I can't believe a lot of you are already stepping up to the Kool Aid table. It's preseason. Do you honestly think the game would have ended the way it did if our starters played the entire game? They looked pretty inspired to me. I hope the doom and gloom followers find a rock to crawl under.

If players aren't inspired by the fact that they're playing for jobs, they aren't going to be inspired.

A message for Wade Phillips

By dcfanatic, August 14, 2009 2:24 am

Usually I wait to see what Wade says after a game (preseason or regular season) and then determine how I am going to approach my thoughts about his coaching performance.

And I usually wait a good 12 hours before doing so.

But not on this one.

Here's something Wade said after the game tonight, read here.
Phillips showed his frustration when asked whether the Cowboys suffered any significant injuries.

"We didn't really play hard enough to get any injuries," Phillips said.
On one hand I am glad the man didn't try to sugarcoat a very uninspired performance from his backup players.

But on the other I want to know why they didn't play hard?

Your job as the 'head coach' Wade Phillips is to make sure your football team is always prepared and always ready to play hard for sixty minutes when Sunday (you know what I mean) comes around.

So in reality you are dissing yourself here Wade.

This is your team. And if you want to get guys like me off your back then have these guys ready to at least 'play hard enough' next Friday at Cowboys Stadium when the Titans roll into Dallas.

Don't stop there either. Make sure that from here until mid February this football team is prepared and ready to play hard on Sunday!

I can take losing if you gave it your all and you just weren't good enough. But I can't take devoting a huge portion of my life to following a team that is going to half arse it when the lights come on and then have the man in charge of making sure that doesn't happen tell me it did and not say anything.

Get medieval on that arse for once in your damn life Wade Phillips!

Coach Parcells went medieval quite a bit and got uninspired performances.

Again, it is the culture and leadership. This team has shown it can be stubborn, obstinate and frankly dumb for quite some time. When the culture dictates that poor performances are met with a head shake and not a pink slip, players will not play like their job depends on it.

I don't hold Phillips completely accountable. He doesn't carry the big stick. Jerry Jones does and the players know it.

He should have been furious after that, yet all he could say is that the starters did well and he wasn't concerned. Until that changes, we are likely to see these kinds of things.

When was the last time any sort of message was sent to the team with a well-timed and shocking cut? Where is a Curvin Richards when you need one?

So I guess most people just saw the score and figured it was the Cowboys starters?

LOL. It was like the 70-80 guys on the roster. Get a freaking grip. The first team offense dismantled the Raiders on our seconnd drive and then everyone sat down. Everyone breathe.

Thank you. It is much too early for the tar and feather Wade routine.

Wade warned folks on Wed that the team didn't look ready. Should've believed him.

  • 79 active players comprise the team's roster
  • Evaluate four preseason games between now and September 4th
  • Identify which players are underperforming
  • Confirm whether those underperforming players are among the 26 which will either be waived and/or placed on the practice squad on or by September 5th
If 15% or more of those previously identified players (roughly seven or more players) are among the final 53 players, react irrationally. If not, be cool. There really isn't any reason to 'lose it' over a significant amount of players who may not either be suiting up or standing on the sideline in Tampa Bay.

This is unbelievable. Don't you guys know that there is no strategy in preseason, just evaluation? They weren't even doing what they would actually do in a real game. They were experimenting by putting guys in different situations to see how they would fare. And most of them are not starters and won't be any time soon. The first team offense marched 71 yards with every skill player touching the ball at least once on their way to a convincing touchdown. Romo looked good. Felix looked good. Barber looked good. Bennett looked good. Witten looked good. The O Line looked good. Roy showed some of that newfound chemistry with Romo. Crayton looked good on an end around. The defensive starters looked good. What more do you all want?

A preseason Lombardi trophy a.k.a. something to google and point at for all your buddies while screaming, "We won it! We won it! Hallelujah!"

I missed most of the game. I am watching it now and I obviously see a lot of rookies in there now. Is it that they really played uninspired or is it because they are just rookies with their first NFL game action?

Bingo.

Jason Williams is lost coming from low-level competition. Butler had trouble holding the edge in his first-ever game at OLB. McGee was playing his first NFL game at QB after coming from a running option offense in college (and going against Charley Frye, who has been a starter in this league).

None of these struggles were a surprise. Or shouldn't be.

As much as you knew some people would overreact, it still surprises me how much there is this morning. Come on people, it's the first preseason game of the year. We talkin' 'bout preseason. Preseason!

The backups were disappointing for sure.

Barring major injuries, this offense shoud be very fun to watch this season.

As for who won or lost, that is totally and completely irrelevant.

I sure hope we don't have folks on this website trying to draw sweeping conclusions based the road preseason game performace of backup players.

I fully agree that any lack of effort is totally inexcusable. However, some of the issues were missing players and plenty of rookies seeing their first action. When you don't know your assignment without thinking about it, sometime you appear to lack effort but are really just out of position. No escuses though.

Also Wade only blitzed a few times never put pressure on the QB. His Defensive play calling was HORRID!!!!!!!!
!
The only way to tell if young guys can handle their base assignments and man-on-man responsibilites is to not over scheme. Nearly all coach try their hardest NOT to over scheme early in the preseason. It's fun to toss is a few Blitzes (or reverses) on occasion, but that is lees the norm early on.

After the messy way last season ended, some fans crave reassurance that the team is sharp and ready to go.

Of course, no team is going to look sharp and ready to go during the first game of preseason ... unless they game plan and de-emphasize player evaluation (which would be foolish).

Well put.

Also, some here need to keep in mind that generally the worst teams do more preseason game planning (especially for home games) than the better teams. Recall that the 0-16 Lions looked great in going 4-0 in the preseason last year.

This.

Some of you are acting straight up foolish. What did everyone expect??? Jason Williams to get 5 sacks? Stephen McGee throws for 300 yards?? I mean come on step off the ledge. I'm one of the most pessimistic persons on the board but jesus its just the first game of pre-season.

I blame Wade for the uninspired way the first team played on its first series last night.

I did see something encouraging in that Crayton was all over the young guys last night.

Hopefully Crayton Witten and Romo can be the authority that this young team lacks in a head coach.

Sorry can't blame the coach here. They are pros and if they can't get up and play hard then they deserve to get cut. If Anything that's good that wade is showing some backbone. We need some accountability out there.

I agree. These guys have an opportunity of a lifetime to make an NFL roster... And they aren't excited and fired up to play? The first team players were more fired up and excited than those fighting for a spot! What more motivation do you need than playing for the Cowboys?
