According to you, what is our most glaring need?

Our most glaring need is speed WR.
Not only is that not our most glaring need, it isn't our most glaring need on offense. See sig for answer.

Two words: Dexter McCluster

Gurode is one of the biggest centers in the NFL. He would not even be in the top 20 as a guard. Not sure he would be any better then Kosier, he is not as quick; stronger, but could not pull and move like Kosier does. Probably about a wash. And we would still need a strong center- which will be just as important later as it is now since it seems clear that there are more big DTs and NTs in the NFL each year. Gurode and Davis each should have 3-4 more top years left; Kosier is starting to get beaten down going up against those large DTs. Not only is he a FA after next year, I think he will start to decline. Colombo should be good for another 2-3 years. Our priority should be above all else to get A OT, a LT to be clear, in this years draft. Free MIGHT be the answer at LT but we do not know. He can replace Colombo at RT. Brewster is a total mystery and in all likelihood might end up at Guard. You can NEVER have enough good tackles. We found that out the hard way this year. And who can forget the Petitti/Tucker horror? We must improve in the middle of the line so to me right after getting a LT we should really try and get Pouncey, who from all appearences is about as good at G as he is at C, and is big enough to get the job done at both.

Yes it is, big dog, think about this, our offensive line, we will have Flozell, Kosier, Gurode, Davis and Columbo with youngster Free ready to plug in. Then, you have Brewster who the coaching staff liked that most likely will play OG and ROT. That fits most of our needs at offensive line, do we need to draft young offensive linemen yes.

Next, RBs, we have Felix Jones, and Choice with Barber who maybe traded. The Cowboys in another post were said to be really looking at McCluster in 2nd round. Then, think about this, where did wade come from before he came here, San Diego. Wade said in fact that he encouraged the san diego staff to draft sproles. McCluster is similar to Sproles, a great punt and kickoff returner, with some experience at WR in the slot. And a decent rb on 3rd downs. McCluster will team with Choice in arkansas razorback very well.

Our defense is pretty well set except for a young cb to replace Newman in 2 to 3 years and free safety with a safety that is explosive and can make plays. We all know how ken hamlin didnt step up till Jerry Jones got onto him one game, then he did, but tailed off after that game. Yet, we suffered some in the secondary when Hamlin was hurt calling defensive signals, but when Hamlin came back, boom, our secondary improved.

So, its not a dire need at free safety, is it a need yes, but not a dire need.

Then, when you add in the 2 top safeties will be gone by the time we draft, Berry and Thomas, then we need to draft next best available player on the board.

Now, think about this, till crayton was demoted, we were suffering on kickoff and punt returns, and we all saw how felix jones was tippy toe on kickoffs.

then, how many deep balls did our WRs catch last year, very few. How many times were teams putting 8 men in the box to stop our run and dare us to throw. Alot!

We just dont have a player at WR that can catch a deep bomb. Now, I am still hopefull for a Ogletree. I really like him. But bottom line, if we had an elite wr with deep speed that can stretch the defense, and be an excellent punt and kickoff returner, then that will really boost this team.

Then, think about this did Crayton really bust a long return last year against good teams? No, crayton if you remember or go back and look at film, he just barely missed breaking some long returns against really good teams.

Why, he doenst have breakaway speed.

Now, think about this, when our teams were really good in the 90s superbowl teams, do you remember who we had at punt and kickoff returns. Kelvin Martin who broke some big runs against the eagles in big games and kevin williams who did the same.

So, if we get a very good punt and kickoff returner that is a deep speed wr, this will lift out team to the next level.

Just like the elite wr with minnesotta percy harvin last year that broke open some games with his elite kickoff returns and punt returns and play at wr, the same can help us this year. Just like Desean Jackson helped the eagles get to the championship game in the 2008 season, an elite punt, kickoff wr will help us. Now, does that elite wr need to be a number one pick no.

Just like I said one of my pet cats last year was I said that the wr that the cowboys should have drafted last year in about the 5th round was johnny knox, and you saw how good johnny knox was.

