Sure it isnt. Thats why they had to restructure Frederick already. Because they had soo much cap space.

Frederick was restructured to open space for the free agents, not sign our own. First year extensions are at minimum salaries with a signing bonus as the yearly pay, which is prorated over the length of the contract, up to 5 years. Both Martin and Lawrence would see their cap hits decrease this year. Please refrain from discussing topics you don’t understand.

When you calculate the top 51 salaries, none of the rookie salaries will actually count against the CAP during the summer because ALL of the base salaries will be the rookie minimum. On a 90 man roster, all of the rookie salaries won't count. So, the only CAP room you need to sign the rookies is the CAP room needed to cover the prorated 2018 portion of the rookie signing bonuses.

Based on the rookie salary scale, the Cowboys will need a little under $3,012,000 to cover the cost of the rookie signing bonuses - including all the signing bonuses for undrafted rookies, which is about $92,000 of the $3,012,000 they need. By cutting Orlando Scandrick, and making him a designated June 1st cut, his entire scheduled $3,000,000 2018 salary will come off the books on June 1st. That means the Cowboys only need a little under $12,000 in CAP space to sign all the rookies. The $480K apiece (total $4,800,000 for 10 draft picks) won't count against the CAP during the summer. Neither will the $480K salaries for the 15-20 undrafted players the Cowboys sign in the Spring. Only the top 51 salaries count. But ALL the bonus money allocated to 2018 counts - including bonus money for past players, and players who get cut during the pre-season.

Now, when it comes time to cut down to 53 players, the entire salaries of all the rookies WILL count. But by that time, the Cowboys will have cut the higher salaried players, and their numbers will be removed from the CAP, and many of those rookies will also be cut. At that point, the Cowboys also need about $1.2M to cover the Practice Squad salaries for 10 players, which are about $120K each. That is in addition to the salaries of the 53 players who make the team, plus any players put on injured reserve. The Cowboys like to keep about $2-3M in CAP space to make more moves during the season as players get injured.

So, that is why the Cowboys only need about $3M to cover the rookie contracts during the summer.
Yeppers. I understand the rule 51. I was misreading spotrac. We covered this a few posts back.

2-years and $12 million is an awful lot to pay to upgrade over Brice Butler. Thompson's $2.5 million is even quite a bit more than what they paid for Butler.
Thompson is really getting $1.8 million, the rest is incentives. Some of Hurns' contract is also incentives.

Trading Beasley makes no sense. Unless we can get NE’s middle LB for him. I don’t know if I would want to do that though. Beasley would be a beast on NE.

Beasley went from being our most effective receiver in 2016 to being fairly ineffective in 2017. There are reasons for that that are both the fault of the coaching staff and Beasley's limitations as a receiver. Beasley's strength is his quickness on breaking in and out of routes. Defensive backs can't keep up with him on short-range, quick hitters. However, we haven't really seen him show the ability consistently to stretch the field so that defenses can't sit on those routes, which is what they did last year with bracket coverage. This may not be all Beasley's fault because the staff over and over again had him do the same things (in and out quick routes) despite the coverage.

There are ways to get Beasley open, but not running the offense that we run. Because we now have too many receivers, if he has trade value, I think he is the most logical choice to be traded. Hurns has slot ability and while we would lose Beasley's quick plays, he would give us a wider array of options on routes. Switzer is a similar player to Beasley, so if we wanted some of those quick ins and outs, he can run them. Thompson brings a different dimension with his speed.

In thinking more about who should be the odd man out, I think it should be Beasley for these reasons and also because of Hurns' injury problems the past two years. Although I could live with Williams being traded, he'd also be good insurance in case those injury problems continue.

My receiver plans would be Dez and Hurns as the starters with Hurns going to the slot and either Williams or Thompson coming in on third downs. If Switzer progresses, then he can take some of the slot snaps with Hurns staying outside.

Name me someone who is more over paid, drops more passes, gets less seperation, and worries more about his catches than wins, than Dez.

At least act like you have any idea what’s going on before thinking you know what dez is like. You’re probably the same guy who thinks his sideline “antics” are negative when it’s actually revealed he’s trying to pump up his teammates.

Here’s actual quotes from the horses mouth circa December this past season.

"It's an understanding of what is going on and what is happening," Bryant said of why he refuses to get frustrated. "They are doubling. That is what most fans don't understand. We are just trying to move on. That is what it is right now. I can't be thinking of me right now. We just got to keep on winning."

Bryant said his focus is to make the most every ball that comes his way. And that's the attitude of the entire receiver corps.

If you get one ball, make something happen with it, Bryant said.

"That is the attitude we are playing with," Bryant said. "That attitude is playing a big factor in the way we are playing football. That is more important than athletic ability. We just want to win. That is the attitude."

That's exactly how I see it. Beasley is the odd guy out. I still think he has value and brings a lot to this team. But Switzer can do what he does in that role. If not you have Hurns for the slot, and Williams goes back to the outside.

What he says to the media is not the walk that he is walking on game day. That's good stuff if he would just do it.

I like this signing. He is our 2nd best receiver on our roster. I think having another big possession WR is a good thing for dak

Beasley may be the odd man out but if so I don't think it will be based on production. Breasley seemed like he was starting to get frustrated/have some attitude at times last year. I don't really know how that factors into all of this but it may be a factor.

To be fair, no one knows what the team is planning or thinking. But Hurns salary suggests that he wasn't brought on board to replace the 4th or 5th receiver. His talent level also suggests the same thing.

The contract seems to indicate that someone in the top 3 is getting bumped out. Williams has a fully guaranteed contract for this year so unless we have a trade partner it's probably not going to be him, at least this season.

That leaves Dez and Beasley. Beasley has been a clutch player for the past three seasons. While it could be Beasley there are about 4 million reasons to move on from him. There are $12.5 million reasons to move on from Dez not counting the performance issues. The money trail at least suggests Dez might be the odd man out.

Well, I don't know if Switzer can do what he does. That remains to be seen. The hope is that he can. But Hurns' ability to play the slot differently than what Beasley does gives me reason to believe that trading Beasley would be a safe option.

Sounds like Dez gets to decide whether he wants a pay cut still.

Also, just because the opposite gets said so much around here, one reason he came here was because he liked the coaches. Interesting.

Listening to that clip is a pretty strong indication that the team is strongly considering moving on from Dez. To say that the team isn't considering it is to be in complete denial. Who knows what ultimately happens but it is definitely in play.

Yeah, I was surprised by that comment, given how under wraps everything has been. Obviously, it’s a question that would have come up in his visit.

Sammy Watkins. Done.
Yeah, Watkins is even more over paid than Dez, but he does get more seperation and he is not seen on the sideline whining about not catching the ball when his team is winning. In regards to Dez, many fans on this site have very short memories. This team has won games without Dez. Now that we have added, what looks like two solid receivers, a big speed receiver and a receiver with a skill set similar to Dez’s, without all of Dez’s baggage, including his league leading drops and issues with getting seperation, we should try to trade Dez or release him if that is not possible. The money we save releasing or trading Dez, can be used to sign a solid FA. This team and receiving corps can get better by saying good bye to Dez. He was really good for 5 years, but right now, he’s lost a step and paid to much!
