Owens would cost us 9 million on our cap if he is cut next year for an empty roster spot. The 600 thousand misleading figure that the cut TO people have thrown around is only the difference in his cap hit if he stays or goes.

If Ownes is cut, it will be 9 million dollars wasted on an empty roster spot. Jerry isn't getting out of the 9 million. It is NOT as if we have been lead to believe by some on here that cutting TO will only mean 600 grand cap hit. It will mean 600 grand more on top of the nearly 9 million he is getting. you cut TO and you still have to pay that money.

TO isn't going anywhere.

Edit: fixed link.

Technically it is..

Yes it's dead cap space but it's still cap space. If he truly is a distraction to the coaching staff, the quarterback, and other teammates than his release would be viewed as addition by subtraction. If the team feels spending $600,000 more to regain control of the asylum is worth it then that isn't that bad of a hit.

Plus, if released now he would be completely off the books in 2010, meaning Dallas would be able to spend all of that $9 million plus to replace him the year before we could possibly make a run at a Superbowl hosted by Dallas. He is also due a $3.1 million roster bonus in June which will drive up his cap hit in future years as well.

Exactly. It's a 680k hit, that's it.

If I give you 10 dollars and you give me four back, I haven't given you 10, I've given you six.

And we don't need to spend a ton on a replacement. We already got RW, and Miles has a lot of talent.

The question is do you want to spend 8.4 million and get some production from that playr or spend 9 mil plus the amount you spend to replace him and not have his production?

Crayton, Bennett, Jones, and Choice as well. All those guys would benefit from more balls to go around.

TO could give us another really good year - but it is always better to get rid of someone a year too soon rather than a year too late.

Now is the time to make the move as we do have considerable offensive talent to pick up the slack.

it's not a misleading figure, it's a cap hit so it would be the difference in what he would cost being here and being cut....that number is accurate.

Of course, you lose a ton of passes forced his way to try to make him happy as well.

Accurate? Yes.

A dumb way to understand the impact on our cap? Also yes.

no it isn't. there is cap space, cap hit and cap freed. if you know what each term means, you will understand the impact of cutting a player. a cap hit is exactly that, if you get rid of said player, your cap will be hit with an additional amount...i don't think it's that difficult. then again...as an engineer i was required to do lots of math that didn't involve numbers :laugh2:

We don't get the 8 mil back. He would be on the books for the 8.4 plus the 600K. That's 9 mil we can't use on another player. Some of you aren't looking at it correctly. Then we have to replace him through the draft or FA so that money would add to the 9 mil.

So we basically start 9mil in the hole.

right...you don't get money back, you lose 600k more of your cap (than if you were to keep him) and also don't have him. so instead of paying him 9 mil this year and having him play you pay 9.6 mil and don't have him on the roster.

Exactly....it's not that hard. Even someone who's highest math was stats and college algebra can understand it. :D

I don't care for him either but if we are going to be stuck with paying him that much we might as well get something out of it.
