Pivotal year for the jovencito. We've put a lot of time in his development. Time to actually do something.

Cowboys used him as TE3. He blocked a ton this year and looked good at it. He has really great drive that moves LB and to a lesser extent DE.

Rico always looked more pushy shovey to me, and tentatively at that, but I'm glad to hear someone else seeing better blocking out of him.

One thing that I notice is that the posters here hates the guy. Why? He did not ask for all of the hype.

Rico did plenty of hyping himself.

Rico: "Ima be the next best tight end in this league" and I believe that with all my heart.

https://247sports.com/nfl/dallas-co...e-running-game-isnt-my-strong-suit-118798632/

"The running game, that’s not really my strong suit, I’m not even going to lie," said Gathers. "I’m not going to sugar coat it. I’m pretty sure that Jimmy Graham, the running game wasn’t his strong suit too, but he’s a five-time Pro Bowler. ...[who had] 492 yards and he made the Pro Bowl. I think for the most part it’s one of those things you just have to work at each and every day.

"I feel like for a guy like me, I don’t feel like that should hold me back from contributing."

I still didn't hate him, but he needed to stop feeling like he was an entitled "guy like me" and learn some football. Blocking in particular. That was always his route to getting on the field.

Having said that, I put some of this on the coaching staff. Parcells would lay out a plan for a player. The plan for Rico should have always been "learn how to block, and we can get you game day active and on the field." Sounds like our coaches left Rico to dream his own big dreams while he frittered away his first couple of years.

Rico's butt busting to block only started in earnest this year, when he faced a serious threat of not making the roster. If our coaches had actually coached him from the time we got him, he'd probably be a good and maybe great blocker by now. He's huge, strong, and athletic. We've turned LBs into fullbacks in an offseason. Blocking was always the low hanging fruit for his career.

Why are we even dealing with nothing but a basketball player? Release him finally he is useless.

Can’t wait for the “JG ruined Rico’s career” and “if he were in NE he would have over 1,000 yards” comments.

Not concerned with Gathers. if he makes to camp good for him anything he shows is icing on the cake. If Cowboys move on from him I'm fine with that as well. For some reason this will be a long thread for a lower rung player.

Man, reading all the post, it's damn certain this is a either or topic. And to be honest, I don't think any of us knows enough to truly give an honest and clear remark on him... just to many unknowns as to what was done or not done regarding the guys development... I don't know, on 1 hand I say cut him for all the obvious reasons, then on the other I'm kind of of a mind to give him this season to show what he is... damned if I know, I'd just hate to cut him and he then goes to another team we play and he blows up on us and really IS that TE we all hoped he would be.

The question is not Rico as that experiment will be over but who will the new pet cat be? Got to have that player that just intrigues the hell out of us and we think 'if they'd just play him, we'd get that ring'. And of course, it helps if he hasn't played football for a while but some other sport unrelated to football.

I am hoping for Ollie Gustafson, curler from Wisconsin State Penitentiary. We need a deep snapper and word is he's pretty darn good at it.
