We need at least 4 active dudes on the defensive line. I'd rather they come from the college ranks.

It's close. I probably would rather have Melton if his knee is fine, despite Hatcher's 11 sacks last year. Mainly because of age. I'd rather have Ware over Allen.

But it's really close. To me these two signings would just get the team back to where they were when FA started. When we all wanted upgrades.

Here what your saying for me its just some optimism and nothing more. I'm not running to vegas and putting a bet down and not standing on my desk proclaiming a championship. 95 was a long time ago and as I said that is quit a long haul of mediocrity and it doesnt take much to get excited about something this team does that "appears" to be positive. Gosh that is sad.

I would see it as merely replacing what you just lost in Ware and Hatcher. You still have a really bad defense.

I'd agree with you if they didn't address the D-line in the draft. But you add Allen and Melton....Donald and another pass rusher, Crawford and Bass are coming back.......we hate to use the injury excuse but this defensive line was depleted. And injuries are a part of the game so they may very well be hurt next year. But IF they can somehow manage to stay healthy...that's far more than replacing what you lost. Especially in the month of December. Hatcher and Ware might as well have not played.

For my money IF IF IF we sing these 2 guys we would have added the best 3technique and the best pass rushing DE available in this market. How could that be bad? Hatcher had a career year and Ware may be finished. Our biggest weak point was the D-line WITH those guys so how is adding 2 good players to it not improving?

But they wouldn't have improved the team in FA. This would be akin to keeping Ware and resigning Hatcher. That's great but you didn't improve anything. The draft is happening one way or the other. What you did in FA was essentially a wash.

Unless you're a big fan of Jeremy Mincey and Terrell McClain.

I doubt we land both, but it would be a heckuva pull if we did. Land a premium DLineman in the draft and suddenly we have a solid rotational DLine core.

Both of these players want to get paid.
Allen lost me a couple of days ago..... he wants market value .... which is between Ware money and Peters money or he plans to retire.
Too much money for my liking. Rod's defense isn't big on sacks ... Never has been ...It's on pressure. I don't think any of his Tampa 2 two defenses have ever recorded big time sacks by a single player. It's about inside pressure, containing the edges, and turnovers

Yeah, we were one win away from taking our division, and we lost several games by 3 are fewer points. Now that we have a better OLine and a legit DC, a better DLine plus better injury luck could propel this team far.

Propel the team far? No way. Don't forget, the NFC east was horrific last year and we went 5-1 in our division. You can't count on that every year. We beat all the teams below .500 last year and didn't beat any team above .500. I agree with your opinion on us having a legit defensive coordinator, but not sure our Dline will be any better at this point. Melton and Allen are not really an upgrade from Ware and Spencer, they are just interchangeable parts really. Marinelli can't squeeze blood out of turnips. He isn't a miracle worker.

Absolutely agree. This is no way to rebuild a DLine at all. I don't think either signs, but if they do it isn't progress IMO. Swapping Ware and Hatcher for Melton and Allen is not progress at all. Salaries be damned.

I'd rather overpay for Melton than Allen, and definitely not both

5 of our wins came from the weakest division in the NFL
think on that

I'd rather not pay for Melton but his age is attractive. However I like a guy like Allen's psycho-ness, 32 or not. Enjoy seeing that in a D player.

It would help in the future though. Mainly because you don't want to go into the draft knowing you absolutely must have at least 3 D-Linemen drafted. You lose too much leverage and flexibility as to what you can possibly do. And by reducing the cap hit overall, we can now spend money in other key places in 2015 and beyond.

Or does the team just bite the bullet, not commit to players like Melton and Allen and continue to clean up the cap for a run next year?

I'm starting to think the best course of action is to nothing in free agency this year.

I agree 100% and something that Ware lacked on the field was that crazy psycho personality.

Would love to have both of them on the team. I wouldn't be shocked if we got neither, though.

Understand completely but nevertheless it will allow the team to compete on both sides of the ball. I'd much rather watch a team that has a chance to win than a team you know is just 22 bodies. Either way I will be watching. No one is talking SB...I'm not dumb.....just a diehard that would like the fact a 27 yr old DT could be brought in and one of the best DE in the league as a stop gap. Long shot for both yes. Would be nice though.

I am with you 100%. Seems like too many people want us to mail it in and go 3-13. so we can get a high draft pick. First of all, even with a terrible D I don't see that happening. If Romo is healthy all year, I don't see us doing worse than 7 wins. Not that that is good. But as a fan, I want us to stay competitive even if it mean a 7-9 season vs a 2 or 3 win season. But with than being said, I hope we don't significantly overpay for either of these guys.

It would be exciting to see something new, but I don't think it makes us better.

Signing Melton would probably be a good thing. Although I think we're a few years away from being a contender and by the time we are, Melton will be 30.

But Melton is the kind of signing we're looking for. Not sure if he himself is the right guy, but it's the kind of signing we should be doing.
