He’s as-advertised. We haven’t had space eaters like Mazi or Hankins in forever. Those guys clogging things up inside are going to let our 2nd level players make a lot of plays.

He will continue to develop as a pass rusher, but he still offers value now as someone who can just collapse the pocket. He has rare size and power and seems to have an excellent grasp on maintaining leverage and hand placement. He’s a load for any NFL Guard to anchor on 1v1.

He seems to have some nasty to him as well, love it.

Looked pretty good to me for a rookie DT 1T
Let’s see where he is to end the year
I just hope we don’t overuse him and he doesn’t hit the rookie wall in December

Yeah, to most fans, being good at DT looks like Aaron Donald or Chris Jones (two 3 tech’s). They want to see that with a first round DT like Mazi, when the truth is he will never look like those guys because he doesn’t have a 3T skillset. He is a 1/0 tech and what he does is completely different.

Just get ready for two things: some fans to keep harping on him not playing well, and for the defense to improve. The LB’s and DE’s will reap the rewards of Mazi being there, and still fans will say Mazi isn’t doing crap.

It is largely a thankless position, that happily makes a big influence on the defense as a whole.

It is the way…
Facts.

Wait til mazi gets his first sack. It'll be critiqued like dak ints. "It was a coverage sack" lol. But they never breakdown any other dt like that. Just wait
it was a coverage sack

the ol slipped out of his stance

he used a swim move, he cant bull rush or rip theyre going to catch on

The secondary is the reason he gets sacks because lineman cant block for more than 3 seconds

"im starting to sound like LeSean McCoy"

Bingo. The guy doing the video showed it on a bunch of reps. Mazi can have a great play and absolutely 100% do his job at a high level, and not even get a tackle because the LB got the tackle.

The ONLY issue I had with him was, as Jeff Cavanaugh pointed out perfectly, is those instances when he’s the last guy to move after the snap and he comes out high - he’s susceptible to being moved when that happens. But, EVEN THAT is correctable. He still looks like a guy trying to work his way out of being primarily a 2-Gap guy into a more complete DT. Once he gets it, he’s gonna be trouble for C/G around the league…kid is ALREADY SOOOOO DAMN STRONG!!!!!

If he keeps the OL from
Getting to the second level to wipe out linebackers, he’s done his job.

he doesn't show up on stat sheets. he helps all the other guys show up on stat sheets. coaches love players like this, because they demand attention and open up everybody else

I'll never understand why it took so long to finally get a DT like Mazi.

Most of us in here have been screaming for one longer than I can remember.
Right on! He drew a lot of double teams because they know what he'll do if they don't. That's the kind of guy we need at DT and haven't had for a long time!

what i saw is this

man was double teamed and stood his ground into a stalemate

THAT IS WHAT YOURE LOOKING FOR AT DT!

if hes double teamed and he doenst do anything but stalemate he won...now its 3 offensive linemen vs Lawrence, Osi, Williams, and Parsons

I dont need that man to register ANY numbers just stalemate your double team and let our guys cook
Exactly he took up space and we also saw some athletic bounce to help make a play. The stat sheet only tells part of the story as his job is to occupy blockers so its unlikely to see more than a few sacks from his position.

Plus the reality is hes not likely to be the guy other teams choose to double team and hell likely start the season as the rotational guy with Hank.

The power is obviously there.
I hope he learns to use his hands like Hankins.
I loved the play where he tosses the G to the ground and makes the tackle. Unfairly, that’s kinda what I expect to see a lot of from him if he gets singled.
I want to see him get quicker off the snap. That was one of my biggest critiques of him on his college tape. I also would like to see him find the ball better. I hope Hankins is a good mentor as if Smith can play with as much skill as Hankins combined with Mazi’s raw physical ability, that would be quite a player.
Not a bad start, he still has a ways to go.

Smith looks reeeeeaaaaallllly strong. He is a big man and a big upgrade at the DT position. It’s been a weak link for years. Now they have a guy that will dominate space and keep the LBs clean. That’s not going to show in the stat book.

its gonna be the whole year and thread after thread about him being a bust

"we drafted a guy who eats up blockers" "he supposed to be aaron donald" "waste of a pick"

any good defense has a player who eats up blocks....if he does that hes worth his weight in gold
Hes gotta do more than eat up blockers. Sorry, thats just the simple truth. He has to make plays as a first round pick.

shooting the gap, creating havoc, TFL’s, fumbles, some sacks, whatever.
