The Patriots moved as quickly as the police this morning.

The team just announced via Twitter that it released tight end Aaron Hernandez, shortly after he was led out of his house in handcuffs.

While there will be salary cap ramifications of this one from the contract extension they rewarded him with, the high ground was apparently worth it. The notion of the “Patriot Way” was routinely mocked in the wake of this investigation, and they apparently opted to not wait http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/06/26/patriots-release-aaron-hernandez/

How soon before we start getting linked to this guy?

Whoa!

Gotta believe this goes way beyond an obstruction of justice thing...

I give the Pats credit for moving so quickly.

Jake Ballard and Tim Tebow starting the season as the TE's... ;)

Patriots call decision to cut Hernandez "simply the right thing to do" http://wp.me/p14QSB-9cFk
Patriots dump Aaron Hernandez
The Patriots have released tight end Aaron Hernandez, roughly 90 minutes after he was arrested on a charge that has not yet been identified.

“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss,” the Patriots announced. “Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”

The move prevents the Patriots from ever recovering a penny of the $12.5 million signing bonus from his 2012 contract extension worth a total of $39 million. It remains to be seen whether the Patriots will try to avoid paying $3.25 million in a deferred payment due on March 31, 2014, and whether they’ll try to wipe out base-salary guaranteed of $1.323 million in 2013 and $1.137 million in 2014.

I respect the Patriots though. They released him within an hour of his arrest before he's even been convicted of murder.

A Cowboys player kills a teammate, and he's on the sidelines smiling the following week.

TE situation in NE went from the best in the league to potentially nobody.

They have seven TE's on the roster currently. I'm not confident Gronk will be anywhere near the player he has been with so many back/forearm surgeries.

how did it get worse, they now have Jesus lining up in the strong side and Tebow lining up on the weakside, they got it covered!!!...lol

I've already had two NFL personnel people ask me "what happened to innocent until proven guilty?" Don't think teams aren't thinking about it

Innocent of what? “@beavewdh: what if Hernandez is actually innocent don't you think the pats wronged him if it turns out that way?”

What a turn of events for Aaron Hernandez. Arrested, cuffed and released by the Patriots. We haven't seen evidence but Pats have judged

I knew there would be a post about this. The situations are not even the same. The only similarity is that a person is dead, but the details are completely different. That isn't an endorsement of how the Cowboys have handled things, but I am sure the Patriots would have handled Josh Brent differently than they did Hernandez if Brent was on their team.

YEP.

At the very least soon after Jerruh should have dumped him. Got to give the Pats credit; they moved quick. Obviously got inside information that Hernandez is in this really deep.

It is interesting about team philosophies. Some GM's see a distraction and immediately crush it before it becomes a team concern and others leave it there hoping it will go away, while one other as clueless as it is actually invites it in. TO, Pacman, Brent...etc..

:Lawyer Harvey Steinberg on NFL Network says he thinks it's unlikely police would have proceeded this way for obstruction of justice charge
Harvey Steinberg: 'If it's obstruction charge, you take a sigh of relief and say, 'We can deal with this.'
In terms of Patriots attempting possible recovery of Aaron Hernandez signing bonus, that will play out in due time, but likely scenario

Security for NFL teams is well connected. Know the authorities-local, state, & FBI-and have a good feel as to what's coming down.#Hernandez
