Where I live on campus, isn't a particularly nice neighborhood. We've had a couple of problems (for instance, non-students showing up to our area, hanging around, making inappropriate comments to women, and bordering on threatening...) We call public safety and not the cops. With cops, you never know what you are going to get (maybe its just Milwaukee, I don't know...). But with public safety, you know they are going to look out for the students first. And since they pack heat and can shoot if needed, it seems safer to go that route if trouble is going down.

Another time, we had our townhouse broken into. My roommate had his computer and PS3 stolen. We called public safety first; they then called the cops. That way, we had public safety at the scene to 'protect' bec. you never know which kind of cop is going to show up. And even if the wrong kind does, they are less likely to do anything when public safety is there witnessing the whole thing.

Maybe my views on cops are jaded, but damn, if they haven't given me reason to be.

I don't disagree...Everyday, I see people who are pretty far down on the evolutionary ladder and getting them to act civil is a pretty enormous leap from reality...Still, you cannot control how people act towards you (At the risk of sounding preachy, as I do not believe in religion), you can control how you act towards others.

Society is crumbling in a lot of ways...People are less respectful both towards the law and towards others...Families are dysfunctional, left & right...Violence everywhere, etc...Change has to start somewhere

I'd 'imagine', it's pretty tough being a cop...It'd be pretty tough to have thick skin and be aware of situations and scenarios that could see you or a fellow officer get injured/killed...It's not easy work, no doubt...But just as I can't condone brutality and torture for armed forces just because they have a weapon, I can't condone excessive force from police officers because they are up against situations that lack respect...I don't believe teachers should have the ability to dole out corporal punishment for misbehaving students but I do believe in discipline for insubordination.

You are so right. But at some point an officer has to go hands on. Unfortunately when it comes to that someone might get hurt. This is going to sound bad but police officers are not paid to lose fights. They are paid to take criminals into custody.

That doesn't mean they are a racist or not I'm just saying that does having a black friend mean that you aren't racist even though you are using it as some type of justification to proove that you are not racist and the girl in the article the first thing she said wasn't my frined was in trouble but my black friend. When calling in a police report (even indirectly), especially one involving possible brutality, all the details matter.

Also, they can stop the opposite sex for . . . sex.

They get good benefits and can speed without the need to.

OK, it's dangerous. but so is it dangerous for ambulance drivers and fireifighters who don't carry guns and have to go into lawless neighborhoods.

I invite you to go down to your local Law Enforcement Agency and request a ride along on a weekend. Then come back and say how hard the job is.

They have back up? True but in some cases back up could be anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour a way.
