we could've been that much more totally unstoppable on offense
- That much more difficult to defend... if he did not have the flaws that stymied this offense - Especially in playoffs vs Niners in back to back years..

- Those impressive offensive stats in regular season matter little if it does rear it's head in the playoffs, when all stakes are on the line. When do all or go home ..
And both times vs Niners. this Kellen high powered offense just could not deliver. What happens should we play the Niners again in playoffs this year?

- As far opposing teams " adjusting " to our offense.. . That's why as a coaching staff, you have to be able to make " in-game " adjustments to counter-scheme
the adjustments of opposing teams. Your ability to adjust on the move has to be better than theirs - seasons and playoffs are won and lost on such asjustments.
That's why this is Chess,...

(5)Excited in order: Quinn, Parsons, Tyler Smith, Cooks and Gilmore.

(5)Concerned in order: Dak's decision making, McCarthy's play calling, kicker, Tyron Smith's health, no big running back.

I am not excited about Pollard being the starting RB, and no RB behind him being proven to be the RB when Pollard gets injured.

My #1 concern. This year is a bit of a reset on offence. Defence is very hopeful, and we may need another year to lean on them.

When MM came to the Cowboys we had the pandemic year. He was saddled with Moore, and he went with the flow.

Now he has decided with the Jones' to play a bigger role on the offensive side of the ball, and this feels like all the marbles are riding on the roll of the dice with him and Schottenheimer.

This 2023 year may not be as efficient on offence as everyone is getting used to each other, and defences are primed to test Dallas' running ability...again.

We may have lost a year of MM's version of the Cowboys offence, and MM has very little runway left to make this team gel for a decent playoff run.

If we get a 8-9 in MM's first year as coordinator will we be seeking a new HC and spinning the turnstile again?

Agree completely…I just don’t view McCarthy as that great chess player that will more more often than he loses

The same way ' goose bumps ' to the entire NFL when Pollard was named as a Pro Bowler among his fellow peers

FIVE REASONS TO BE CONCERNED:

1) DAK Dak will be learning a different offense – its assumed it is gonna be West Coast oriented. It’s gonna be a matter of passing to a body of a target than passing to an anticipated spot before a target breaks in-out of a route.

Dunno how much will coaches change between Kellen’s rhythm time based version vs McCarthy/Schott WC version. I’ve only heard and assume “ option-routes” will be much more limited or eliminated. I expect the RBs will be given a great deal more play in the pass game in underneath routes that will help the QB in the short pass game. Schott was an consultant in '22.
but dunno how much time he was upfront with the actual players.

2) FG kicker -We’ve had the usual FG kicker issue problematic ever since Chan Bailey went on the quick decline. It remains a cross your fingers who’ll be solution wait. Seasons. Division titles and playoff games are won and lost off game deciding FG kicks and play of the kicker.

3) Linebackers – we have a lot of youthful inexperience here. Clark, Overshown, Harper, (Cox?) LVE only vet LB, and what if he gets injured and out again ? Some have dismiss this concern per our Hybrid safeties, but we need LBs that take on TES, FBs and even OL vs run ,..especially in goal line/short yd. I don’t expect another Barr type vet LB anytime soon. Coaches want long look at young bucks first –then decide on street FA vet LBs at near summer’s end.

4) OL changes - Per rumors, Steele at LG ? Only just recovering per ACL injury, and now hes’ gotta learn new position at LG ? Tyron has manned the LT his HOF career, but why would he need to move to and start at RT when Steele is expect to be OK ready for '23 ?

Tyler Smith is the eventual future starter at LT, but does that need to happen now since we still do have Tyron ?
Why not Tyler starting LG now (a position he trained all last summer (until Tyron got hurt in camp) and have him handy “ when” Tyron gets hurt again ? Depth situation will have to work itself out. Backup OTs ? Matt Waletzco ? .. Richards ?.. Edoga ? Is there a new challenge to Farniok as backup center ?

5) Tight Ends
We have backups in Ferguson and Hendershot who have “ flashed” some ability in spots and occasions, but it’s an unknown as a starter in either one. Schultz was a go to security blanket for Dak, in underneath, 3rd downs and red zone/goal line situations. He had the rapport and experience Dak needed as a starter. We have 3 TEs that will have to grow that rapport and experience in Ferguson, Hendershot and rookie Luke Schoon

There is only two starters from last year that will not be returning to this year's team. Schultz and Zeke.

And Pollard is already well adjusted en route to a Pro Bowl season.

LG role unknown the only two new role positions will be WR Brandin Cooks and TE Ferguson (assuming)

Good list. I think this one actually belongs on both lists, but other than that I'm with ya

"1 McCarthy/Schottenhemier play calling vs Kellen Moore"
