After the season is over I dont think anyone will argue on Merriman

yeah we're 4 games into the season lets change everything.... sorry bro Houston is known for Carr getting ripped every game. this had to be the first time in a long time since Carr wasnt sacked once in a game and you know it.

Yeah - it's called 'adjustments.'

David Frey, Bethlehem, Pa.: I was wondering when are we going to see DeMarcus Ware get turned loose. It seems like he is handcuffed, not free to roam like a Shawne Merriman or L.T. I thought he was brought here to sack the quarterback, not be out on coverage?

Mickey: Well, that's a good observation on your part. Bill Parcells is trying to turn Ware into a complete linebacker, not just a one-trick pony like a Dwight Freeney, who does nothing but rush the passer it seems when you watch him play. My guess is Ware will remain in the role he's in, and basically get turned loose on nickel downs when he's rushing as a down defensive end on the right side. He's still seems just a tick away from having a monster season when it comes to sacks. I think he needs to use his speed more than getting into so many bull-rush situations

Merriman is a one trick pony. ALl he can do is rush the passer. He is a liability both against the run and in coverage- so the Chargers make sure he does very little of that. Ware does it all. There are three things that a LB needs to do: rush the passer, defend against the run, and cover. Merriman is better at rushing the passer; Ware is better with everything else. So give me Ware anytime.

dude Houstons oline could not MAX protect if their lives depended on it. you know, i know it, we all know it. Carr gets sacked like 70 times a year. we couldnt get him once. theres no way Houston just sent Moulds and Johnson alone on routes; that wont win any games. 9 guys were not protecting on every down.

Merriman > Ware when it comes to pass rushing. get over it.

ok now i think this is going to be a good point... how come we never hide Demarcus ware.. he always lines up at the same place ALWAYS over the left tackle.. how come he never blitzes up the middle.. how come we never line him up with greg ellis and blitz them both.. or trick the line and blitz 1... make the offensive line always worry where WARE IS!!!!!

As I pointed out, Merriman is a liability against the run and in coverage. So ware is all around the better LB.

You have yet to bring a fact into this. The minimum protection they had was 6, sometimes they had 7. That's the way it is. You are right - they WON'T win games that way, and they aren't. You will notice that we DID win.

We had 4 guys rushing with Ware on an OT. Carr got the ball out within 3-4 seconds nearly every play. They stopped the pass rush, but paid by throwing picks. But you see historically Carr has gotten sacked a lot and so good teams always will sack him. Rubbish - they did everything imaginable to protect Carr in this game.

Oh BTW - W00dson - Merriman had 0 sacks against Tennessee when Collins was playing. It isn't like their OL was spectacular. Guess he must suck.

did you watch the game? do you know what the final score was? that's exactly what they did, and you are right, it won't win games.

he's at 5.5 sacks now compared to 2 sacks for ware...and will probably hit 12 or 13...ware probably will be right around 8 again...i dont think there will be any argument that we should have drafted merriman..he is a beast...teams are worried about him and they account for him like they do for roy williams...just think if we had two players like that on our team! bad move jerrah...should have drafted the better passrusher...he is a game changer while ware is just a good player...merriman will be great if he is not already...and i dont want to hear about this zimmer bend but dont break defense...i see ware rushing ALOT AND HE JUST CANT GET THERE...BOTTOM LINE

didnt he miss a tackle and in effect cost them a game a few weeks back?

Which also explains why they didn't stretch the field at all. Johnson had 9 catches for 75 yards and moulds had 4 for 44 which shows you how often Houston tried to go downfield. It's almost impossible to sack the qb when he's on a 3-5 step drop, unless you are untouched you can't get there in time.

Turns out Jeff Fisher was right in how to deal with merriman. Shoulda kept that sig, I guess....

I am amazed that everyone is so impressed with merriman's 3 sacks against Raider RBs and 2.5 sacks otherwise. I could outrebound professional basketball players, too - if they were midgets.

HA

then how was Carr sacked 15 times in their first 4 games. what they decided "hey lets just block Dallas" gimmie a break. take off the ware glasses, he aint perfect and no where near the pass rusher as Merriman

What was the score of the game again?
And are you really complaining about our defensive performance against the Texans?

Yep. I'm done in this thread. It's now apparent to me that most of us seem to get it.

i know we won obviously.

look I love Ware, I love the Cowboys lol. but we all know Merriman can rush the passer like a train, Ware can too but not as well as Merriman.

Your sig was the absolute best quote to throw out in these threads. I completely remember it.

In Ellis' postgame interview, he said people would criticize the pass rush for not getting any sacks, but that they still got good pressure DESPITE Houston keeping seven players in to block.

Make of it what you will, but when you're rushing four and they are blocking with seven, who should have the advantage?

It was hilarious. The host asks him, how are you planning on dealing with Merriman? Fisher laughed, and said "Well, we're certainly not going to drop back 10 yards and block him with a back every down." They all chuckled, and then went on to talk about how a player like Merriman SHOULD be handled. And four other teams have a similar amount of knowledge, apparently.

I realize what you are saying, and the stats would seem to support your opinion at a glance. But, take away 1 game against the worst team in the NFL, and Merriman has .5 more sacks on the season despite rushing the qb on what I would guess is a 2-1 or 3-2 ratio as compared with D. Ware.

Merriman is a beast, no doubt about it, but Demarcus is a much more well rounded, complete player, and I'd rather have him on my team that Merriman. JMHO