So, to me that is our biggest need on our team. But we need other needs too.
OG/OT, FB, Free safety, NT, wr-punt/kickoff guy, kicker.

You're probably right. Assuming we can trade down in the 1st, pick up a 3rd and a 5th for example, draft Ducasse, then 3rd rounder and our 2nd rounder to move up to pick Nate Allen. It gives us a lot of flexibility with who we want.

I think that is unlikely to happen but put me down for it.

Yes it is, big dog, think about this
I have thought about it. A lot.

Not having a speed WR didn't cost us in Minnesota. Not having a good enough OL did.

The OL needs to get younger and better if we want to go further in the playoffs.

I think Cowboy Joe could be onto something. No one means that we have to use our 1st round pick to get a "glaring need". It's just something we should consider addressing. A speed WR doesn't let teams blitz us as much, which is how the Vikings beat us.

I like the idea. That doesn't mean we have to forget about the o-line either.

The Vikings didn't need to blitz us to get jailhouse break type pressure on Romo. Having that benefit, the Vikings CBs could play very tight and not worry much about double moves because there was no time for any deeper patterns to open up.

You could have put the two best WRs in the league out there against the Vikings and it wouldn't have majorly affected the outcome of that game with the way our OL blocked.

Now we could theoretically have advanced much further if we didn't run into the Vikings who were the perfect team to take advantage of our weakness with their dominant DL and otherwise mediocre defense. However, I think we will always be at risk of being near totally ineffective against any team with an upper echelon DL who is on their game.

Gurode was at best an average guard.

We need to spend two high picks on O line. Get a tackle and a guard, or better yet a combo G/C.

I agree. Kicker seems to be a pretty big hole as well. I wouldn't go draft but the team has got to do something in that department.

KR needs to be addressed at some point.

I keep seeing posts of people wanting a new FS in the 1st round, but I don't think replacing Hamlin is our most glaring need. I think we need a 3-4 DT and depth behind our o-line starters. Age is becoming a factor there and we're one injury away from disaster if Ratliff gets injured. I want to go for a DT in the 1st round. But I can also see us drafting another corner. It seems to me we have enough safeties. JMO

What is your most glaring need?

Well, CowboyMcCoy I am glad you axed.

I would say a dominant OL to shore up the line or at least to provide depth.
I was undecided between that and a blue chipmunk, er, I mean a blue chip safety.

Thanks for the post. Without posters like you and my other Zone brothers and sistahs i would go crazy during this offseason.

Let hope for better tomorrows for this team that is stocked with talent and led by coaching/owner idiots. (Though jerra remains my man crush for his enthusiasm and the way he lives and dies with the Cowboys. He be just like my crazy uncle Emil who has a good heart and good intendons but is an idiot otherwise.)

Long live Norwegia.

For the 50th year in a row - OL!

Fixed it for ya...

The game is won or lost on the O-Line. I would draft OL every year in the somewhere first 3 rounds, EVERY year!

So would you go with BPA in the first round or just cut to the chase and draft an offensive lineman? If so, what position would you draft for and who would you target?
you always go best player available instead of need. but you have the option to trade down if you are loaded at a specific position, i.e. OLB for us.

My draft day pet cat.... Golden Tate.. He could even wear Golden Richards 83..

We need better coaching on offense. We have a massive oline that can't pass protect. Romo, I believe is one of the most sacked QBs in the league. Yet our offense coaching staff doesn't think its a priority to pass protect.

Secondly, we need a offensive coordinator who has a clue on how to call plays. Get rid of that wildcat formation. Get rid of running the ball to Barber or running plays that don't work. Scrap them immediately.

Instead we need more offensive plays that generate points. Throw the long ball down the field. Throw the ball into the endzone. Let Romo win games for us. Don't be a whimp and try and protect him by running the ball.

We need a change of philosophy on offense. We need more scoring plays. We need more TDs from Romo.
