Both of these players want to get paid.
Allen lost me a couple of days ago..... he wants market value .... which is between Ware money and Peters money or he plans to retire.
Too much money for my liking. Rod's defense isn't big on sacks ... Never has been ...It's on pressure. I don't think any of his Tampa 2 two defenses have ever recorded big time sacks by a single player. It's about inside pressure, containing the edges, and turnovers

The thing is, we did not really see what his line was capable of last year, with both Ware and Hatcher going away in the second half of the year. Ware was playing with one arm for the majority of last year and Hatcher completely disappeared after his injury. If they both had stayed healthy, Dallas had a real shot of at least winning the division. They both just did not hold up to the end.

Getting 11 sacks from the 3T position is pretty damn solid in my opinion. Hatcher had more sacks than Lotulelei and Short combined [Carolina with 4.5 total] and that was before he got injured. He also did this with a hobbled Ware on the edge. I don't think they can get both Allen and Melton. I don't think they really need to but Melton is still pretty young [27], so he gives you much flexibility in the draft. Allen seems more about the money but he has always been a spirited player.

If it were not for the Giants and Bears picking ahead of Dallas, then I would spurn them both, get Donald and maybe Crichton then roll from there. It still might be possible to bring in a vet like Ayers at a lower price toward the beginning of the season. I am not in favor of reaching for Allen and Melton...only Melton.

I like J. Allen he is 31 can play the run and get to the QB, give him Justin Tuck 2 yr 6 Million contract and call it a day.

You've got it backwords -- Dallas is the place where players come to get ABOVE-market contracts.... not below-market contracts.

Why find more ways to get to 8-8? It is not like these players could win you a SB.

It also takes a TEAM to win the SB, and these 2 players would be a part of that team. Does anyone really expect what ever player or few players signed will be that big of a difference. I don't, but that combined with a few more, and a solid draft helps get you there.

He won't sign for that. He wants more and he wil get it from someone or walk away.

It would certainly put them in better position for the draft. It would stink if a player fell in their laps only to have Dallas pass or trade out because of needs.

If Ware and Hatcher were to been retained, at a higher cost more likely than Allen and Metlon. Would you feel good about the DL going into the draft and the season?
So why not these two players can be viewed as a replacement. but still draft a DT & a DE.
It all depends on what, if, they sign for. Melton at 27, coming off an ACL, which most players recover from. Give him the money over Spencer, coming off a micro-fracture surgery. Far more players do not recover from that. Especially an older player.
Offer Allen an incentive laden contract, use as a stop gap. If he don't like it, move on to possibly Ayers.
No matter, it won't be any worse than last year, as they will have some depth to work with to keep a fresh rotation.

I'd rather we not go into the draft needing 4 defensive linemen.

True, but it will be a position of need regardless. If I had to choose between Melton or Allen, I would take Allen, and draft inside guys. We still need an infusion of young blood on the D-Line from the draft.

Or does the team just bite the bullet, not commit to players like Melton and Allen and continue to clean up the cap for a run next year?

I'm starting to think the best course of action is to nothing in free agency this year.

Tough to say. Melton I'm fine with. He's still fairly young. Allen is up there in age. Love him as a player. It really depends on the contracts given.

Historically, teams that start to beef up in one area thru the draft have done poorly until they can get a coach to figure out the mess. The Chiefs beefed up their D-Line for years thru the draft and stunk until Reid was able to give them some consistency on offense. The Browns beefed up the O-Line for years and still stink. The Niners beefed up their O-Line and stunk until Harbaugh came in and gave them some identity on offense.

So if you don't sign Melton or Allen, you start to get into that mode where the draft becomes very D-Line oriented simply because you have guys that have no business starting for an NFL team. And you can start to develop some real talent in that area, but you may end up like the Browns and never find that coach that can turn it around and because the other positions stink, being a top-tier team at one area doesn't mean much. I think it also gives players too much leverage come contract negotiations.

I'd like to sign both to favorable contracts where we can get out of them early if they don't look to pan out. Continue to draft some D-Linemen for the future, but address other key areas in the draft (QB, CB, Safety, LB, OG).

I disagree, look at what Peyton manning did to the Broncos. you can say he chokes, but he has won a sb and took 2 different teams to it.

It's also possible we're bringing in Allen to leverage Melton a little bit this afternoon.

So your saying its all him? One year he had a complete team and won it all. This past year he did not have a complete team and lost. One star helps but no way can he do it alone just ask Troy, Emmitt, or the Playmaker.

I can't imagine us getting Allen for any less than 8-9 mill/yr. Personally I would prefer to pass on him at that amount. Get Melton and move forward. I hope we can get Melton on a decent contract. I wonder if he would go for 6 mill/yr?

$8-9 million is entirely reasonable for a player of Allen's caliber. Isn't that less than we spent on Spencer last year?

you saw what teebow did, was replaced by manning and actually had an offense. as for the triplets, you are comparing salary cap era to no salary cap or early stages of it, and an nfl where running the ball was a staple where passing is that now.
