I was once pulled over for having a tail light out in a state far from home. After running my license, the cop came back and orderded me out of the car, told me the computer said my license was suspended and since the state I was in did not have reciprocity with my home state, I was under arrest, was going to be taken to jail and would have to post bond.
Now, my license has never been suspended a day in my life. After giving me a top to bottom search, including checking every number in my cell phone address book, the back-up cops said they had called the state police in my home state and verified that my license was in fact valid. The cop who pulled me over said he wasn't used to the way my state enters its info in the computer, so it looked to him like my license was suspended, he was sorry and I was free to go.
Bottom line: the cop feigned computer illiteracy so he could exploit the opportunity to conduct a "search incident to arrest" and check my pockets for weed or weapons. Wouldn't it have been less intrusive to call the state police in my home state before yanking me out of the car, handcuffing me and searching me from top to bottom? Cops can and do play games with the law and the facts when it is to their advantage. Beware of this trick if you are driving in a state far from home. But if it does happen, do not resist, that will only make it a hundred times worse.
