Ahmad Dixon Cut

he really pissed off Garrett with his silly comments.

Of course.

It would have pissed off any coach.

It's one thing for a 4-time pro-bowler to say "Hey I do what I do and I'm not going to change", and it's another for a 7th round scrub who's just trying to make the team saying it.

Yet our lovable group of armchair secondary coaches on here, love that Dixon can hit hard, and that he brings an attitude. I guess if Dixon started or played in the nickel D, he could really scare opposing wrs and tes who regularly blow by him to the end zone and threaten them with bodily harm if he could ever catch up to them.

I wasn't aware of those comments. I get why Dixon is gone but I'm still not a Heath fan. There has to be somebody out there that can play safety and ST's better than him.

If that is the case, why did Garrett keep him in the initial cut down to 53? could have kept Ryan smith or whoever if that spot was likely to be cut for another?

Drew Brees speaks highly of Heath, thinks he should start for dallas - at least until 9/29/2014

So your honestly telling me that Heath, in all his posterizing glory, has shown more promise than Dixon. Granted, we haven't seen an awful lot of Dixon but he showed more positive play than I have ever seen from Heath. At least with Dixon, there is something to work with. Somebody please answer, what does Heath do well?

Yes, because getting legitimate starters out of our 7th round and UDFA players is where this team is really lacking.

Stupid Cowboys fans.

Right, cause drafting special teams fodder that has no shot to turn into a starter has worked out so well for this team. You never see other late round picks starting or contributing on other teams in the NFL, either.

I think Garrett was willing to let it slide.

But the signing of the kid from SF negated any sort of necessity for having Dixon on the 53 man roster.

And if you're not cutting Dixon who are you going to cut?

And don't say the FB, because obviously the team wanted a FB on the roster (and emphasized it by signing another FB for the practice squad).

Man, once a player earns the wrath of some here it's hard to turn it around.

Heath is fast, can tackle, appears durable, is coachable, apparently from reports learns quickly, and is a good teammate. He's definitely behind the curve in learning how to cover, take proper angles and learn offenses as well as the defensive assignments. No wonder; he's from a Div II school. He was thrown into the fire and still managed to keep Wilcox off the field when he returned. He's not ready to play a starter's role yet and maybe wouldn't be a backup if not for his STs play although that does say something about him. His broad jump is 10.5, vertical 37 and reps 22. If you round that 10.5 up you get an elite athlete score of 70. That doesn't make him a football player much less a starting safety but that's some great material to start with.

People need to get used to seeing LBers, CBs and safeties give up a lot of passes esp if we don't get enough pressure.

Hahah your man crush for this guy has been well documented. You declared he had made the team after two preseason games. He's a decent player but lacks the range you need to cover guys at this level. Hope he makes PS. But nothing to piss and moan over him being cut.

And he did make the team lol :)

I get this feeling that - if a player isnt a starter - positional talent is secondary to ST talent. Sure you need guys who will play and give effort there, but 90% of the game is not ST. Heath is horrendous and he showed that in preseason.

I reserve the right to be wrong over time but right now Heath is a better safety with more experience and actually more upside. Huge hits are a fan favorite and everyone enjoys dishing them out. Unfortunately those days are over IMO. You can put a perfect hit on a player and still get penalized. It's just too easy for them to toss the hanky. STs are important but you don't just keep a player unless that's all that breaks the tie. I'd like to see both Dixon and Mitchell make the PS but both have to refine their game esp when it comes to creating penalties.

I'm interested in seeing Heath develop. Maybe we have a player who can at least backup and play STs; perhaps push someone for a starters job. That is unless someone better comes along.

It's about what they did do. Which was obvious because of what they had done throughout preseason. You're obviously free to disagree, but if you thought they were keeping Dixon over Heath it was because of your own sentimental attachment to the player.

Heath would have fit in perfectly in the 2009 special teams draft.

Whoops, didn't mean all-22. I meant, if you watch him specifically play-by-play. Which I did. And it wasn't good. I did it after the game where he was supposedly so good, and I came away with a much different impression. I came away thinking, not only can this guy not cover, but I don't think he has the ability to ever be good at it.

All he did was make tackles after someone caught the ball or ran through the line. He's a LBer speed wise and mentality wise, with few instincts and no size to play LBer.

We need guys that can cover sideline to sideline. 12 tackles sounds great, but that's not good when your safeties our the leading tacklers. IMO Heath has better range at safety and is a good special teamer. I don't get the Heath hate, he came in here and competed and won a spot two years straight now. Everyone in the secondary got burned routinely last year, not just him. He's got starting experience now. Dallas doesn't need in the box safeties. All that said, I hope Dixon is on the practice squad. I like how he plays, but I understand the decision.
Let to put it to you as nice as i can. Jeff Heath sucks. and he has no business on an NFL roster. is that clear enough for you ?

Terrible move. Dixon was a knucklehead but had starter potential. Much better player than Barry Church was as a rookie.

Not knowing what angle to take on a post route from the deep middle is pretty inexcusable. This is the NFL and he is trying to be a safety.

What Dixon needs to do is get on a field and have routes run at him and practice angles in space. He has no feel for the game out there and it's painful to watch until the QB gets rid of the ball.

Glad our staff favors unathletic safeties with piss poor tackling skills and a total lack of field awareness over someone with potential to assist us in creating our very own Legion of Boom.

Heath is very athletic, and is the best tackler on special teams. That's why he's on the team and Dixon isn't.
