I liked Dixon (assuming he didn't have an attitude, but apparently he did) but I don't get the idea he was a potential starter. There is a reason he lasted until the 7th round in the draft and a reason he wasn't immediately signed by another team to their active roster.

Dixon was drafted to be a Special Teams Kamikazi and fill the role Danny McCray had here for four years. The NFLPA automatic pay increases priced McCray out of a job this year (he actually took a pay cut last year to stay on the team) and Dixon was drafted to fill that spot. When a better player than either one (CJ Spillman) became available, they signed him and plugged him into that role and salary spot.

I know half the people here live and breath for bashing the Dallas Front Office, but its actually a very simple thing.

I get this feeling that - if a player isnt a starter - positional talent is secondary to ST talent. Sure you need guys who will play and give effort there, but 90% of the game is not ST. Heath is horrendous and he showed that in preseason.

And that's where you're wrong wrong. Special teams figures a whole lot more than 10%, especially when you take into account the state of this defense. You guys are ignoring the field position aspect of the game, and that is 100% about ST. When you don't have good return teams, you put your offense in a hole. When you don't have good punt and kickoff coverage teams, yo pur your defense in a hole. This defense has enough holes to begin with. Heath will be the 4th or 5th safety this season, his degree of effectiveness on defense is of minor concern.

Again you miss the point in your desperate attempt to defend the worst run team in the NFL.

Nobody expected Heath to go before Dixon. He just should have gone before him. Ya know, if our top two personnel men were, like, legitimate and stuff.

Right. A "legitimate" personnel man makes no consideration of special teams when making final roster decisions. He just stacks his defense to stop opposing offenses after their 30-yard punt returns and 55-yard kickoff returns. And after that "stacked" defense makes the stop, and his offense gets pinned inside the 20 because there are no return team considerations taken either, they give the ball right back to the opposition in a short field.

Bottom line - who's the better 4th or 5th safety isn't as important as who's the better special teams player. That's why guys like Heath and Cam Lawrence are on the team, and deservedly so.

Or maybe I misinterpreted your post...is "legitimate personnel man" code for "message board poster"?

Sorry your pet cat was a knucklehead and got cut. The fact that you disagree with the team is not really an argument for the team being wrong.

And then still made the 53. It makes no sense.

Obviously he was close to being off the roster when it finally made up.

Personally I think we've all wasted too much time discussing the guys that make up the final 3 or 4 spots of the roster.

Lot of speculations about the whole "knucklehead" excuse. Garrett/Jones/et al were so incensed that he put him on the 53 man roster for 2 days and then figured out he wasnt an RKG because of the Miami game (i.e. before the last Denver game).

I think it shows a problem between the coaching staff and scouting department.

Well when you have problems achieving success like the Cowboys have there undoubtedly have to be issues.

But do you get me on this one? Like if there was no issue, Dixon would've just been released first off like Ryan Williams.

It's just puzzling after all the praise he got from the head coach after the SD game. My only respite is maybe we didn't expect Spillman to come available when we faxed our roster into the league office.

I think you hit the nail on the head with Spillman.

Right, cause drafting special teams fodder that has no shot to turn into a starter has worked out so well for this team. You never see other late round picks starting or contributing on other teams in the NFL, either.

Make your list, genius. Let's see all these 7th rounders that are starting for other teams. Let's see this mile long list of genius teams. I won't hold my breath.

No. I agree with you on the previous post.
I think there is a serious problem with the scouting department and it's synergy with the coaching staff.
Been this way for a long, long time.
I know there are many that say it's gotten better since Garrett took the reins as HC and maybe it has, but...

There are still problems with the way this team handles the draft almost every year and it starts with the scouts and the information they give the FO.

I, for one, would not be in the least bit distressed if I read that Jerry has cleaned house as far as the scouts are concerned and Ciskowski.
Wouldn't make me frown even a millimeter.
