A message for Wade Phillips

By dcfanatic, August 14, 2009 2:24 am

Usually I wait to see what Wade says after a game (preseason or regular season) and then determine how I am going to approach my thoughts about his coaching performance.

And I usually wait a good 12 hours before doing so.

But not on this one.

Here's something Wade said after the game tonight, read here.
Phillips showed his frustration when asked whether the Cowboys suffered any significant injuries.

"We didn't really play hard enough to get any injuries," Phillips said.
On one hand I am glad the man didn't try to sugarcoat a very uninspired performance from his backup players.

But on the other I want to know why they didn't play hard?

Your job as the 'head coach' Wade Phillips is to make sure your football team is always prepared and always ready to play hard for sixty minutes when Sunday (you know what I mean) comes around.

So in reality you are dissing yourself here Wade.

This is your team. And if you want to get guys like me off your back then have these guys ready to at least 'play hard enough' next Friday at Cowboys Stadium when the Titans roll into Dallas.

Don't stop there either. Make sure that from here until mid February this football team is prepared and ready to play hard on Sunday!

I can take losing if you gave it your all and you just weren't good enough. But I can't take devoting a huge portion of my life to following a team that is going to half arse it when the lights come on and then have the man in charge of making sure that doesn't happen tell me it did and not say anything.

Get medieval on that arse for once in your damn life Wade Phillips!

Take someone from the team last night and cut them. Just make sure it is a guy we don't need.

I think its pretty ridiculous to be comforted or alarmed by much of anything after 1 preseason game. I'm not going to say you can't see any indicators of value but there is a lot of misleading stuff too.

And count me amongst those who found it a bit refreshing that Wade was calling out the team regardless. Sure beats making excuses.

I'm relaxed. Lets get back to practice.

It's amazing reading these threads. People point to our first string and I read glowing praise for Romo, Bennett, Felix, our back-up QB, etc. They can make an instant positive analysis, even though it's pre-season. Then we look at our back-ups and excuse their poor play because, of course, it's only pre-season. Wearing those rose colored glasses is a beautiful thing.

I don't care if we win or lose in pre-season. But I do care about the product I see on the field and what our back-ups and draft picks bring to the table. Someone asked what do we expect since it's pre-season? Simple, I expect our back-ups to be competitive against their back-ups. Is that too much ask?

The reality, at least for me, is that this team is not built in any way, shape or form to handle or overcome any type of adversity. It's taken on the persona of it's HC who is really just a DC; we have no HC. Now that the heat is on, Wade wants to get tough and be critical of his team's practice habits after he's laid a foundation of complacency for the past 2 years and the results show on the field. I can't think of any other team that has a vacant DC position just because their HC is supposed to be a defensive guru. Even HC's that call their own plays hire D or O coordinators. In any event, I just think it's a telling sign when our back-ups can't seem to compete with another teams back-ups, even guys that have been around for a couple of years.

Word.

"You're fat" would have been a much more economical use of words.

Wade has almost always taken blame for when the team doesn't perform up to standard. So 'dissing himself' is something he's done before and quite a bit. Garrett on the other hand continually passes the buck. The one time I remember Wade not taking the blame was last year's Commanders game in week 4 when we only ran the ball 9 times. Garrett blamed Romo and Wade concurred, but then said that he would make sure that problem was remedied.

This is where I think Wade's 'no tackling' can be an issue because it's gotta be tough to go into a preseason game and start tackling for the first time. They probably would need to have a scrimmage beforehand.

I think Wade needs to make the camp more physical now as a 'punishment' for the lack of physicality in the Oakland game. Then if they shape up on Friday, then 'reward' them and take down the tackling.

I would agree.

Can I get a scrimmage? I saw the Eagles, Jets, Packers, Bengals, etc all scrimmaging recently.

I just think our backups should fare better than 28-3 to the Raiders backups.

Sorry can't blame the coach here. They are pros and if they can't get up and play hard then they deserve to get cut. If Anything that's good that wade is showing some backbone. We need some accountability out there.

I have to respectfully disagree. Leadership is ALWAYS important. A great leader will inspire others to perform better. It's a fact, at least in my book. I for one - put a HUGE emphasis on leadership. Just my 2 cents.

Wednesday Wade told us publicly the team looked like crap and was not ready to play based on what he saw on Tuesday.

So I would think from there the guy would give the team some kind of speech to make sure they were on their toes come Thursday.

That second half tells me this speech never happened.

:hammer:

Wade Phillips hasn't proven that he can inspire a team as a Head Coach.

There is a reason his contract hasn't been extended.

We are going to have injuries this year, so some of the guys on the field last night are going to be depended upon to pick their game up.

I agree, if leadership was over rated then the same coaches wouldnt be successful year in and year out. Without good leadership you dont have accountability.

Coaches in the league seem wishy washy with scrimmages. I personally like them and I think the more practice time you can get in on opponents without getting injured, and usually the scrimmages do avoid injuries, the better. I'm very against shortening preseason because I believe it will produce a worse product for the league in the first first month or so of the regular season. Not to mention the refs need to get back into the groove as well. So my feeling is the more practice for any team, the better they off they will be.

I absolutely think our backups were lousy. I'm concerned but not at the 'alarmed' stage and certainly not at the outraged stage either. If it happens Friday, then I certainly become alarmed. But I've been concerned about the depth in the secondary and the O-Line for quite awhile.

I thought I read that he gave them an impassioned speech after Tuesday's practice :shrugs:

No amount of motivation is going to make Courtney Brown an NFL CB, though.
