Alarming stat downplays Dak Prescott's passing ability

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott last fall enjoyed a career-best season, one that would've been even better had his receivers held onto the football. According to Pro Football Focus, Prescott led the NFL in air yards lost on dropped passes with 392 thanks to a group of receivers that were wildly-inconsistent when targeted.

Prescott finished with a career-high 4,902 passing yards (1 yard shy of tying Tony Romo's franchise single season passing yards record...and 2 yards shy of breaking it), nearly breaking the all-time single-season franchise record and has used that production as a primary strength during the negotiation process this offseason. Cowboys wideout Michael Gallup ranked second in the league with 11 drops on 113 targets while Randall Cobb in the slot tied for sixth with eight drops on 83 targets.

These numbers prove Prescott would in fact be considered among the league's elite under center if his supporting cast did a better job of holding up their end of the bargain.

If one adds those 392 air yards lost (due to Cowboys WRs leading the league in drops in 2019) to Dak's career-high 4,902 passing yards, that would have increased his total to 5,294 yards: roughly 5,300 passing in 2019...by far the highest single season Cowboys franchise passing record and without a doubt an elite passer throughout the league. It also would have landed Dak with the 3rd highest single season passing yards ever in NFL history:

Current NFL Top 10 highest single season passing records:

1 Peyton Manning (37) 5,477 2013 DEN
2 Drew Brees (32) 5,476 2011 NOR
3 Tom Brady (34) 5,235 2011 NWE
4 Drew Brees (37) 5,208 2016 NOR
5 Drew Brees (33) 5,177 2012 NOR
6 Drew Brees (34) 5,162 2013 NOR
7 Ben Roethlisberger (36) 5,129 2018 PIT
8 Jameis Winston (25) 5,109 2019 TAM
9 Patrick Mahomes (22) 5,097 2018 KAN
10 Dan Marino+ (22) 5,084 1984 MIA

No wonder Dak at age 26 (entering his prime) is holding out for top overall QB pay. He's only going to get better under new Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his pro-passer QB system.

How Bout Them Cowboys! :starspin:

When you said Dak and elite in the same sentence iswhen your post when off the rails.

We would have made the playoffs if our receivers could catch the ball . Eagles game was a sad display . We got beat by a practice squad guy with nothing to lose and a sharp focus on catching the ball .

Our Stars flat out dropped balls right in their hands that would have won that game .

The excessive drops are definitely something whereby the new Dallas WRs coach must get our WRs to concentrate better! o_O

Maybe a swift kick in the rump would help to convince 'em to concentrate on securing the ball before prematurely relaxing?! :D

I've heard in the past that a coach would make an RB carry the ball with him everywhere. Would it be likely to work with a WR?

Take out Cobb and put in Lamb and there is 1/3 of the problem solved. Gallup I don't believe will have THAT many again. Cooper has had lots of drops his entire career.

I'm a big Dak advocate but not to the point where it is everybody else's fault he's not a three time champion and 1st Team All Pro.

Dak does have some things he needs to work on and I would say his receivers share credit in his impressive completion percentage. Some of those catches, and especially Gallup, were pretty darn acrobatic.

The stat system that determines catch percentage is pretty iffy, in my opinion. Their are different difficulty levels and a lot of that is determined by the skill of the quarterback......or lack thereof. Go back and look at some of Irvin's catches. My gosh, Michael would be double covered and Troy Aikman would split the 8's on his jersey.

You don't see that very often from Dak. That's not his strong suit. His ability to be a double threat and his playmaking ability under even the most intense pressure is his strong points, as well as his leadership and competitive drive.

As long as we are talking about alarming stats, we really need to look at game winning drives and come from behind victories. From 2016 to 2018 Dak had 4 or 5 Game winning drives each season. He had a combined 8 fourth quarter come from behind victories. He was second only to Tom Brady in these categories.

And in 2019? Nothing. he didn't get a single one in both categories. If Dak had one then the Cowboys would have been in the playoffs. Two, and the Cowboys would have won their division. Three and the Cowboys would have had a bye for the playoffs. That would still be under his season average. Let's hope that is just a fluke.

Dak's contract, however, has nothing to do with stats or even victories over the past four seasons. If the Cowboys want to be the best they can be, then they need Dak. That is the single most important consideration and it always has been.

So we would have beaten the Rams and Dolphins by even MORE??

Lol sorry, had to take it. I'm just sick of stats already.

They need not retain him because of numbers, they need to retain him because his contract is up and theres no better option right now, and he is plenty fine to win with on a roster built to win now, not tank for draft position.

If the team didnt want to pay him they needed to be looking for his replacement years ago.

Jerry wasted Prescotts rookie deal on his hand picked genius puppet. Now write the check.

So why is Winston so unwanted and Dak is getting offered highest QB money?

Lets see if you can even answer this one correctly? Since you are such a QB guru.

Tick tock, tick tock...………..………………...
Those ints. If he had half of those picks last year the bucs would have paid him.

I see what they are saying. But if you adjust everyones stats based on total yards lost due to drops is more telling. Using what his stats could have been to everyones actual stats are literally apples to oranges.

KC receivers combined for 28 drops last year.

Dallas receivers accounted for 36 drops last year

i've never, ever seen a fanbase so vehemently opposed to their own objectively very good QB. it's so bizarre.
you would think Dak had NOTHING to do with Gallup having a great season. like, Gallup was a 2nd year guy. not like he's some known elite commodity. Dak is part of the reason he had a great season.

I keep hearing this argument but then I see over and over WR's on other teams making acrobatic catches.
I have seen the same. It’s just a tricky thing on where the blame lies. I agree that if it hits them in the hands then they should catch it. But some of these drops that the WR is running across and Dak throws it behind them and at full speed he is trying to reach back with one hand grab the ball and keep moving and not get hit, that’s not a catch that’s gonna be made a lot and I think the blame should be shared. Now I saw some that was just straight drops.
